Chapter 54 What More Do You Want?
After entering, Evelyn found a quiet corner, hoping to endure it. But some people just wouldn't let her off easily, especially Jack. Seeing Evelyn, he immediately sat next to her and said, "Miss Bennett."
Evelyn turned her head, completely ignoring his disgusting face.
Jack persisted and got closer, his hands becoming restless. Evelyn stood up and moved to the other side.
Holding a glass of red wine, Jack followed, saying, "Miss Bennett, have a drink. Since you're here."
After saying that, he placed the glass in front of her. Evelyn knew this was an important cooperation for the company; otherwise, Étienne wouldn't be sitting here. She endured and endured, clenching and releasing her fists, forcing a smile. "I haven't been feeling well recently, so I can't drink."
Evelyn thought of standing up again to avoid Jack, but he wouldn't let her. Antonio pulled Evelyn away and took her seat, grabbing the glass of wine from Jack's hand. "Good evening!"
Ignoring Antonio completely, Jack pushed him away with disgust. Antonio stood strong, his gaze turning icy, provoking Jack. "Who do you think you are? Get out of my way!"
The commotion had already attracted the attention of the people around them. Evelyn pulled away from Antonio, shaking her head to gesture for him to step aside. She wanted to handle it herself.
Antonio sat on the side, and Jack approached with an air of self-importance. "What's it to you if Miss Bennett and I have a drink?"
Evelyn was furious. She had been looked down upon before, but she would never allow anyone to disrespect her friend.
She walked over, took the glass from Jack's hand, and amidst the ongoing noise, she stood up and poured every drop of the red liquid onto Jack's head. It ran down his cheeks, staining his shirt crimson. Everyone stopped and stared as Evelyn spoke clearly and distinctly, "Who do you think you are?"
Jack had never been humiliated like this before. He stood up and slapped her, catching Antonio off guard. By the time he held Jack back, it was too late. Antonio retaliated with a punch, and unable to quell his anger, landed a few kicks. Jack tumbled onto the couch, screaming in pain.
Evelyn felt weak and helpless on the side, and no one approached. Antonio had released his anger and helped Evelyn up, whispering softly in her ear, "Let's go back. It's over now."
Evelyn thought she might shed some tears, but in reality, she didn't shed a single one. Evelyn knew very clearly that from the moment she entered to the moment she left, Étienne saw everything and never once intervened. In this moment, her heart felt truly cold.
Reached the bottom of the valley.
A terrifying thought had taken root in Evelyn's mind, perhaps this was all arranged by him.
Unable to cry anymore, Evelyn felt like she had run out of tears. Standing at the door, wrapped in Antonio's coat, Evelyn shivered from the cold. It was already April, why was it still so cold?
Feeling someone standing behind her, Evelyn turned around and looked at Étienne. At this moment, she hated him. Taking out the hospital examination report from her bag, she directly threw it at him, "Are you satisfied now? I'm pregnant! What else do you want?"
Antonio's car stopped in front of her, without any hesitation, she got in the car. She didn't look back at him.
Étienne picked up the examination report on the ground in a daze. All he could think about was Evelyn's words, "I'm pregnant." He couldn't believe it, was Evelyn carrying his child?
Étienne hesitated all night, whether he should approach or not. He was afraid of hearing Evelyn rejecting him again. He felt Jack's slap as if it was on his own face. Étienne, admit it, you love her, truly love her, there's no way to pretend nothing happened.
Holding the examination report, Étienne suddenly understood. If he loved her so much that he couldn't let go, why let her go? He was now more certain; he absolutely couldn't do that.
Evelyn stayed at Vivian's house for three whole days, her face wounds were no longer visible. Every night, she had the same nightmare, with many people pointing at her, asking numerous questions that she couldn't answer, and all she could do was cry. When she woke up, her pillow was still damp.
She suddenly felt like a fish out of water, unable to breathe, she was forgetting how to breathe.
Vivian came home from work, turned on the living room light, and saw Evelyn sitting on the couch, her face pale, not shedding a tear, but bitterness filled her features.
Vivian sat next to her and hugged her, "I know, Evelyn, it's too painful for you. It's okay, you can leave, no one will blame you. How about going to Melbourne? It's beautiful there, you'll love it. Let's go, let's go, hm?"
After a while, Evelyn nodded. She really wanted to leave, anywhere would do, as long as she could get away from here.
Early the next morning, Vivian took a day off and accompanied Evelyn to pack her luggage. As soon as the car parked, they saw someone standing at Evelyn's doorstep. Vivian tried to block but it was too late, Evelyn looked at that person without any emotion and got into the car by herself. Vivian couldn't rest assured and followed along.
Étienne saw Evelyn and hugged her tightly, "Evelyn, where were you going? I've been waiting for you!"
Evelyn pushed him away with all her strength, "I don't want to see you."
Étienne had looked for her for three days, only to wait...
