Chapter 63 His Arrival
"Alright, I understand," Evelyn interrupted her hurriedly. There are some things that can be ignored stubbornly until one knows about them. Knowing about them often leads to unnecessary worry. Evelyn just wanted to live her life peacefully now. Maybe when she truly let go, she could face everything calmly.
Vivian nodded. "Conroy? Why don't you choose an English name?"
"We'll talk about it later."
"So, you're not planning to return to our home country?"
"Who knows what the future holds? I definitely don't want to go back now. It's good here, and I need to sort out everything for myself. If I were to go back, I would need a lot of courage, which I don't have right now."
"I understand. I won't ask you this question again. Just live your life well, and if you want to come back, I'll be here for you."
Evelyn nodded and looked at Vivian. Then she thought of Charles going out to buy things. She asked her, "How does it feel to be married?" Seeing Charles's expression toward Vivian, Evelyn could tell that the two of them were doing well, which gave her some peace of mind.
"It's alright," Vivian replied, but then she complained about Lena's situation. They talked back and forth for a long time. When Charles finally came back, the four of them went out to have dinner.
Ray left a good impression on Vivian. He was a considerate and steady man. No matter what reason Evelyn had for making this decision, Vivian supported her unconditionally.
That evening, Charles and Vivian stayed in a hotel near Evelyn's apartment. Vivian snuggled in Charles's arms, watching TV, while Charles played with his phone. Vivian chattered on about something, and Charles listened half-heartedly, occasionally responding to her to maintain harmony.
"I feel bad for Evelyn. I really want to give Étienne a beating. I really hate him!"
"Because he broke up with Evelyn?"
"Broke up? He clearly bullied Evelyn! Now Evelyn is alone with the child. Oh, by the way, if, if, if I had been pregnant at that time, would you have left me too and let me raise the child alone?"
Charles was used to Vivian's scattered way of talking. He had long stopped finding it strange. "No, I wouldn't."
"Really?"
"With your intelligence, that would be very unfortunate for the child," Charles joked.
Vivian realized Charles was indirectly calling her dumb. She raised her hand to hit him. "You—"
"That's why I can be of use, right? Otherwise, what would you want me to do?"
Vivian was unsure of Charles's tactics, but then she realized he just couldn't speak properly, even though he seemed good at it! Well, they would just continue to live like this.
After packing her luggage, Evelyn wanted to go out and buy some things. As she opened the door, she saw a man opposite her staring at her. He was probably a local in his early thirties. After closing the door, she noticed that the man was still standing there, looking at her, so she nodded as a form of greeting. Later, they met again at the supermarket. The man seemed hesitant for a moment before coming over to say hello. He spoke typical Australian-style French and told her his name was Ray. He asked Evelyn what her name was and whether she was Canadian or French.
"Evelyn, French." Evelyn smiled and answered his questions. That was how they got to know each other. In the following days, Evelyn didn't go out much, so they didn't meet again.
This was a relatively old building, and sometimes there were electrical problems. On this day, the whole room lost power. Since she was alone, Evelyn felt a bit scared. She sat on the stairs and tried calling the landlord, but there was no answer.
The man from across the hall came up the stairs. Evelyn had forgotten about him. She stood up and let him pass. However, Ray stopped in front of Evelyn. "Hello, Evelyn. There's a power outage in your room."
"What can I help you with?" It then occurred to her that she had seen this man before, and after thinking for a moment, she remembered his name was Ray.
Evelyn pondered for a while, and despite her concerns, she told him, "The power in my house has been cut off, and I don't know the reason. I can't reach the landlord either."
Ray walked toward his apartment and said to her with a smile, "The electrical circuits here are severely outdated and often problematic. Let me go get my tools."
Grateful, Evelyn nodded and waited by the door without saying another word. Ray brought his toolbox and quickly resolved the issue. Evelyn thanked him repeatedly and sent him off to the door.
After that, they began to run into each other more frequently. Evelyn would go downstairs in the afternoon when the sunlight wasn't too strong, and she would often meet Ray when he was taking out the trash or buying things. At first, they would merely exchange nods, but later on, they would take walks together.
Of course, Evelyn understood that no one would be so kind to a woman without reason. Eventually, Evelyn took the initiative to tell him about her situation. "I'm pregnant," she said, touching her belly, which was gradually becoming noticeable.
She had intended to scare Ray away with this, but instead, he said, "I'm actually good at cooking. You're the most malnourished pregnant woman I've ever seen. As a neighbor, can I take care of you and your baby?" His sincerity was undeniable.
Feeling somewhat helpless and unsure of what to do, Ray continued, "You've always been alone, and I have no ulterior motives. I just want to take care of you." Pausing for a moment, he added, "Tomorrow, I have a gathering with my friends, and they'll all bring their partners. If you feel uncomfortable accepting my goodwill for no reason, could you pretend to be my girlfriend?"
The reason he gave was indeed weak. However, Evelyn still agreed. "I can't stay up late, and I can't drink. Would that be alright?" On one hand, she wanted someone to look after her, and on the other hand, Ray's genuine nature reminded her of someone.
Evelyn felt like she had suddenly become despicable, but what else could she do? She truly felt powerless and in dire need of someone to rely on. Surprisingly, Ray seemed very happy. From then on, Evelyn accompanied him in dealing with his friends and attended her prenatal check-ups with Ray.
One day, she asked him, "Why are you helping me?" Ray looked at her, momentarily lost in thought. Evelyn was a calm and beautiful person, always so serene. Even though she was radiant, she possessed a stillness that Ray hadn't seen in any other girls he had encountered. It was very captivating.
"There is no particular reason. Don't burden yourself. We're friends," he said. These words made Evelyn feel much better, as she no longer had to overthink things.
Then, one day, Ray said to her, "Being an unwed mother can be inconvenient. I'm part of the 'non-marriage' group, but if you need a marriage, I can help you." Evelyn looked at him in astonishment. How could he simplify marriage like that? Ray continued, "For the sake of your child."
