Chapter 80 He Has Become a Memory

The night was dark, but the streets were still brightly lit. Perhaps all bustling cities had a common weakness- the absence of pure darkness. Evelynn didn't drive when she left in the morning, and now it was a little late in the evening. She didn't want to disturb Antonio, so she went downstairs and hailed a cab instead.

The driver in the car was a young guy who seemed very interested in games. The radio was playing game-related content, and in the end, it stopped on a channel where a soothing voice introduced a game. The radio host mentioned the game's development company with respect and admiration. Evelyn caught a name and couldn't calm her mind afterward. Coincidentally, they were passing by the city's tallest building, which was still illuminated with neon lights. It made her wonder how busy the people inside must be.

And that person was probably among them. The driver saw Evelyn gazing at the building through the rearview mirror. "Just now on the radio, they mentioned Étienne. He works there, you know. He's like an idol. People who make games with passion can easily acquire wealth too."

Evelyn didn't know how to respond, so she just smiled. The driver became even more excited. "Ah, you know who I'm talking about? Then you must be a fan! It's amazing!"

"Oh, you're Evelyn? Oh my goodness! Wow! You're even more beautiful in person!"

Evelyn could only respond with a smile. She stopped at the entrance of the community and paid the person. Then, she turned around to go to Vivian's place to pick up Luis.

So, he had already built his gaming company to such an impressive extent. Well, he was always a capable person. It was a pity that he had experienced a setback, but what could bring him down like that? The thought made her chuckle.

She couldn't dwell on it anymore. She felt like she was going crazy.

When Evelyn arrived at Vivian's house, Vivian eagerly opened the door and said, "Evelyn, your son is already asleep. How do you want to handle this? Will you carry him back yourself? It's too late. If you want, you can sleep here, and I can take him to school tomorrow. What do you think?"

Evelyn glanced at Luis, who was sleeping soundly, and nodded at Vivian.

"Well then, I'll go back now. I'll come to pick him up tomorrow morning."

"Alright, it's too dark outside. Let me walk you out."

"You're pregnant. I'm afraid someone might attack me." Evelyn made a random joke.

"In that case, be careful on the way." Vivian stood by the door and watched her enter the elevator.

Evelyn strolled back home at a leisurely pace. There was still some light in the community, and it wasn't too dark. It felt good to have this kind of tranquility. Her mind was in a mess, and she still thought about the encounter with Étienne, that dinner, and the collision. For Evelyn, it was truly unforgettable.

Anyway, she would continue to live aimlessly. But deep down, she knew that things wouldn't just end that easily. She had an incredibly strong premonition.

A few days later, Antonio handed Evelyn the script for a new play. "The character in this script is very likable. Just focus on your acting, and leave the rest to us."

Antonio didn't say much, and Evelyn didn't think much of it. It was the few additional sentences that seemed suspicious. She asked, "What's wrong? Is something going on?"

Antonio hesitated for a moment, then decided to be honest with Evelyn. "Well, it's not a big deal. The funding is all in place now, but the director suddenly backed out. It's causing some difficulties, but finding a new director shouldn't be a problem. Don't worry."

Evelyn felt that things weren't as simple as they seemed, but she couldn't guess what the problem was. "Is it really that simple? You seem quite troubled. Tell me the truth."

"The truth is... my sister was conned."

It turned out that everything was ready, but the movie unexpectedly failed the censorship, causing the whole project to be shelved. However, all the money had already been spent, and this time the regulations were very strict. The script was normal, so it was obvious that someone had sabotaged them. Now, the director had backed out, and they were even planning to sue Matinal Company. The situation on the set was chaotic.

Madelyn was already at her wit's end.

Antonio has been helping her with these matters lately, but with little success. It seems the situation isn't very good, and the most crucial issue is that the company's investments have encountered some problems. It's hard to believe it's just a coincidence.

Evelyn looked at Antonio and asked him seriously, "Have you found out who's behind all this?"

Antonio hesitated and felt somewhat reluctant. However, Evelyn understood everything. After a brief pause, she said, "Is it because of me?"

"Don't overthink it. It shouldn't be." Antonio tried to reassure Evelyn.

