Chapter hundred and fifty

Chapter 150

Dallas

“I don't understand what's happening here. Why do you both look so pale? He tried to kill us. He deserved it. Why are you looking at her as if she did something wrong?” I asked when I could no longer take the silence.

Jenna had gone very, very pale as she continued to stare at Ron's unmoving body. It was almost like she sas expecting him to come back to life. She didn't believe he was dead by how tightly she clutched her gun.

I didn't believe it either. This man had ruined my life so thoroughly while remaining in the shadow. He had orchestrated my mother's death and god-knows how many other people's death. Yet he looked so vulnerable in death. He looked so ordinary.

One bullet had put him down. Just one. He'd ruined our lives and it only took a bullet. It seem so easy that it was unbelievable.

“Will you please explain this to me?” I asked, more persistent.

Oliver pulled me closer to himself and explained everything. He told me what Jenna wanted in return for saving me.

Jenna had wanted to leave the Brothers just like Oliver's father had. Oliver was supposed to make sure Ron died by his hand because she couldn't kill him. If she did, then she would be the new leader.

But now that she shot the bullet that killed him, the mantle of leadership would be pass over.

“Ron said she was his heir and she already earned her leadership. If it only works by the leader's death, then what does he mean by that?” I asked.

Oliver and Ethan exchanged looks but didn't give me a response. It was clear they didn't know the answer.

Jenna seem to be in shock. She didn't even flinch till Oliver finished narrating the tale.

“Guys, we really need to go now. The van is close by. This route leads to the road faster than where you came from.” Ethan said with urgency.

Oliver seem to remember his cousin's presence. He turned to him, his face tight,

“Xavier?” He asked, his whole body tensed beside me.

“Alive. He's injured but not badly. He's in the van.” Ethan answered.

Oliver released a sigh of relief. My eyes went to Jenna still standing over our father's corpse. I walked out of Oliver's embrace towards her.

She didn't even here me approaching. I gave her shoulder a small squeeze causing her to flinch slightly. She whirled towards me, immediately assuming a fighting stance. But her posture eased as recognition dawned on her.

“We need to leave.” I said to her.

I didn't know whether to comfort her or grieve with her. We had just murdered our father. And while he deserved it, it didn't feel entirely right.

I'd barely known him, but he was still my father. Jenna had known him her entire life. I wondered what she must be going through.

Was she relieved that she had finally killed the man who has possibly terrorized her her entire life? Or was she questioning her actions and regretting it?

I knew she already made up her mind to have him killed tonight, but thinking about something wasn't the same as actually doing it.

Jenna stared at me for a few long seconds before shaking her head slightly.

“I can't leave now.” She said slowly, almost sadly.

“Why can't you?” I asked in confusion.

Her eyes fell back to Ron's body, the sadness in her face slowly morphed to anger. Anger because now she had the responsibility she never wanted.

I didn't know why but in that moment I wanted to make her feel better. Technically, she had gotten into that position because she was saving me.

If I had just killed Ron when I was busy stabbing him earlier, she wouldn't be in this position. But I couldn't do it. I tried to go for his heart but I couldn't do it.

Despite every horrible thing he had done to me and everyone I loved, I couldn't bring myself to take the killing blow. The thought of killing him wasn't as exhilarating as I thought it would be.

I swallowed past the lump in my throat. I hated him more now. I'd hated him for twenty years because I thought he left me. Now I hated him for coming back into my life.

Because if he hadn't, I would have happily thought Lucien killed my mother and I would let it go. I wouldn't have to be conflicted because I didn't kill him. And most importantly, I wouldn't have thrust Jenna into this situation.

“If we leave him here and go, no one would know you killed him. You can use the opportunity to escape. When his body is found, they would just assumed he got caught in the crossfire. No one would bother to look into his death as they would be too busy trying to find a new leader.” I said softly.

It was the only kind of comfort I could give her. If no one knew she did it, she could still go on with her initial plan.

She lifted her eyes to me and smiled. I saw the heavy sadness in the smile and tiny bit of gratitude.

“I can't run away now. They already know.” She said.

I was about to ask her what she meant but she stopped me and motioned for me to listen. I heard several footsteps approaching. It sounded like an entire army was marching towards us.

I knew then that the Brothers were coming. But how had they known about Ron's death so fast?

I didn't get to ponder on the question as Oliver grabbed me suddenly.

“We're leaving.” He said firmly, but I could sense the panic in his voice.

Jenna tried to move but let out a wince. I had forgotten about her injured leg. The shock seem to numb the pain for the few minutes that followed Ron's death, but it was still there.

Even if she managed to shift her weight on her good leg, she wouldn't be able to get far with that much people coming. I didn't know what they would do when they find her.

If they would fall to their knees because she's their leader now, or attempt to kill her because she had turned on them and killed many of their own. They'd all witnessed her rescuing me. I don't know how this cult group worked but I didn't want to find out.

She looked up to me and I immediately knew what she was about to say.

“Don't even think about it.” I said sternly.

She winced slightly. I wasn't sure if it was because of my harsh tone or her injury. I wasn't going to leave her behind. I wouldn't do that even if she was my worst enemy.

Ethan trudged forward.
“I've got her. You guys should go. We'll follow behind.” he said.

But I didn't move. I kept my eyes on him as he gathered her in his arms. For a minute, it seem like she was going to protest, but she realized she didn't have any other option. It didn't stop her from glaring at Ethan though. He ignored her.

After they ventured into the woods away from the incoming Brothers, Oliver and I followed after them. We hadn't taken more than a few steps before he swept me of my feet.

“I can walk.” I argued.

“You can't. I see the limp you're trying your best to hide.” He said and walked after his cousin.

“It's not that bad.” I muttered, my mind wandering back to Jenna's injured legs.

I've had a lot of surprises these past few days, but the biggest of them had been what happened tonight. She had shoved me to the floor and took that bullet for me. There was no hesitation on her face. She seem to have done it based on pure instincts.

I couldn't stop wondering why she would do that. She's never acted like she liked me since the first time we met. So why would she do something like that?

“It's bad to me.” I heard Oliver mutter, his voice dragging me away from my thoughts.

I didn't say anything again. I couldn't argue with him. I just smiled and leaned closer to him.

Despite my weight in his arms, he still managed to walk very fast. It wasn't long before I caught sight of a black van. It was parked under a tree, hidden well by the think cover of darkness. If we weren't already close, I wouldn't have seen it.

Ethan and Jenna had already gotten to the van. He set her inside and rushed to the driver's side.

“Hurry,” he yelled at Oliver.

We soon reached the van too. Ethan sped off immediately.

When we had gotten far way from the building, the exhaustion finally weighed on me. The adrenaline had faded causing my body to ache alot. My eyelids fluttered with effort it took for me to keep them open. But I soon lost the battle.

Oliver's concerned face was the last thing I saw before drifting away.
