Chapter seventy six

Oliver

Turns out giving Dallas the space she needed was harder than I thought. It was late in the evening when we got back to the mansion. She went straight into her room, not bothering to eat dinner. Heather went up with her, probably to cheer her up.

Every fibre in my body itched to go after her and console her, but I managed to refrain myself. I was going to give her some space to grief. Even if it costs me my mental health. In the meantime I would focus on doing other things, like finding the old Castillo.

Xavier and Ethan were still in the study when I went up to continue my work. Xavier supposedly had some business talks to discuss with me. That was the main reason he showed up earlier today when he met us trying to set a trap for Lucien and Atlas.

Ethan, on the other hand, was just hanging around to pass time ‘due to the lack of better things to do’. His words.

“You have three other houses in the city you could ‘hang out’ in. You could even crash at your mother's house or any of your hookups. Why does it have to be my house?” I groaned in displeasure.

“Wow, what great hospitality. I'm flattered. And also they're not called hookups, they're just temporary sexual partners.” He scoffed.

“That's literally the definition of a ‘hookup’.” Xavier cut in.

Ethan ignored him and continued,
“Are you saying I'm not welcome to relax in your house?” he arched an eyebrow.

“No, you are not. This is not your house.” I said, not bothering to mask the displeasure in my tone.

He placed a hand on his chest and gasped slightly, feigning hurt.

“Oh my God, that was harsh. I'm hurt. Why are you being so mean, Moonpie?”

I narrowed my gaze on him, a silent warning in my eyes. The asshole grinned widely knowing how much Suzy's nickname annoyed me.

“If I wanted to be mean, I'll have the security throw you out, or I cut both your legs with one good flick of my knife. This is me being nice and hospitable.” I said.

“Yeah yeah, appreciate your kindness, sir, you're such a wonderful host.” He drawled, sarcasm dripping in his tone.

“Go hang at Xavier's house. I'm sure Brenda would love to have you around. She's always been a sweetheart.”

Xavier leveled a glare at me and I threw a smirk at him.

Ethan darted his gaze between us before saying,
“I could do that, but–”

“You are not welcome in my house. Come near my house and what Oliver threatened you with would look like child's play.” Xavier cut in and leveled a glare at Ethan.

Ethan chuckled.
“That right there, is why I can't go to his house. Xavier is a territorial ass. He threatened to gut me out if I go near his fiancee. And I value my life too much to call him bluff.”

He sunk into the couch and drew a long sigh.

“Dear Lord, I need new friends. Preferably the ones who don't threaten me just because I want to hang out with them.”

“Maybe if you were less of an asshole, he'd accept your prayers.” Xavier threw at him.

I shook my head and watched as they exchanged words between each other. You'd think they were recent high school graduates and not two grown men and successful business owners.

I got tired of their argument and strolled to where Ethan was perched on the couch. I shoved my hand into my pocket and brought out the tracking device/recorder.

“Since I'm stuck with you till god-knows-when, you might as well make yourself useful.” I said and dumped the tiny device in his hands.

“Argh! More work! Just when I thought I could lazy around.” He sighed as if it was a big deal, but he was already adjusting his posture and setting his laptop.

As nonchalant as cousin was with his life and basically everything else, he loved his work more than anything. Ethan owns one of the leading security company in the whole country, among other things he does. But he likes to work from behind the scene, like me.

“While we're talking business, Tabitha reached out to me earlier today.” Xavier said.

I shot a look in his direction. Tabitha was still in D.C waiting for the Jason's trial.

“She wasn't able to contact you, so she reached out to me. She assumed we were going to be together since we left D.C together this morning.”

She must have tried to reach me but I had been so busy with Dallas. I hadn't really checked my phone for messages today.

“Is there any problem?” I asked.

“Well, it depends on how you view it. Someone visited Jason in jail and then he attempted to kill himself just few minutes after the person left. He's currently recovering in the hospital. Your assistant said not to worry that she's handled it, she just wanted to inform you.” he replied, his eyes fixed on something on his phone.

Jason attempted suicide? Why would he do that? He'd surely get a few years sentence after the court's ruling, but that shouldn't be enough for him to try to take his life.

Why would he try to kill himself? Unless he's afraid of something. Or someone. But who could he be so afraid of that he would try to kill himself?

His last words before the police took him away flashed across my mind. Jason had said Ronan threatened his daughter's life.

I had already suspected there was more to the contract than seeking partnership. Ronan wants something from me. But I have no idea what that thing is. Or why he wants it so bad. Joe isn't exactly making progress in finding out more about Ronan despite being one of the best private investigators ever. I have to find

There's only one person aside Ronan Russo who might shed some light to the case. The other person who might know more about the deal.

“Looks like it's time to pay the old Castillo a visit.” I sighed.