Evelyn never expected Étienne to harbor such hatred toward her, resorting to such despicable means for revenge. The bitterness in her heart kept spreading, and memories from the past began to replay.

She remembered each expression of concern and every word he spoke. It was stored deep in the recesses of her heart. Now, looking back, they all seemed like jokes.

Back then, he held her hand with utmost care, as if cradling a precious gem in his palm. The corners of his eyes and lips were filled with sweet affection.

He said, "I fell in love with you when I witnessed your stubbornness. You worked so hard, wearing those heavy clothes even in the scorching heat, tirelessly handing out flyers to everyone, including me."

Lost in her thoughts, Evelyn's tears started flowing.

How could she have been so easily deceived by his smooth talk?

Perhaps it was because she wasn't strong enough back then. She was not brave enough to be invincible. She yearned for the warmth of an embrace.

He made a great effort to be by her side, accompanying her through tears and laughter, witnessing her transformation from a high and mighty supermodel to a gentle and lovely lover.

He must have secretly reveled in it, laughing at her innocence, laughing at her foolishness.

Étienne once said, "You're such a determined person. So when you're with me, you'll fight tooth and nail to stay by my side, right?"

Evelyn assured him. "Yes, I will. I will work tirelessly, put in all my effort, and stay with you, no matter what." She said it, and she meant it.

But Étienne ultimately gave up on her.

Evelyn lifted the corners of her lips, tilting her eyes to prevent the tears from falling.

Perhaps all men are heartless like this. What they can't have is precious, but once they obtain it, they fail to cherish it. They let her cry, they let her make a scene, and they won't pay attention anymore.

The higher you are lifted up, the harder you fall.

It is really laughable. She thought Sophie was his true love, but look at how people around him came and went. What does she mean to him?

She recalled that bone-chilling night, when she hugged herself, collapsed in the cold living room, and cried until she couldn't shed a single tear. It was so cold, so bitter.

Meanwhile, Madelyn also felt extremely unsettled. She worked hard for this new movie, but the betrayal left her feeling utterly helpless.

She made arrangements to have dinner with some friends from relevant departments, but they all declined. It seemed like someone was pressuring them or someone had spent a lot of money.

After multiple inquiries, Madelyn finally learned that it was WE Company behind all this, and it was because of Evelyn.

The directors had good relationships on normal days, but recently they seemed to have a lot of film appointments. Even if they didn't have any, they kept declining, saying, "We rarely see each other. Can't you let go of work for once? It's no fun talking about these things during private gatherings."

Madelyn understood their intent. But when in need, one must be humble. "That's right. It's my oversight!"

"Alright, alright. I've always heard that you are generous and broad-minded, and today I see that the rumors are true! Here, let's have a drink!" As he spoke, the middle-aged man raised his glass, gesturing for Madelyn to do the same.

Madelyn was already accustomed to these dinner gatherings. These people were simply using work as an excuse to oppress others. She didn't understand what was so meaningful about these situations; they were simply vulgar and tasteless.

Madelyn stood up calmly. "Of course, I will drink the wine, but after all, I am a woman. I will only drink half of it, alright?" She then poured the wine into the lobster in front of her.

Today, Madelyn's assistant specifically reminded her that this gentleman didn't have any particular preferences; he just liked lobster. And today, in order to cater to his tastes, they chose the best seafood restaurant in the city. Madelyn calmly destroyed his favorite dish, leaving him stunned for a moment.

But after the meal, Madelyn did drink some wine. Although she had trained herself well over the years, tonight she seemed particularly prone to getting drunk. She had just found out about Morgan's condition, and now by getting a bit drunk, she could finally let go of her worries.

Madelyn secretly investigated Morgan's situation over the years and contacted his therapist. The truths she learned were truly shocking. It had already been so long. She even felt some regret in her heart. If it wasn't for her one-sided infatuation back then, her father wouldn't have resorted to such despicable means to force Morgan.

Perhaps his depression was largely caused by her own actions. She claimed to love Morgan, but did she really make an effort to understand him? Did she genuinely care for him from the bottom of her heart? Madelyn felt deeply remorseful.

The assistant looked at Madelyn, who was unusually silent today. Her mood seemed particularly bad.
