Chapter 39 Her Limit
Vivian finally spotted Charles as soon as she entered the supermarket. She was surprised to find herself attracting attention today. Many people were looking at her, giving her looks and whispering, as if she had just been released from the zoo.
With this realization, she instantly understood something and turned around. Indeed, who else could it be but Charles? Seeing someone already taking out their phone, she quickly displayed her well-acquired virtue of being helpful and swiftly pulled Charles away, dragging the shopping cart to a less crowded area.
"Why did you come out on your own again?" Vivian asked.
Charles couldn't help but press his temple. The way this woman speaks is truly beyond a normal person's comprehension. "Just came out for a stroll."
"Alright, it's crowded here. Aren't you afraid of being recognized and photographed?"
"It's fine. Going to the supermarket and buying things is normal."
Yes, celebrities are also human beings. If he goes shopping in a supermarket and gets photographed, it shouldn't be a big deal. Vivian finally realized this. As long as she didn't appear with him in the news, it should be fine. "You can shop by yourself. I'll go out first, and you can come out later. That way, it won't be a problem."
After saying that, she turned to leave, but in her peripheral vision, she noticed Charles following her. She decided not to mind him. "You can go first then."
She moved aside to let him pass. Charles looked at the faces plastered on the walls and found it quite amusing.
"What are you laughing at? Hurry up and go outside," Vivian urged.
"It's nothing. Let's go together." After saying that, he naturally held her hand, leaving Vivian stunned in her place.
"Let's go." Charles pushed the shopping cart and then held the shopping list Vivian had prepared. He picked out the items one by one as written on the list. Soon, they had everything they needed. Vivian followed him, unsure of what to do, as she watched him carefully choose the products.
The two of them left the supermarket carrying their bags. It was already completely dark outside. It was March, and the sky darkened quickly. Charles escorted Vivian to Evelyn's apartment building and bid her goodbye before turning back to his own home.
Vivian entered the apartment in a daze, changed her shoes, and placed the two big bags on the table. Evelyn noticed her distracted state and managed to finish making a salad and pan-fried steak in a short time, completely forgetting to make the main course.
"I'll cook it. It will be quick," Vivian hurriedly said.
"No need. I'm not that hungry. This will do," Evelyn replied.
Vivian didn't insist any further, and the two of them ate the meal with soup.
In the end, Vivian bit her fork and asked Evelyn, "Evelyn, how can one understand a person's heart?" Evelyn was also troubled by this question because she wanted to know the answer herself. "By feeling with the heart?"
Vivian sighed helplessly. This was the limit of Evelyn's understanding. However, Evelyn had improved a lot in terms of temperament since she started dating William.
As Vivian tidied up the dishes, she said, "Haven't you noticed? You have changed a lot yourself!"
"What change?" Evelyn asked.
"Your personality and attitude toward others have changed. You're not as cold as before," Vivian thought for a moment and said.
"Who's cold?" Evelyn glared at her, ready to attack.
Vivian begged for mercy, playing along, "I was talking about myself, not you! It's me, it's me."
Seeing Vivian like this, Evelyn couldn't help but feel helpless and amused. "I really don't understand how certain people can still be attracted to you."
"Wait, what?" Vivian was surprised.
Their banter was reminiscent of the past.
The next day, when Evelyn met Adrian, he began complaining as soon as they saw each other. "As an assistant general manager, I'm always working for you every day. My mood is on the verge of collapse. Believe me, I'll end up depressed one day."
Evelyn remained silent, thinking to herself that she was still the largest shareholder of Silver Media, and yet she was working day in and day out.
"I found you an agent. I guarantee you'll be satisfied this time. He should be here soon. Just wait a little longer. Finally, I can be free," he joked, but Evelyn didn't react, so he left.
In the afternoon, Evelyn suddenly saw Antonio in the studio. She immediately thought of what Adrian said in the morning about finding her an agent. When she saw Antonio walking toward her, she understood. "How much did Adrian spend to bring you over?"
"How did you know it was me? You know how stingy Adrian is," Antonio teased.
Evelyn smiled and didn't say anything. It was improper to openly talk about her boss like this. "Are you sure you want to switch?"
"Yeah, I wanted to come with you from the beginning. I'm just arriving now, is it too late?" Antonio remained the same. His smile always made Evelyn feel relaxed and reassured, something that others couldn't provide.
Evelyn shook her head and continued to focus on the shoot. Although she had started working on film and television projects, she hadn't given up her old profession. There were many rumors in the industry, speculating that Evelyn's entry into the film industry was too high, and it would be difficult for her to surpass it in the future.