When it came to her, he would never give up easily. "Evelyn, it's all my fault. Don't be like this. We have a child now, don't be angry. It's all my fault."
Vivian couldn't hold back and rushed forward, "Evelyn doesn't want to talk to you!"
Evelyn handed the key to Vivian, saying, "Go back to the room and wait for me. Hurry, go upstairs!"
After Vivian left, Evelyn clenched her fists and told herself that it was time to make a decision.
Étienne stood in front of Evelyn. "We have a child? I'm going to be a father!"
"What? Just because we have a child, does that mean we have to get back together? Or are you planning to abandon me after I give birth?" Evelyn asked coldly.
"Evelyn, what are you saying? How could you think like this? This is our child," Étienne looked at the frail figure in front of him.
"Our child? And then how am I supposed to tell him? You were an accident when Dad and Mom had you. You shouldn't have come into this world. What do you want me to say?" Evelyn was on the verge of a breakdown.
"Don't be like this, Evelyn. This is my child! I want you to give birth to it. I'm begging you!" Étienne pleaded.
Evelyn closed her eyes in pain and, when she opened them again, she looked coldly at Étienne. "Joke? What makes you think I would give birth to this child? Dream on!"
"What do you mean?" Étienne tried hard to understand the meaning behind Evelyn's words. He looked at her coldly standing in front of him and suddenly understood something. He reached out and grabbed her shoulder. "What did you do to our child?"
Evelyn thought Étienne would at least believe her on this matter, but she hadn't expected him to ask her without hesitation. So, she answered coldly, "I got rid of it." Evelyn looked at him.
Étienne looked at Evelyn and for a moment, he didn't know what to say. Finally, he weakly lowered his hand from Evelyn's shoulder. "You will regret this." That was all he said before leaving. Evelyn stood still, her heart already numb, not feeling pain anymore, not knowing what could hurt her anymore.
Evelyn placed her hand on her stomach, gently touching it. It's good, at least I still have you. At least you'll be by my side. Things seemed not so bad for Evelyn anymore.
Vivian looked at the lost Evelyn, her eyes instantly turning red. Did William really leave just like that? There's still his child in Evelyn's stomach, and he just abandoned her like this? It's hard to believe.
Evelyn packed up her belongings and headed to the airport with her suitcase. She had already prepared the plane ticket and everything last night. Vivian insisted on sending Evelyn to the airport, and Evelyn couldn't refuse. But seeing her crying uncontrollably, she called Charles. She was afraid Vivian would faint at the airport.
Evelyn sat quietly in the back seat, looking out the window.
The scenery behind me, I initially thought that leaving in such a hurry would leave me with many things I couldn't let go of. But now, at this moment, I find myself not knowing who to bid farewell to.
Vivian was sobbing, her voice choked, "Evelyn, why do I feel so miserable? When I went abroad to study, you sent me off at the airport, and I could still happily wave goodbye to you. But why, now that it's your turn to leave, I feel this way!"
Evelyn felt extremely helpless. She wasn't that sad initially, so why did she feel a tinge of tears when she saw Vivian crying? "Alright, whenever you have free time, come and visit me, okay?"
At the airport, everything was just right. Vivian clung desperately to Evelyn and refused to let go. "Evelyn, you're really leaving just like that. It's so hard for me to accept!"
"You make it sound like I'm going to die. It's scaring me," Evelyn pretended to be light-hearted.
"Why are you joking like this?" Vivian said, angry.
"Fine, I promise. I'll tell Antonio after I've boarded the plane. No matter where I go, don't tell anyone if they ask, okay?" Evelyn held Vivian tightly.
Vivian could only nod. "I don't want you to leave!"
Evelyn pushed Vivian away. In the end, the one who truly cared for her was this little silly girl. "Stop being silly."
Vivian said, "Then why don't I go with you? Is that okay? After all, I've spent many years there too. If I go with you, it'll be fine."
Evelyn pointed to Charles, who was being surrounded by a group of people not far away. "And what about him? Look, you're not even here for a moment, and he's already surrounded by a bunch of people. If you leave with me, what about him?!"
With tears in her eyes, Vivian shook her head. "I only want you. I don't care about him!"
Evelyn gave Vivian one last hug and whispered in her ear, "Having you say that is enough for me."
Finally, Evelyn walked away slowly, while Vivian remained crouching on the ground, tears flowing uncontrollably. Charles saw Evelyn leaving and finally felt a hint of guilt. He pushed through the crowd, walked to Vivian's side, pulled her up from the ground, and embraced her, covering her face, before taking her into the car.
Evelyn watched their figures and felt a sense of beauty. She gently touched her belly, where a little life was growing. At nearly four months, there was still something to hold on to. Evelyn felt that she wasn't insignificant. She thought about how she would bravely face tomorrow, saying she was willing. Willing to work hard, willing to regain her composure.
