Chapter 52 The Coldness of the Heart
Evelyn's current job consisted of waking up in the morning, going to the company to have coffee, read magazines, and listen to gossip. She would rest at noon and repeat the morning's routine in the afternoon before going home. It was fine not to be given any work; she focused on taking care of her pregnancy.
When the house is sold and the money in hand is almost enough, it will be time to leave. However, many things are entangled in her heart. Temporarily quitting the entertainment industry is inevitable. She can't go out with a big belly, especially since she is unmarried and pregnant. It's very likely that she will never get married.
Evelyn couldn't help but smile bitterly.
Some things will never let her live in peace. Evelyn thought to herself. Sure enough, in the afternoon, she was called to the office. The reason was the postponed release of "Shall I Compare You To A Spring Day". Evelyn really wanted to know if the game of blaming others was really interesting.
"Evelyn, you need to resolve this matter. Do you really know what's going on?" Manager Zack said some nonsense while looking at Evelyn.
Evelyn sighed in her heart. Can I really solve this matter? But she didn't say anything, just stood there quietly. She had been feeling tired recently, luckily she wasn't wearing high heels, or it would have been worse. Yet, standing like this was still tiresome. It had been half an hour, she couldn't bear it anymore.
Finally, Antonio broke in, "Zack, I am Evelyn's manager. If you have something to say, you should say it to me."
Antonio looked at Evelyn, whose complexion was not very good, and pretended to be angry as he said, "Can you stop causing trouble for us? Get out."
Evelyn gratefully glanced at Antonio and then pushed open the door. She entered the elevator in a daze, just wanting to quickly reach the 3rd floor and rest well. But the elevator went up all the way to the top floor, and only then did Evelyn realize that she had made a stupid mistake and taken the wrong elevator.
She could only pray that she wouldn't encounter the person she shouldn't.
As the elevator doors opened, before Evelyn even lifted her eyelids, she already knew that she had guessed it correctly. Looking at those pair of shoes, she suddenly felt a sense of sadness. Was the young man in short sleeves and jeans still the person in front of her?
Pretending not to see was impossible anymore, Evelyn could only stand in the elevator.
Étienne originally just passed by the elevator, but at the moment the door opened, looking at the person standing inside, he felt his heart beat unexpectedly. How much he wished she had come to find him? But the reality proved otherwise. Étienne calmly strode into the elevator and pressed the button for the first floor.
Evelyn felt like she was going crazy. Why did his scent keep seeping into her heart in such a confined space? Aren't those past events clear enough? She had been foolish time and time again, but not this time, absolutely not.
After the rainy night, this was the first time the two of them were so close. At other times, they had only seen each other from a distance, and neither of them said anything, each lost in their own thoughts.
As the elevator descended continuously, Étienne really wished it would slow down, just a little slower.
On the other hand, Evelyn's mood was completely opposite. She just hoped to go down quickly, to distance herself.
"Step back a little."
Finally, the elevator stopped on the third floor, and Evelyn didn't hesitate to walk out. She felt her steps were a bit unsteady, but fortunately, she didn't fall.
Étienne couldn't help but notice her pale face and her overall emaciated appearance, which made him worry for her.
Seeing Evelyn coming out of the president's private elevator, the onlookers naturally got excited and started saying nasty things:
"Oh my god! Look at her, she really has no idea of her place!"
"I think she wants to get close to the president!"
"Doesn't she see how she has turned out herself?"
"She's shameless!"
Antonio stepped out of the elevator and heard these words. Without thinking twice, he directly addressed those people, saying, "I don't know what meaning or purpose your words hold. I have all the dirt on every one of you, and this is your final warning."
Antonio was a top-notch agent in the industry, so naturally, everyone felt intimidated by his words. Everyone dispersed as such.
Antonio caught up with Evelyn, noticed her complexion, and said, "What happened to you? Just a while ago, you were fine. How did this happen?"
"I'm fine. I just want to drink some hot water." Evelyn sat down on the sofa, and Antonio brought her some hot water, only to find out that she had already fallen asleep. He crouched down, looked at her, weary and exhausted, not knowing what had happened. She always liked to sleep.
Unable to resist any longer, he reached out and gently touched her face.
Étienne thought of Evelyn's pale face from earlier and couldn't bear it. He went downstairs to the third floor and stood at the door, witnessing such an intimate scene. He couldn't help but sneer. It served him right to be tormented. All those claims of not being in love were just excuses. Now, he truly believed Evelyn when she said she had never loved him.
Étienne felt a chill in his heart at that moment. He had thought his efforts could truly move her, but it turned out to be a joke. Sophie watched Étienne in a daze and walked up to him, asking, "Étienne, what's wrong with you?"
Étienne didn't pay attention to her and simply waved his hand before heading straight into the office.
