Chapter 71 A Different Evelyn

Early in the morning, Antonio came to pick up Evelyn. He also brought a big bag of healthy snacks. As he entered, Evelyn looked awkwardly at him, feeling embarrassed. Antonio calmly placed the bag of snacks on the table and said, "These are for Luis."

Luis has been well-trained by Evelyn. He always wakes up early. When he heard someone calling his name, he quickly got up and rushed into the living room. He smiled brightly when he saw Antonio. Remembering what his mother had told him before, he greeted him and showed an unusually friendly attitude.

Antonio walked up to him, tentatively patting his head. Luis didn't resist and continued to smile. Antonio crouched down and said, "Tomorrow I'll be taking your mommy to work, so today I will take you out as compensation. Is that okay? I've also brought snacks for you."

Luis looked at Evelyn. "Mom, do I have to go to school? After I come back, can I go out and play with Uncle?" He said this with a pitiful look. He hadn't gone out to play since he came back. Now that there was someone who could take him out, he had to seize the opportunity.

Evelyn was speechless. His pitiful appearance made it seem like she was mistreating her child. She smiled and nodded before giving some instructions to Luis. "You have to listen to Uncle Antonio, okay? Go and register at the school later. Alright?"

Luis nodded enthusiastically and thanked Antonio politely before returning to his room. Evelyn, who was following behind, said, "I'll come over later to help you pick out clothes and squeeze toothpaste. Just play by yourself for a while."

Antonio was a bit surprised. He watched Evelyn eagerly and realized that all mothers were like this. She was a completely different Evelyn now, someone he had never seen before. It was a pity that this Evelyn didn't belong to him. Suppressing these thoughts, he regained his composure and stood up from the ground. "You go ahead and take care of your things. I'll wait for you."

Evelyn nodded and then thought of something after turning around. "Do you have anything to do today?" She immediately felt that her question was inappropriate. He came over with good intentions to accompany the child, but it seemed like she was sarcastically implying that he had nothing else to do. Evelyn felt that she had really gone too far and wondered how she had become so strange after coming back this time.

Antonio didn't care at all and shook his head. "There's nothing much to do at the cafe. I'm just an idle person. If you hadn't come back to give me something to do, I would have grown mushrooms out of boredom." Antonio casually picked up a toy car from the coffee table and kept fiddling with it, making lighthearted jokes that weren't funny.

Evelyn then turned and went inside the room. But she heard Antonio's voice from behind. "You don't owe me any apologies, so there's no need to feel uncomfortable." He added, "Just be like before." Antonio still had a faint smile on his face. He was trying hard to make Evelyn feel at ease, like the agent and good friend he used to be.

Evelyn was deeply moved. Then she went into the room to find Luis. Antonio looked at her retreating figure, feeling familiar yet unfamiliar. It had only been five years, but how had she changed so much? However, it seemed that because of this child, she was more like an ordinary person now, and her joys and sorrows became more apparent. Antonio thought this was a good thing.

Before long, Evelyn came out holding Luis's hand. Antonio, Evelyn, and Luis went downstairs together. Evelyn was dressed plainly, but she still drew attention from passersby. Luis covered his mouth and chuckled silently. "Hahaha, mom! Oh no! Evelyn, you're so beautiful! Hahaha!" He immediately corrected himself once he realized they were in a public place.

The three of them got into the car, and Evelyn pinched Luis's cheeks. Then she suddenly remembered something and looked at Antonio's car. "Last time I saw you, it wasn't this car, right?" For some reason, Evelyn felt that she was really boring.

Helplessly, Antonio thought of the car that Hailey had crashed into. He had driven that car for a long time, but it was still in the repair shop now. "I've had it for too long. It got damaged recently, so it's being repaired," he explained casually, avoiding the real issue. He hadn't expected Hailey to be his father's student. That really surprised him last time.

Evelyn continued to play and tease Luis while giving a nod as a response to Antonio. At a red light, Antonio looked at the playful pair in the rearview mirror.

Evelyn's personality seemed to have become more cheerful. She appeared softer and more innocent. Raising a child on her own must have been difficult.

Of course, Evelyn didn't notice Antonio's distraction. She continued to chat with Luis without much thought. "Since you're going to school, you can't stay at home like this. You know... well... you have to know more things, understand? You should try to fit in with those kids. Make more friends, okay? Promise me."

Surprisingly, she was acting cute with a child. What astonished Antonio even more was the slight expression of disdain mixed with helplessness on Luis's young and innocent face. He looked at Evelyn and nodded absentmindedly, realizing that the roles of these two had reversed completely.

The school was very close to Evelyn's residence. It was just one traffic light away. Evelyn was about to lead Luis out of the car when Antonio stopped her abruptly. "Let me take Luis. I'm afraid it might be inconvenient for you." Antonio understood that she definitely couldn't accompany Luis to register in her current state.

"Luis, sorry." Evelyn apologized sincerely to him. Her tone and attitude made Antonio burst into laughter. Luis reassured her and said that it was okay. He then entered the school with Antonio. As it was the first day of school, there were already many parents at the entrance. Evelyn watched Luis's figure from the car and felt a lot of guilt in her heart.

Her comeback would continue to burden him like this. She wondered how many similar situations would occur in the future. For a moment, Evelyn started to doubt whether she had made the right choice. Why did she have to make a comeback? She had asked herself this question a lot of times, but she truly didn't know.

Evelyn continued to stare blankly at the school gate. It took Antonio more than half an hour to come out with Luis. They both seemed very happy. They were joking about something. Evelyn was even more grateful to Antonio. She truly didn't know how to repay him for his kindness.

Indeed, having a child makes one sensitive. Evelyn restrained a smile and laughed quietly. As soon as Antonio opened the car door, he saw Evelyn's ambiguous expression. He felt a little confused, but he lifted Luis into the car and glanced at Evelyn before sitting in the driver's seat. Then, he turned to Luis and said, "We're going to play now!"

The little one became even more excited. From their conversation, Evelyn learned that Antonio had promised to take Luis to an amusement park. But as thoughts of the amusement park entered her mind, Evelyn started panicking. What should she do? She thought of certain people... Étienne loved amusement parks.