Antonio wasn't worried about this. Evelyn had never let anyone down in terms of her abilities, and she was still so young. The future couldn't be summarized by these speculations.
"Are you overwhelmed with work lately?" Antonio asked, concerned about her well-being, as she didn't seem to be in the best state.
"No," Evelyn replied.
She answered swiftly, always taking responsibility for her own problems and never looking for excuses. "But why are you starting work immediately? Don't you need a break?"
"I don't even feel like I'm working when I'm with you," Antonio said nonchalantly.
In the evening, as usual, Evelyn called William, but a female voice answered, saying only "hello." She knew immediately that it must be the foreign woman she had met at the airport. Realizing it was morning there, Evelyn decided not to awkwardly ask what William was doing and promptly hung up the phone.
When William returned from the meeting room, he thought about calling Evelyn but realized there were no missed calls on his phone.
Without thinking much of it, he turned to look at Odile, who was sitting on the couch sipping coffee. She held the cup gracefully, maintaining her usual elegant demeanor.
"Why are you here today?"
"Just wanted to see you. It's been a few days since you returned, but you didn't invite me for tea or a meal," Odile said.
"Sorry, I've been quite busy lately," William said distantly.
"Is it Menier's matter?" Odile asked.
William nodded, not wanting to discuss much with Odile about these things.
Seeing that he didn't want to say much, Odile didn't continue to inquire further. After all, she understood William. If he didn't want to talk about something, it was probably because he didn't want to burden the other person with his problems.
"It's almost noon. Let's have lunch together," Odile suggested, fearing that he might refuse.
William knew her intentions and said, "I'm a bit busy. My assistant has already ordered takeout. Maybe next time."
After seeing Odile off, William finally called Evelyn.
They chatted about random things, and at the door, Odile overheard their conversation. Her heart quickly grew cold as she realized that William wasn't too busy with work; he simply didn't want to see her.
Why did their lifelong friendship mean less to him than a woman he had only known for a few months in the United States?
The next day, as Antonio discussed the upcoming week's work plan with Evelyn, she suddenly had an idea when she saw the plan to go to France. Should she go and find out if someone was having an affair? The thought made her oddly happy.
Antonio saw Evelyn grinning while holding the plan and had the surreal feeling that his eyes were playing tricks on him. He rubbed his eyes and looked again, only to realize that it was true. He hesitantly reached out and touched Evelyn's forehead. "Are you feeling sick?"
Evelyn swatted his hand away. "Are you the one who's sick?"
"Are you alright? Is there something wrong with the plan? If you're not satisfied, tell me sooner rather than later. It will be difficult to make changes later on," Antonio said.
"When have I ever done such a thing?" Evelyn scoffed.
Antonio really wanted to say that this was something she used to enjoy doing, but for the sake of his own wellbeing, he held back and just said, "I must be mistaken."
There were still some miscellaneous tasks to be completed before preparing for the trip to France.
Evelyn unexpectedly felt a sense of excitement. She wondered if people would be surprised by her sudden trip.
Vivian could clearly sense her abnormality and asked, "What's wrong with you? You seem strange, and it's starting to scare me. Are you okay? Is work too busy and tiring? Just finish your work and don't push yourself too hard. It's not good for your health."
"What's wrong with all of you? Do I have to wear a gloomy face all the time?" Evelyn asked.
"No! It's just that seeing you like this suddenly is a bit unusual, but if you continue to be like this from now on, it would be best! Life should minimize worries and maximize happiness, right?" Vivian explained immediately.
"Okay, I understand."
"I guess either William is coming back or you're going to see him! Am I right?" Vivian suddenly thought of William.
This time, Evelyn truly laughed, "Are you actually being smart?"
"Did I actually guess right?" Vivian happily danced around. "Well, all your unusual behavior must be related to William, so I'm right!"
Evelyn was speechless. Did William really change her that much? This wasn't a good thing, but she wanted to indulge herself, which wasn't too bad. Regardless of whether the ending was good or not, at least she wouldn't regret it or feel disappointed in herself. This was also good.
Vivian thought about how Evelyn had truly fallen in love with William. She was both happy and worried because sometimes, being too devoted could be both good and bad.
She only hoped that her Evelyn meeting this William would be a great thing. That was what she longed for the most.
Many years later, Vivian looked at Evelyn and realized that she was incredibly wrong, absurdly wrong. But at that time, she discovered that it was too late. It really was too late.