Sophie stared intensely at Étienne, wanting to see through his thoughts, but why was it so difficult? Everything from the past felt like a puff of smoke! That's why he could ignore her like this now. She was increasingly doubtful of whether her current choice was right or wrong. She really didn't know.
In the evening, Vivian made a pot of soup for Evelyn, but before she could take a few sips, Evelyn said she didn't want to eat. Vivian held the spoon, wishing she could pry open Evelyn's mouth. "Which pregnant woman is like you? Look at how thin you've become. You have to eat. What about the baby?"
Evelyn couldn't argue with her and reluctantly took a few more bites. Vivian finally felt relieved. "I bought a cookbook, so don't worry. I'll take care of your dinners from now on. Also, in a while, your belly will be noticeably bigger. What about the company?"
"Vivian, is Melbourne fun?"
Vivian paused for a moment and smiled. "Well, it's an interesting place. You'll love it!"
Baffled, how did Melbourne come up out of nowhere? Evelyn turned to look at Vivian and asked, "Are you alright? What's the matter?"
"I want to go abroad. I can start preparing the paperwork, but I don't know where to go," Evelyn said, taking a sip of water.
Vivian rushed out of the kitchen, "Have you really made up your mind?"
Evelyn hesitated for the first time, "I don't know yet."
"In that case, if you're going abroad, Melbourne wouldn't be a bad choice. I have many friends there who can take care of you. I still can't believe this is happening. How did you get pregnant, Evelyn? There's a little baby inside your belly now. Are you scared, Evelyn, Evelyn...?" Vivian turned around and realized that Evelyn had already fallen asleep on the couch, as expected of a pregnant woman who loves to sleep.
Leisurely, the days at work passed like a vacation. Evelyn gradually started doing some work, but nothing significant. Antonio entered, supporting his forehead, "Evelyn..."
Evelyn knew that whenever Antonio called her by name like this, it wasn't for a good reason, and sure enough, he said, "This is an invitation to a banquet tonight at the MF Club. What should we do?"
Evelyn was straightforward, "Let's go then, what's the problem?"
So, the afternoon was filled with preparations. Antonio had other work in the evening, so he could only drop Evelyn off at the entrance of the MF Club. It was an exclusive venue that wasn't open to the public on regular days, only hosting commercial receptions and banquets that couldn't be booked without sufficient money and status.
"You go ahead, keep your phone with you, and call me when it's done, I'll come pick you up." Seeing Antonio's reluctant expression, Evelyn couldn't help but find it amusing.
"I got it, you can leave now." Antonio nodded.
Sitting in the Lamborghini behind them, Étienne watched the two figures by the roadside, allowing emotions to spread endlessly in his heart.
Today, Evelyn was wearing a floor-length gown. It looked ordinary from the front, but it revealed infinite elegance when she turned around. In the past, other than on the runway, Evelyn rarely had the chance to wear such clothes. But suddenly, she felt the urge to try it on, knowing that she wouldn't be able to dress like this for the next few months. She thought it wouldn't hurt to give it a try.
Entering the venue alone, Evelyn happened to bump into Alan at the entrance. They had met on the set of "Shall I Compare You To A Spring Day," and even though it was uncertain whether the TV series would air or not, they had spent a considerable amount of time together and had become quite familiar with each other.
Alan stepped forward, extending his arm, and Evelyn didn't refuse, directly linking her arm with his.
Alan glanced at Evelyn, calmly engaging in small talk, "Why are you getting thinner?"
"It's alright," Evelyn didn't know how to answer. Lately, everyone who cared about her had been asking the same question: Why did she lose weight? Why was she getting thinner?
She didn't know! Vivian clearly treats her like a pig every day, feeding her and all. These thoughts swirled around in her head.
"Lost in thought?" Alan asked.
"Yeah, it's been a while since I've been in a place like this," Evelyn said calmly.
Although it was the truth, Alan felt a twinge of pain in his heart upon hearing her words. He had a vague sense that things hadn't been going well for her lately, like she had offended someone and was constantly being suppressed. He didn't know how to comfort her in that moment.
Alan was originally a popular candidate for the lead male role in idol dramas, naturally tall and extraordinarily handsome. Evelyn had recently become thin, and this dress accentuated her delicate and charming figure. As they entered arm in arm, everyone couldn't help but take a few extra glances.
However attractive they may be, they were not the focus of the evening. It was widely known that the secret CEO of WE Company would also be attending tonight. WE Company was simply a miracle in the industry, rapidly rising to prominence in the mainland entertainment circle in a short period of time. Regardless of their qualifications, all the stars and actors in the industry were skilled in their own right.
The mastermind behind it all remained unknown to most people, and tonight, most of the attendees were naturally drawn to the explosive gossip surrounding this individual. As for Evelyn, she had been in the spotlight at the end of last year but had suddenly lost momentum at the start of this year, almost disappearing completely. Her presence tonight was also significant news.
In any case, everyone was eagerly awaiting this spectacle tonight.
