Chapter 36 The Calm Before the Storm
These past few days, Evelyn didn't have much work. Adrian showed some mercy and allowed her to take a break during the holidays, which allowed her to rest well. So she spent her days sitting comfortably on her couch and reading books.
In the afternoon, William received a phone call and stayed in his study with his laptop for a long time. Evelyn didn't know what he was busy with, but with her personality, she definitely wouldn't peek or even ask.
However, she vaguely understood that he must have encountered something difficult again. Perhaps, he was going to leave once more.
Sure enough, during dinner, William brought up the matter at the dining table.
Not again! Another departure without any reason! Couldn't he even finish a meal properly? Evelyn set down her spoon and leaned back in her chair, looking straight into William's eyes. "Why? Tell me. What is it this time?"
"It's the same issue as last time. My father wants me to come back and resolve it. He tends to overreact these days. So I have to make a trip back, but it'll be quick! I promise!" William couldn't help but feel a bit nervous.
Evelyn softened her tone, seeing his sincere attitude. "When are you leaving? How long will you be gone? When will you come back? Are you not coming back at all?"
Evelyn was not pleased deep down. She never expected that, in just over half a year, William would change so much.
William continued to smile sincerely. "I don't know the exact duration yet." As soon as he finished speaking, he could feel a sudden drop in the room's temperature. He quickly added, "It won't exceed a month, I swear."
The phone at home rang, notifying them that Menier had escaped!
For the entire Chevalier Group and everyone in the Chevalier family, this was a deadly danger.
William didn't know if Menier had investigated this place and discovered Evelyn's presence. If he had, William needed to eliminate him quickly.
Now, it was urgent. Leaving this place as soon as possible was the best protection for Evelyn. "I… I might have to go to the airport later."
After hearing this, Evelyn stood up without saying a word, walked to the kitchen, and poured a glass of cold water. When she was in a bad mood, she would unconsciously drink a large amount of cold water. William knew this about her. He walked over to her and took the glass.
William looked at her, and in his heart, leaving this place was also incredibly difficult. Why was their peaceful and happy life so short-lived?
Evelyn still didn't say anything. William reached out his hand, wanting to hold her, but she cleverly evaded his embrace.
"Can't you feel it? I also don't want to leave you. I want to stay by your side, always." William's expression showed some pain, and his voice trembled slightly.
Then, Evelyn turned her head, and their gazes met. "Let's go. I've lost my appetite. I'll take you to the airport."
After saying that, without waiting for William, she grabbed the car keys and went downstairs. William quickly followed behind her.
This was the first time William sat in the passenger seat, watching Evelyn drive. Seeing that she had let go of her previous sadness, he slightly relaxed and rested his arm. "I'll come back soon, wait for me. Just wait for me."
Repeating these words, Evelyn smiled. "I won't wait for you. If I meet someone suitable, we'll break up."
William chuckled softly, "Then I can relax."
Evelyn glared at him, and he continued, "You definitely won't find someone more suitable than me. So I can rest assured."
"Don't be too confident. I'll find someone new tomorrow. Don't think you're so special or important." Evelyn smiled and looked at William.
He was anxious now. "I understand, you want me to say that I am self-aware and that you won't find anyone else, that you'll wait for me because I am special and important to you. I understand, I understand."
Evelyn realized that William really had no solution.
"In the future, Evelyn, when we are together for a long time, it's inevitable that we will have disagreements. If we must argue, let's stick to the matter at hand and not bring up unrelated issues. Promise me, okay?"
"Why are you suddenly talking about this?"
"Just thought of it. It's better to be prepared in advance." William suddenly turned his head and looked at Evelyn seriously. "I just wanted to tell you that no matter what happens, you must not doubt my sincerity toward you!"
"What sincerity do you have toward me?"
"Okay, okay, you win," William said and then added, "But I know how to win back."
Evelyn didn't understand what he meant by that statement.
After a while, she turned her head to take a glance at him. Seizing the opportunity, William leaned in and kissed her lips, lightly nibbling on her lower lip as he pulled away. "That's better!"
Evelyn almost threw away the steering wheel and couldn't help but shout, "Are you asking for trouble?"
"If you are willing to die with me, I really can accept it. I am willing to die now." William really said this. He did not want to go back and face the harsh reality. He just wanted to stay by Evelyn's side, forever, just like this.
Evelyn didn't fully grasp his words, but his tone didn't sound like a joke. "Then let's die together." She stepped on the accelerator, and the red Ferrari darted out like an arrow released from a bow, swiftly weaving through the night.
