Chapter 47 Being Drunk Makes It Less Uncomfortable
The two sat at the dining table. Vivian looked at Evelyn, who had only taken a few bites of her food and seemed to have no appetite. Vivian stood up, went to the refrigerator, and took out a chilled beer. She opened one can, poured it into glasses and handed one to Evelyn. "Come on, tonight you're allowed to get drunk."
Evelyn took the beer, forced a bitter smile, and said, "How can I get drunk with this?"
Vivian looked at her smile, feeling extremely uncomfortable. She was always like this, no matter what, she would never easily reveal her vulnerable side, even to her childhood best friend. At this moment, Vivian really didn't want to see her smiling like this anymore. "Can't you stop doing this? When you're sad, just cry. After crying, we can start over. Isn't that better? Why do you always make things difficult for yourself? When will you stop doing this? I really hate seeing you smile like this!"
After hearing Vivian's words, Evelyn couldn't hold back her tears anymore. "I don't want to either, but..."
"Stop talking. I don't care what you're going through. Just cry it out tonight, cry comfortably. Okay? I know I was wrong. I shouldn't have encouraged you to ignore everything. If it's not the right person, you shouldn't insist like this. I was wrong." Vivian quickly apologized.
Evelyn looked at Vivian, who was crying even more fiercely than herself, and suddenly didn't feel as upset anymore. At least no matter what happens, the person sitting across from her will still be there, always there. She never doubted this.
"Alright! It's not a big deal. Don't cry anymore." Evelyn turned the tables and comforted Vivian, "Shut up!"
This scolding finally made Vivian quiet down a bit. She looked at Evelyn, who also had tear streaks on her face, and silently wiped her tears.
Evelyn raised the beer in front of her and said, "Come on, let's drink!" She clinked the beer glasses forcefully and exclaimed, "Cheers!"
Both of them finished all the beers they had bought and looked at the empty cans on the table. Now they couldn't cry anymore. Vivian and Evelyn were both quite tipsy, it was the first time they had drunk so much. They slid off their chairs and sat under the table, talking to themselves.
"Don't be sad, there's nothing we can't get through, right? Everything will be fine..." Vivian's eyes were blurred.
"Why did I believe him? Why did I trust him like that? If I had seen everything clearly from the beginning, would I still end up like this?" Evelyn stared blankly at the ceiling.
The scene was quite comical. The two of them were actually cuddling under the table and stayed there for the whole night. The next morning, Evelyn woke up, rubbing her throbbing temples. She got up from the table and completely ignored Vivian still under the table. She rushed into the bathroom and had a bout of vomiting.
What a painful morning after a hangover.
Étienne was saved by Leo and brought back to the Chevalier family's mansion, where lights were on throughout the night. Several doctors were sweating profoundly, and Jason ordered everyone to find the best doctors to save his son.
For a while, the atmosphere in the Chevalier family became extremely tense.
"Don't worry, he will be fine," Étienne's mother, Sidney, comforted Jason.
Jason didn't say anything, he just wearily pressed his hand against his temples. After a moment, in great distress, he said, "I shouldn't have called him back from the United States. It's all my fault."
"It's not your fault, Étienne won't blame you. Don't be like this," Sidney reassured him.
The doctor came forward and said, "Mr. Chevalier's shrapnel has been removed, but the situation is still critical. Everything depends on him now, as long as he wakes up, he'll be fine."
Jason exploded, "What do you mean by saying that? Are you implying that my son won't wake up?"
The doctor was sweating even more profusely, and he quickly responded, "No, no, that's not what I meant..."
Sidney immediately stepped forward and held onto Jason, "Don't get worked up, stay calm. The doctor didn't mean it that way. Everything will be fine now that the shrapnel is removed." Then she turned to the doctor and said, "You don't need to be here anymore, thank you!"
The trembling doctor retreated.
Sidney was an elegant woman. She loved Jason and disregarded everyone's opposition, enduring many hardships and efforts for this relationship. But it was only after marrying him that she realized being the mistress of the Chevalier family was not an easy job.
She had to accept everything, and it was no longer just about love. Problems couldn't be solved by sacrificing oneself for the sake of love. Perhaps it was because...
"Time gradually diluted this feeling, perhaps because I no longer have the courage I had before. Now, Sidney is just a qualified housewife, and everything else doesn't matter."
Jason asked Sidney, "Is she the girl he was with for six years?"
Sidney naturally knew who he was talking about and replied, "Yes, it's her."
