Chapter 14

Becky's P.O.V



The soft sound of the sheets moving was the very first thing that disturbed the peaceful sleepy feeling that surrounded me completely. Then a gentle knock came breaking the silence in my small room.


It was persistent but not overly loud—a clear sign that I couldn’t hide away from everything in the world forever. I opened my eyes slowly still feeling sleepy and I found myself wanting to stay wrapped up in the warmth of my blankets. But then the knock came again this time a bit stronger and more assertive.


“Becky!” A voice that I recognized called out from the other side of the door. It was Simon one of the guards who is part of our pack. He added “Alpha Rian would like to speak with you.”


When I heard the name Alpha Rian my heart felt a little faster than usual as if it was excited. I pushed the blankets away from me and swung my legs over the edge of the bed. As I did this I could feel the cool air gently touch my skin which made me shiver a little.


I quickly ran my fingers through my hair to make it look nice and neat and then I hurried to put on one of my softer tunics. I wanted to choose something that would not only make me look good and presentable but also feel comfortable to wear.


“I'm coming!” I shouted in response feeling a bit too excited. Just a short moment later I ran quickly to the door. I opened it wide and saw Simon standing there his arms crossed in front of him and a serious expression on his face. I couldn't help but notice that there was a feeling of tension in the air that was hard to ignore.


“Is there something wrong?” I inquired as I looked closely at his face trying to find any signs or hints that might explain how he was feeling.


Simon moved his head from side to side indicating that he wasn’t sure about something. His eyebrows were pressed together in a way that showed he was deep in thought. “I don’t know for certain right now. Just… please come with me.”


I nodded my head and I could feel my heart starting to beat faster and faster. As we hurriedly walked through the pack house memories began to rush into my mind. Because I had a strong friendship with Alpha Rian I had spent many mornings walking through this same place.


I could still remember the comforting smells of the aged wood and freshly baked bread mixing together in a way that felt familiar and cozy. However today instead of that comforting feeling all I could sense was a feeling of unease and worry.


The sound of wolves talking filled the hallways their voices not very loud but they were still clear and sharp. Simon guided me toward the main meeting room. He pushed open a heavy door that made a creaking noise as it opened almost as if it were complaining about being moved. When I stepped inside the sight before me helped calm my racing heart.


Alpha Rian was standing at the front of the long table looking very much like a leader even though it was early in the morning and the light was soft. Next to him was his son Jake. His dark hair was falling over his forehead in a casual way which only added to his charm and made him seem even more intimidating.


However my stomach did a strange flip as I looked to my left and saw a person there. It was Brian who was the Beta to Alpha Karl. His presence felt heavy in the air almost like a shadow that was dark and filled with an uneasy feeling.


I couldn't help but frown at the sight of him and I instinctively crossed my arms in front of me. It was as if I was trying to protect myself from the disdain and negativity that seemed to come off him in waves.


“Hi Becky” Alpha Rian said to me as he greeted me. His voice was calm and steady but I could sense that there was a lot on his mind. “I really appreciate you coming here today.”


“Sure thing Alpha.” I said in response making sure to keep my voice polite and respectful.


Jake looked at me and gave a slight nod but his typical playful smile was missing. He said “Becky we really need your thoughts on this.”


Before I had the chance to say something back Brian moved closer to me. I could see that he was narrowing his eyes in a way that showed he was not happy. He said in a mocking tone “I really don’t understand why we even need her here in the first place.” He continued with a smirk “Remember the last time she was part of a situation? It did not turn out well at all did it?”


“Brian!” Jake called out in a loud and stern voice. He looked at the Beta with a sharp glare making it clear that he was not pleased. “This is really not the right moment for something like this.”


I tightly closed my hands into fists and I could feel the warm sensation of embarrassment spreading across my face. I took a deep breath and said “I was really trying to help.” Even though my voice was calm and steady I could sense that the tension in the air was growing stronger.


Brian moved a little bit closer to Becky and his strong presence seemed to be too much to handle. “Help? Do you realize that you almost got all of us killed? You have a talent for getting yourself into difficult situations Becky. We really don’t need to deal with another one of your let's just say mistakes.”


“That's enough!” Alpha Rian's voice was loud and powerful rising above their arguing like a sharp knife slicing through the air. “This meeting is not about any personal problems or disagreements among us. We have all come together here today to talk about the important situation that involves Alpha Karl.”


The room became very quiet and you could feel the strong presence of the Alpha’s power filling the space around us. I shifted in my seat feeling a bit uneasy and trying hard to concentrate on the important issue we were discussing.


“He has been poisoned” Alpha Rian said his voice sounding very serious and heavy with concern. “I gathered all of you here today because I want us to figure out the best way to deal with this difficult situation.”


“Have we determined who the person is that committed the act?” I asked inquisitively.


Before Alpha Rian had a chance to say anything Brian quickly jumped in and spoke up loudly. He emphasized “This is exactly what we need to figure out! We cannot just ignore this situation. It is very important that the entire pack knows what is going on and we all have to be careful and prepared!”
