CHAPTER FIFTY EIGHT
OLIVER
My heart hammered in my chest as I sped through the Valhalla club’s gate.
She’s okay. She’s okay. She’s okay.
That has been my mantra ever since Heather told me that Dallas had left, but she didn’t tell her where she was going to.
It was already getting dark and she hadn’t returned. I checked the tracking device I secretly installed in her phone while we were in Korea, and found out she was at the Valhalla club.
I kept telling myself that she was safe. It’s not like anyone would lure her here and kill her. It’s impossible for anything to get past the security here. But if the killer is smart enough, it is most definitely possible.
My grip tightened around the steering wheel and I increased my speed. I was already driving past the speed limit, something I had never done in my entire life.
The drive from the gates to the entrance usually lasts ten minutes, but I made it there in five. I spotted Dallas sitting in a corner, hugging her knees.
A strange sense of relief washed over me and I finally released the breath I didn’t even realize I was holding.
She is really okay.
A pang of worry hit me as I noticed the blank stare and her tear-streaked face. It was chilly, but she was only wearing a short sleeve tank top.
I grabbed my jacket and walked towards her. She didn’t notice my presence until I draped the jacket over her. She flinched slightly before turning to me.
“Oliver?” She called, her tone coated with surprise.
I gave her a small smile.
“Are you planning on freezing to death to escape my torture, little monkey?” I said, hoping it’d ease the lines of worry on her forehead.
It did, though it seems she was trying to mask her sadness with a smile.
“It’s the other way round, Mr Kang. I want to turn into a ghost and haunt you in your sleep.” she said, her voice wasn’t very full of its usual humor.
“Thank you for the heads up. I’ll make sure to sprinkle holy water in my room.”
She flashed me a smile but it doesn’t reach her eyes. I wanted to ask her a lot of questions about her current mood. But I knew better than to approach the question directly. Like me, Dallas isn’t used to being an open book. Although, she might argue otherwise, we’re quite similar in some ways.
I sat beside her on the pavement. It was already dark and the corner we were sitting at was hidden. The only people that could see us are the people going through the entrance.
Also, I shielded Dallas with my body in case of any passer-by. She is the current news headline in most blog posts so it wouldn’t be hard to recognize her. It doesn’t matter that I made sure the big blogs removed the post, some people were still sharing it around.
I cleared my throat.
“Heather said you ran out of the house radiating with joy. You don’t look very joyful to me .”
The blank look returned to her face. For a while I thought she wasn’t going to reply me, but she suddenly sighed.
“Atlas said he wouldn’t be coaching me anymore.” she said with sadness in her voice.
My jaws clenched and I grinded my molars so hard I was surprised they didn’t turn to dust. That bastard.
“Oh!” was the only thing I could say. I knew it was for the best, but I should probably not tell her that when she is this heartbroken.
Her gaze flew to me and her brows furrowed.
“You don’t look surprised.”
“I anticipated this. Atlas is a business person, and most business people would react the way he did. What he did was cruel, but he was probably protecting his reputation. You said it yourself that he only had a one-track mind, and wouldn’t allow anything to ruin it.” I explained calmly.
She chuckled, but like her expression, it was also sad.
“Except that wasn’t why he dropped me.” she paused, “he wanted me to quit my job at your place so I can focus fully on fencing, and get to the Olympics.”
I clenched my jaws harder, struggling to keep my anger at bay. I can’t afford to lose my temper. There is too much at stake.
“So you chose to leave him instead,” I said plainly.
I tried not to focus on the tiny swell inside me. I knew the reason she didn’t want to quit working with me was because of her mother, not because of me. But I couldn’t stop the smile that crept on my lips.
“I couldn’t leave you…” she trailed off as our eyes locked.
There were so many unspoken words between us, but surprisingly, the silence was enough. I didn’t want her to complete her sentence, I was more than contented with the phrase.
I stared into her beautiful eyes, lost in the abyss of green.I had always dismissed any thoughts I had towards her that weren’t sexually related. Like how I want to touch her and hold her close to me after giving her an orgasm. How I want her to fall asleep in my arms. How I want her so much that sometimes it’s had to breathe when she isn’t near.
But tonight, I didn’t chase the thoughts away. I let them in. I leaned closer to her, with the intent of kissing her and sealing her fate with me. I didn’t care that we were in public and anyone could see us. I just wanted her.
Suddenly, thunder rumbled, breaking the trance we fell into. She blinked and averted her gaze from me.
“It seems like it’s about to rain. We should leave,” she said and she stood up.
I stood after her and led her to where I parked. She got into the car, I retrieved my phone from my pocket and sent a quick texts to Joe, Ethan, and Xavier.
I was about to get into the car when a text message entered from Joe.
“Your suspicions are right, Mr Kang. He is our man.”