"What's her name?" Jason felt defeated by his son. He thought everything from back then was already in the past, but he didn't expect Menier to bring this woman, resulting in everything turning out like this. He truly made a mistake.
"Sophie."
"If the child wakes up, let him go. I suddenly realized that I have done many things wrong." Sidney didn't expect that just this unexpected incident would make the man in front of her so sad and reflective of his past actions. Was he still the proud man she knew?
Sidney still held a grudge in her heart. This child was not her own, no matter how much she pretended to be his mother. He was never her biological child. And the woman who gave birth to him, starting from the moment of her passing, was destined to be Sidney's lifelong rival, an unshakeable rival.
Nothing is more cherished and missed than what we cannot have. So, Sidney always understood that a living person can never replace a deceased one.
Jason turned to Sidney and asked, "What's wrong with you? What are you thinking?"
Sidney looked down at him, gave him a smile, and said, "Nothing. I'll go check on him."
Etienne still lay in bed, unconscious, with a peaceful sleeping face. Sidney stood by the bed and had an evil thought: What if he never wakes up? Would everything be better than it is now?
Sidney couldn't help but twist her mouth, revealing a sinister smile.
But Sidney knew she wouldn't do such a thing. Jason would never give her that opportunity. Suddenly, Jason's voice came from behind her, "Let him rest."
Sidney turned around and hid her thoughts, holding Jason's arm and nodding in agreement.
They both left the room together. This is family, this is her husband. Sidney told herself in her heart that no matter what she does in the future, she will not betray them.
Etienne remained unconscious for three days. When he woke up and saw someone holding his hand by the bed, he was momentarily dazed and thought it was Evelyn. But as soon as the person spoke, he knew his dream had shattered.
Sophie had been by his bedside all the time. Seeing him wake up, she hurriedly called for the doctor, "You're finally awake." Overwhelmed with excitement, tears streamed down her face.
But at that moment, Etienne realized that when love is truly gone, it's hard to feel anything else. Seeing her tears, he couldn't be moved as before. His heart was filled with profound disappointment.
Sophie looked at his expression and also understood. Could they really not go back to how things were before? Now that Etienne's father finally accepted their relationship, but Etienne...
Has Ne changed? When Sophie saw Étienne standing upstairs, her heart naturally leaped with joy. She thought that their past feelings hadn't changed at all, but when Étienne took a bullet for that woman; it felt as if Sophie's heart was shot out of nowhere.
Étienne suddenly thought of Evelyn. He didn't know how she was doing now. That shot back then was really unavoidable, but he didn't expect that they would still drag the unconscious Evelyn out. He had blocked that bullet himself. If he hadn't, he knew she wouldn't have survived.
Evelyn must have already returned to her country. With her personality, she definitely has gone back. Étienne had only one thought at the moment, which was to quickly go back and find her. He must find her, otherwise, there would be no chance for any of this.
Struggling, Étienne shouted Leo's name. Seeing Jason and Sidney entering the room, he sat up and said, "I want to go to the U.S."
Jason looked at him. "Are you crazy? Do you know that bullet almost took your life? Rest properly now, don't even think about it! Why do you want to go to the U.S. now?"
Étienne ignored Jason and just pulled himself up, removing the IV on his hand. The others tried to stop him, but Étienne whispered, "Get out of my way!"
Jason looked at his son, who displayed such determination. "Do you want to die? Menier didn't kill you with one shot, so you want to find death like this?"
Étienne glanced at the man standing in front of him. "If you still recognize me as your son, then I say, I want to go to the U.S.!"
Jason was furious. "You dare to threaten me using our father-son relationship? What exactly are you planning to do?"
Leo stepped forward at this moment and held onto Étienne. The doctor quickly approached and stopped the bleeding from his right hand, which was flowing profusely. Jason looked at his son, gradually calming down, still finding it hard to believe. "How could you hurt my heart like this?"
"Hurt your heart? You're talking to me about hurting your heart? Haha... what a joke!" Étienne laughed bitterly. Even after all these years, he still hadn't truly let go of his mother's passing. He found it hard to believe that the person in front of him could still claim that their heart was hurt by him at this moment.
Jason looked at the anguish in Étienne's eyes, suddenly feeling weak. He could only weakly support himself with the table, feeling extremely sad. This was his own flesh and blood. He thought that he had forgotten everything from back then, but he didn't expect that after all these years, it was still vivid in his heart.
Étienne turned to Leo and said, "Take me to the airport."
Leo hesitated, looking at Jason, who sighed and said, "Let him go."
