Chapter 62 Helplessness

This day was unusually difficult for Evelyn. She always thought she had a natural talent for enduring pain, but she didn't expect that when she entered the delivery room, she would almost pass out from the pain. It was so painful! She kept murmuring "mother" in her mouth, as if only her mother could give her the strength to persevere in times like this.

Evelyn kept telling herself that as long as she held on a little longer, it would be fine. Just a little longer.

Ray paced back and forth outside the delivery room. Just by listening to Evelyn's cries, he knew how much pain she was in. Due to the abnormal position of the fetus, Evelyn was having a difficult delivery. Before going in, she repeatedly emphasized that she wanted to give birth naturally and not through a caesarean section. So Ray had no choice but to let her choose such a difficult path.

The first time Ray saw Evelyn was when they coincidentally opened their doors at the same time. When their eyes met, he couldn't help but be amazed. When did such a beautiful woman move in next door? It seemed like she had just moved in. Evelyn noticed him and nodded as a greeting. Ray, who was planning to move out soon, suddenly didn't want to leave.

Afterwards, due to various reasons, he got to know Evelyn, and for him, it was truly a wonderful thing.

Evelyn didn't tell Vivian her due date. She really didn't want anyone to see her crying and screaming over this foolish mistake. The child was innocent, but she couldn't forgive herself. She hated Étienne, she hated herself, and she didn't know who else she could hate. Sweat mixed with tears as they fell, and she realized how piercing the pain was.

In that moment, a face appeared in her mind. She didn't know what feeling it was or why she thought of him. She just felt that all of this was really like a dream. Why did she have to endure all of this? Why was it so painful and still couldn't make her sober?

Finally, the cry of a baby was heard, and Ray finally felt relieved. The joy in his heart overflowed. When he saw Evelyn, her face was pale as she held the baby for her to see. "It's a boy! You did great!"

Evelyn looked at the little face and felt a mixture of bitterness and joy in her heart. She could only force a smile. She looked at Ray and said, "Thank you."

Ray wanted to reach out and touch her face, but as soon as his hand extended, Evelyn turned her face away and spoke in a calm and distant tone, "You broke the rules."

Ray was at a loss and had to retract his hand. "Don't say thank you. This is also my child," he said nervously, watching Evelyn, afraid that she would deny it. Fortunately, Evelyn just smiled weakly and remained silent. Yes, from now on, this will be their child.

Evelyn received a phone call from Vivian, who exploded in anger. "How could you do this?! We already agreed! How can you go and give birth without telling me?! Can't you see why I'm angry?!"

Evelyn could only feign helplessness. "I'm really tired now. Are you still going to scold me? I sent you the address. Are you coming or not?"

"I'll be right there!" Vivian exclaimed happily. After hanging up the phone, she rushed back home. As soon as she opened the door, she found Charles at home as well. "Why are you home at this hour?" she asked before sprinting into the house. She pulled out a suitcase and started to pack things in a disorderly fashion.

Charles leaned against the door and watched her. "I had some free time today. What are you up to?" He walked over, held her hand, and asked, "Where are you going?" Due to work, they hadn't had the chance to go on their honeymoon yet. Was she really planning to travel alone?

"I'm going to see Evelyn! She just had a baby!" Vivian looked at Charles, her eyes shining. Charles could tell that she was genuinely happy.

"Do you love babies? Shall we have a child too?" Charles said sadly, never expecting to feel jealous of a newborn baby. Truly hopeless.

Vivian was taken aback by the sudden change of topic. "What's wrong? Why this all of a sudden? I'm going to Melbourne! Move aside!" she said, trying to push him away. But suddenly, she remembered something and jumped directly onto him. She hooked her arm around him and gently stroked the back of his neck with one hand, feeling his instant tension.

Leaning over, she bit his ear and asked in a teasing voice, "Do you want to come with me?"

Charles found himself speechless for a moment. "Um, it's definitely impossible to go now."

Hearing this, Vivian let go and jumped down. "Never mind then."

Charles took out his phone and called Sam. "Two tickets for the afternoon flight to Melbourne. Move my current workload back by a week." Vivian understood that he had agreed. Then why did he say it was impossible to go? "Why afternoon? I've already taken time off. We can leave in half an hour after we pack up."

Charles looked at her without saying anything. He started loosening his tie and threw his suit jacket aside. Vivian realized something was going wrong and kept stepping back. "Haha, dear, don't do this. It's not good to make a scene in broad daylight."

In the end, Vivian came to a conclusion: never challenge Charles. He would make her look really bad if she did. She boarded the plane languidly and glanced at Charles, who looked refreshed as he read the newspaper. She felt indignant in her heart.

Charles, dressed in casual attire, didn't wear sunglasses and had a smile on his face. This resulted in flight attendants running back and forth, asking if he needed anything. Vivian tilted her head and thought to herself, "He's such a flirt!"

Seeing that he didn't react much, Vivian became angry and put on an eye mask. Afterwards, she could sense that someone was approaching, but it seemed like Charles stopped them, and finally, it became quiet. Vivian seemed to understand a bit of what it meant. He might not say nice words, but he could show her with his actions.

When they arrived at Evelyn's place, Vivian held the wrinkled baby in her arms and exclaimed happily, "Evelyn, your baby is so cute! Haha! Did you give him a name?"

Ray came in from outside the house and replied to Vivian in French, "Conroy, his name."

Vivian was stunned. She looked at this unfamiliar man and then at Evelyn. She asked her in English, "What does this mean?"

Evelyn asked Ray to leave first before sitting with Vivian. Vivian asked her, "Please don't tell me this is true love?"

Evelyn smiled helplessly. "It's complicated. Anyway, I married him."

Vivian was so shocked that she almost threw the child out. "Are you crazy? How can you just marry like that? Who is this person?! When did you marry him? Evelyn, how could you--" Vivian quickly figured it out. She must have done it for the sake of the child.

Evelyn just smiled. "I didn't ask you to come here to scold me. I have my reasons for doing this. Don't worry. I'm confident, and I will take care of myself. Relax." Evelyn spoke slowly and clearly. Vivian was still very sad. She did not understand why this side of Evelyn made her feel so uncomfortable.

"Antonio quit his job and opened a coffee shop. I went there on the opening day. Do you know what the shop is called?" Vivian decided to tell Evelyn about his infatuation and devotion; she thought she should let her know.

Evelyn smiled again. "What is it called?"

Vivian let out a deep sigh. "Firefly." Looking at Evelyn, she knew that Evelyn was also feeling unsettled. "I really didn't expect Antonio to act this way toward you."
