Chapter Seventeen: Lurking In The Dark
Jonah's protective nature took over, causing him to move to a position slightly ahead of Amelia in order to shield her from any possible dangers.
Turning and walking into the corner, they caught sight of the scene of the disturbance. Two men were struggling with each other in the center of the alley, one looked like the oppressor. The one who looked like the oppressor was wearing a ragged coat, had trapped the second man against the wall and was yelling in rage.
The man wearing a coat asked angrily and urgently, "Where is my money? You gave me your word that you would have it this evening!"
The second man, a thin person with a pale complexion, battled to free himself. “I already told you that I do not have it! Can I have an extra day, please?"
Jonah and Amelia exchanged a brief glance at each other. This battle was not theirs to fight, yet they could not simply ignore it.
Jonah moved ahead confidently, with a calm and firm voice. "Hey, what's going on? Let him go."
The man wearing a coat spun around, his eyes filled with an untamed and stern expression. "This is not your business. Keep walking.”
Jonah kept his eyes on both men. “We are worried if someone is in danger, let him leave.
The attacker paused, easing his hold on the wiry man. He observed his options while gazing at Jonah and Amelia. In the end, he let out a frustrated grunt, pushed the wiry man away, and ran away.
"Fine," he said angrily. "But I'm not done yet."
He then turned and vanished into the darkness of the alley, leaving the thin man leaning against the wall, struggling to breathe.
Jonah stepped in to assist the man, extending a helping hand. "Is everything alright with you?”
Amelia's heart leaped, and she hurried to his side, kneeling next to him. "Jonah, we need to do something. He's losing an excessive amount of blood."
Jonah nodded, wearing a grim expression. He crouched next to the man, his hands suspended above the injury. “Remain still. I will help you.”
The man was too feeble to fight back, his eyes filled with confusion and fear.
Amelia gently laid a reassuring hand on his shoulder in an attempt to soothe him.
Unbeknown to them, someone lurked in the shadows, holding a phone and capturing the moment. The faint glow from the streetlamp provided little light for the person, yet the phone's camera videos every detail.
Jonah inhaled deeply, directing his focus. Placing his hands on the wound, a soft glow of gold ray of light started to shine from his palms. The light intensified, surrounding the wounded area, and gradually, the bleeding started to cease. The man's breathing became steady, and his cheeks started to regain color.
Amelia watched with amazement, feeling a mix of fear and admiration as her heart raced. She had watched Jonah's healing power previously, yet it continued to amuse her.
Her rare and powerful gift took a tremendous amount of energy from him every time he used it, and she was fully aware of this.
The man's injury was nearly fully healed as the golden light dimmed. He gazed at Jonah with wide, appreciative and surprised eyes. "Thanks... I'm not sure how you managed to do it, but thank you." The stranger said faintly.
Jonah grinned faintly, obviously drained. “Just relax and you will be fine.”
Amelia assisted the man in getting into a sitting position,
while her eyes anxiously surveyed the surroundings. To be on the safe side, we should take him to a hospital.
Jonah nodded, even though he was struggling to stay on his feet. “I will call for help.”
Shortly after, the noise of sirens echoed through the air, signaling the arrival of an ambulance with its lights flashing vividly in the dimly lit alley. Paramedics quickly arrived and took over from Amelia and Jonah. They both stepped back, obviously relieved.
While the paramedics were busy, Jonah stood against a wall, showing signs of exhaustion. Amelia moved to stand beside him, her face showing signs of concern. "Are you okay?"
He nodded, despite looking very pale. “I will be okay. I just need a brief moment.
Amelia looked back at the paramedics, who were assisting the injured man. “Jonah, you did well. You saved him from death."
Jonah smiled weakly. "We did it as a team."
The man was placed onto a stretcher by the paramedics, getting ready to be transported to the hospital. Jonah and Amelia were approached by one of them. "You both did exceptionally well. If you hadn't stepped in, he might not have survived.” The paramedics told them.
Amelia nodded, feeling a flood of relief. “We are happy that we were able to help.”
After the ambulance left, Jonah and Amelia remained in the peaceful alley, feeling the adrenaline gradually diminish. Jonah gazed at Amelia, his eyes reflecting both weariness and appreciation. "Let's leave this place."
She nodded in agreement , then placed an arm around his waist for added support while they strolled out of the alley. Neither of them saw the figure in the shadows slipping away with the phone still recording as they returned to the main street.
They strolled quietly, the occurrences of the evening burdening their thoughts. Upon arriving at Amelia's house, she faced Jonah with a worried expression evident on her face. You must take a break. "Enter, I'll prepare some tea.”
Jonah shook his head, though he looked like he could barely stand. “I’ll be okay, Amelia. I just need to get home.”
“Please,” she insisted. “You’ve done enough for one night. Let me take care of you.”
Jonah hesitated, then nodded, too tired to argue. “Okay. Just for a bit.”
Inside, Amelia guided him to the couch, where he sank down gently. She quickly made a cup of tea, bringing a steaming mug to him. “Here, this should help.”
He took the mug with a grateful smile. “Thanks, Amelia.”