Ignoring red and green lights, ignoring safety and stability, just indulged in this moment.
The usual forty-minute journey was completed in less than twenty minutes today. Stopped at the airport entrance, Evelyn suddenly realized that whenever she encountered William, she would become particularly abnormal.
She drove a bit further before stopping by the side of the road, acknowledging how fast they were. William remained calm sitting beside her, which made her inexplicably angry. In any case, everything made her unable to control her anger.
William glanced at the time and reached out to open the car door, but with a snap, Evelyn locked the car. William raised both hands in a surrender gesture. "Goddess? What are your orders?"
Evelyn motioned for him to come closer. Without hesitation, William leaned in. Evelyn reached out and grabbed her sunglasses, and without thinking, she smashed them onto William's face. "You're such a jerk!"
William knew this was too sudden, and it was normal for her to react this way.
"I am," he said.
Evelyn didn't know what else to say when she saw him like this. She directly pinched his face and leaned in.
She bit on his lips like a small beast without any tactics or understanding of rules. William hesitated only for a moment before taking charge of the situation.
Holding her, he felt a sense of reality.
Evelyn had no idea when she had turned into a puddle of mush in William's embrace. But in his arms, at this moment, he truly belonged to her.
They didn't release each other for a long time.
Evelyn glanced at him and unlocked the car door, saying, "Get going! I'm afraid I won't be able to let go if you stay any longer."
Opening the car door, William stood outside and said, "I'm leaving."
Without hesitation, Evelyn drove away as if she had gone crazy. William was left standing in the same spot, helplessly concerned about his goddess while thinking, "This is the real Evelyn."
On the way, Evelyn felt very frustrated. If she went home like this, she would feel suffocated in the evening. She had to find some way to vent.
When Vivian received Evelyn's call, she was at home dealing with Charles, who had come to find his cufflinks again. She felt that being rich was really troublesome. Even a small cufflink had a sky-high value. If she lost it, she wouldn't be able to sleep all night. It was truly annoying.
"What's wrong?"
"Let's go out for a drink tonight."
"Okay! The usual place. Wait for me."
One should always have a friend who doesn't need many words. Just one sentence should be enough. They should accompany you without asking for the reason.
Charles sat in the living room and asked like a host, "Who is it?"
"Mind your own business! I can't find your cufflinks anymore. You figure it out yourself! If you want money, there's none. If you want your life, it's right here. Take it." Vivian had no patience left. "I'm leaving now." As she spoke, she went to change her shoes.
Seeing her like this, Charles became even more curious about the person who had just called. So, he approached her and asked, "Who was it, Vivian?"
Afraid that he would go crazy again, Vivian had to compromise. "It's Evelyn. I'm going to find her. You figure it out yourself."
Only then did Charles feel relieved. "Let's go. Where are we going? Shall I drive you?"
Suddenly, Vivian seemed to understand something. He had been waiting at her house all this time just to take advantage of her to pursue Evelyn. She felt a bit low.
"What are you thinking?"
"Let's go. I'll take you to meet Evelyn."
All the way, Charles watched Vivian, who was dejected and lacked any spirit. The car stopped in front of an upscale bar. "You guys are meeting in a place like this?"
Vivian automatically assumed that it was because Charles didn't trust Evelyn drinking alone at night, which was unsafe. So she said, "Evelyn likes to come here when she's in a bad mood. Let me teach you, don't keep asking her questions later. Just go along with what she says and let her speak for herself. Otherwise, she'll become more and more irritable."
Charles understood perfectly well. Vivian had already started teaching him how to pursue Evelyn.
No words were needed, he could only watch her with great interest.
After entering, Vivian went straight to her usual spot. Evelyn was indeed there. It seemed she had already arrived when she called her. She was a little drunk.
There was also an unfamiliar man next to her, holding a glass of alcohol, trying to get her to drink it. Without hesitation, Vivian walked over and took the glass from him, drank it all in one gulp, and tossed the glass to the ugly man. "Is that enough? Now get lost!"
The man looked at the glass and felt that the good liquor was wasted. He glared at her and then left.
Charles stood behind and saw Vivian like this for the first time, finding it quite refreshing.
Vivian made an effort to support Evelyn and, seeing Charles, said, "Come help me!"
"I thought you could handle it." Charles suppressed a smile.
"I don't need free labor, am I foolish?" Vivian replied.
