Don't protect her
Becky's P.O.V
The clean and sharp smell of antiseptic filled the air around me as I stood outside the infirmary. I felt a tight knot of anxiety in my stomach making me feel uneasy.
I could hear Jessy's voice getting louder and rising above the quiet muffled conversations of other people inside breaking the fragile sense of calm that was surrounding the place.
“Alpha Rian I really need you to allow me to see him!” Jessy said her voice firm and determined. She was also tapping her foot on the floor showing that she was feeling very impatient about the situation.
I looked over at Jake and he looked back at me with a worried expression on his face. His forehead was wrinkled showing that he was really concerned about the situation.
“Jessy.” he said “we can’t just rush in there without thinking. The very last thing that Karl needs right now is to have more stress in his life.”
“Stress? No Becky it’s much worse than that! He has been poisoned!” she exclaimed her green eyes shining brightly with annoyance. “I deserve to see him. He really needs my help right now.”
“Whether it’s the correct choice or not we are not going to put his recovery at risk. You hardly even like him anyway!” I replied quickly making an effort to keep my voice calm and composed.
But beneath that tough exterior there was a deeper feeling of fear—a fear of what could happen when she finally sees him again and a fear of the influence she has over feelings and emotions.
Jake took a step closer to where I was standing and he gently placed his hand on my shoulder. He looked me in the eye and said “You know Becky has a point Jessy. Karl is still in the process of getting better from his situation. We really can’t just put anyone into that role right now and that includes you.”
Jessy turned her head to look at Jake her eyes squinting slightly as she spoke. “You are supposed to be on my side and support me in this situation not team up with her in her little mission. Remember this whole issue is about Karl!”
“Jessy I want you to understand something important. I can see that you really care about him and honestly so do all of us. We all have feelings for him. However bursting in there without thinking won’t solve the problem. Rian made that decision for a specific reason and it’s important to respect that.”
Despite my attempt to explain my words seemed to have no effect on Jessy’s strong resistance. She responded by rolling her eyes and letting out a frustrated huff.
“You’re both being really silly and unreasonable” she said loudly her hands balled into tight fists. “When I found out that he had been poisoned it didn’t really matter to me how I used to feel about him in the past. The important thing is that he is now a member of my pack and I have to support him during this tough time. I need to be there for him.”
“Are you really saying I am part of your group?” I said with a sarcastic laugh. “When did you start caring about anything other than getting whatever you want? This is not just a game for you to play Jessy.”
She took a step closer to where I was standing and her voice dropped to a low and dangerous tone full of anger and bitterness. She said “You really don’t understand anything about who I am. Just because you used to go out with him doesn’t mean you still have any rights or say in this situation. That part of your life is finished. So please don’t act like you know me or my life like that.”
The air felt tense and full of energy between us as Jake suddenly stepped in front of me to stop things from escalating. He looked at me firmly and said “That’s enough Jessy. Everyone around us is feeling really anxious and stressed at the moment. Arguing and fighting like this won’t solve anything or make the situation better.”
“Please stop trying to protect her!” she exclaimed her anger spilling out. “You two are both so oblivious to the truth. Karl really needs me to support him right now. He has always needed my help and presence in his life!”
“Did you really think you were needed?” I asked my voice getting louder and bouncing off the cold hard walls around us. “Don’t pretend like you are some kind of hero who came to save him. You didn’t even bother to care about him when he was with me—when he actually needed someone to be there for him.”
She gave a sly smile and there was a gleam of triumph in her eyes that hinted at her satisfaction. “You know sometimes things don’t stay the same. Relationships can grow and transform over time Becky. By this point in your life you should really be aware of that.”
As our intense discussions went on and emotions started running high Alpha Rian took a step forward. He lifted his hand into the air to signal for everyone to quiet down and listen.
“Jessy” he said in a calm voice “I want to acknowledge that your determination is truly commendable. However it's really important for you to grasp the full meaning of what you are asking for. We need to consider that Karl is in a situation where he needs to heal and it’s crucial that this process happens without any additional chaos or disturbance around him.”
Jessy took a deep breath and straightened her shoulders showing that she was serious about what she was saying. There was a look of strong determination on her face that made it clear how important this was to her.
She spoke passionately saying “But don’t you understand? This is precisely the reason why I really need to meet with him.”
Rian appeared to be feeling conflicted and unsure. He turned his head to look back at the door of the infirmary as if he was really thinking about what Jessy had said. He explained “It’s important to remember that healing isn’t only about getting better physically. There’s also the emotional stress that comes with being in a situation like this. We want him to get better without adding any extra pressure or stress to what he’s already going through.”
“Then please allow me to go and talk to him” Jessy said continuing to insist. “I promise I won’t do anything that would bother or upset him. I just really need him to understand that he is not alone in this situation. I traveled all this way from my pack to be here for him.”
