Danger around

Becky's P.O.V

Jessy raised one eyebrow and made a playful teasing face as she said “Oh does little Becky want to pretend to play house with Karl? That’s so adorable and sweet!”

“That's enough.” Karl said his voice strong and clear making it obvious that he had made up his mind. “Jessy would you please step aside for just a moment so we can talk privately?”

Jessy folded her arms in a stubborn way and a little smile played on her lips that showed she was feeling confident.

She looked at the person and said “Why do you think I shouldn’t be here? I have just as much right to be in this place as you do.”

Karl spoke in a quiet but firm voice. He looked at the person in front of him and said “This is not a conversation we are having right now. I need you to go away. Please leave.”

Jessy let out a frustrated sigh showing that she was quite upset. However the icy stare that Karl was giving her made her pause for a moment.

“Alright I’ll do it” she said with a hint of sarcasm in her voice. But as she got up from her seat she threw me a look that said she felt victorious as if she had won some sort of small battle.

“I’ll just be right outside the door in case you need anything really important” she added “but please don’t take too long with him.”

Once Jessy stormed out of the room the door slammed shut behind her with a loud and echoing noise.

I found myself crossing my arms tightly against my chest as a sudden understanding hit me like a wave.

“So I suppose you wanted to have this conversation without your ‘fiancée’ being here right?”

I could really sense the uncomfortable atmosphere all around us. Karl let out a deep sigh and then he pushed his hand through his hair looking a little frustrated.

He said “Becky it’s not like that. You know that.” His words sounded so familiar to me like something I had been hearing way too much over the past few days.

“Is that not true?” I asked boldly taking a step closer to him. My heart was pounding in my chest as I faced him directly.

“It really feels like she’s just sitting there waiting for the perfect moment to strike.” I could feel the anger rising within me and I knew I couldn’t contain it any longer.

“Listen to me carefully” he began to speak but I had no intention of allowing him to escape from this situation so easily.

“Listen to me! I really need you to pay attention! I honestly tried to help you Karl. I pushed myself to my very limits giving it my all and what did I get in return for all my effort? Absolutely nothing! But then there’s her. She comes in without even breaking a sweat and just—fixes everything like it’s nothing at all?”

I could feel a warm sensation growing in my chest and my frustration overflowed as I struggled to find the right words to express how I felt.

“Becky I really need you to understand that it’s not only about getting better” Karl said as he spoke with genuine emotion in his voice almost begging her to listen.

“There are many other factors involved in this situation that you might not fully grasp or see right now.”

“Then please explain everything to me!” I shouted feeling my fists tighten by my sides. My heart was pounding so fast that I thought it might burst out of my chest.

“Why does she get to be the one everyone pays attention to? Why is she the person you turn to for support when I have been right here by your side this whole time?”

His expression changed and I noticed a look of conflict quickly appear on his face. His eyes began to move around almost frantically looking for an escape from what I was saying.

“You need to understand that this is a very complicated situation. I can’t simply—”

“Complicated?” I let out a harsh laugh that was more like a scornful scoff. “No Karl it’s not complicated at all! In fact it’s quite simple! Here I am putting everything I have on the line for you and yet you are still considering being with her! I’m so tired of this situation!”

At that very moment I reached a breaking point and could no longer handle the situation. I suddenly pivoted on my heel and swung the door to the room wide open.

The loud creaking sound of the door echoed around me mirroring the deep pain in my heart as I stepped out into the quiet hallway. With each beat of my heart I felt a strong reminder of just how frustrated I was.

As I walked further away I could sense his intense stare fixed on me. It felt heavy and overwhelming like an extra weight that I just couldn’t seem to get rid of.

“This is completely unbelievable! This is absolutely absurd!” I quietly said to myself as I hurried down the hallway feeling a whirlwind of thoughts racing through my mind just as quickly as my feet were moving.

With every step I took the sound of my footsteps seemed to reflect the chaos and confusion I was feeling inside as if it was banging against the very walls that held my sanity together.

“Becky please stop and wait for me!” Karl shouted as I walked away quickly but I chose not to slow down at all. I really disliked the feeling of being so powerless and vulnerable in this situation.

It was as if I were a little kid throwing a tantrum instead of an adult who had put in so much time and effort for someone who should have been grateful for everything I had done for them.

“Please just leave me alone!” I shouted in response my voice filled with intense anger. My heart felt heavy and pained from all the frustration that had been building up inside me over so many different moments and experiences.

“Darn it Becky!” he yelled once more but I didn’t stop to listen. Instead I quickened my steps feeling a strong need to get away from the confusing and overwhelming thoughts that were racing around in my head.

Just at the moment when I began to believe that I might finally have a little time to relax and feel at ease I suddenly became aware of something else. It was a feeling that I wasn't by myself there was another presence nearby.

I could sense something lurking behind me like a shadow following closely behind. As this realization washed over me I experienced an uncomfortable chill that slowly traveled up my spine making me feel uneasy and anxious….
