Chapter Eighteen: I Know It All

The night passed by too fast, Amelia didn't know how to feel about Jonah and Maxwell all together, it was messed up for her to think they had fought because of her, but amidst the confusion she couldn't help but wonder why she felt immensely connected with Jonah.

She didn't care that Maxwell engaged in the fight, she didn't care if he was disrespected, nor beaten in the process, all she could think of was how Jonah must have felt amidst the whole charade.

He left not quite long and she spent her time alone trying to hold herself from texting him back after he had said goodnight, it was a new development and it had enveloped her mind so much.

It made her uncomfortable, but at the end of the day, maybe she was overthinking it, and the fact she held a secret of his, was the reason why she felt so much bond for him, those were her thoughts as she finally slept.

The next morning, she was to visit the hospital in the afternoon, so she took her time, to tidy, she didn't text Jonah, this time she did it purposely, while staring at her phone every now and then to see if he texted her, but he didn't, it made her morning even longer as her heart weighed even more.

She hated herself for wanting him to talk to her, so she went to the hospital with a heavy heart, focusing on her purpose for the day which was treating some sick patient and staying away from him with all her might.

“Hey” Doctor Maxwell said as he approached Amelia, with his hands stretched he took her hands then placed a kiss on her knuckles.

Amelia didn't regard him as much, she passed him a faint smile then looked elsewhere, Maxwell wasn't satisfied, there was something different about him.

“Amelia, let's go on a date, what do you think? Before you say no, I want to tell you something, and that is I really like you, and I want us to be with each other” he said, more confidently this time.

Amelia, who still had her eyes darting around for the slightest snippet of Jonah just passed a smile, then went back to her medical analysis.

“I said something, Ammy can't you hear me?” it was beginning to irritate him, he tugged her arm.

“Why do you keep ignoring me, is it because of Jonah?, because you haven't seen him that's why you are moody?, well let me tell you, Moxley things he should get sacked, and he has been suspended for messing up, and guess what you can't save him anymore”

These words brought Amelia back to reality, she began to panic, her heart was rising, and she could not phantom what happened next as the tab she had in her hands fell to the floor.

“Ooops” Maxwell teased

He stepped back, picking the tab from the floor, then placing it back on the table.

“I didn't expect you to act like that but—”

“What did you do to Jonah?!” she pulled him by the collar in fright, her eyes bulging in its socket.

“Hey calm down, he just got what he deserved that's all” a malicious smile stretched on his lips, as he stared down at her, Amelia instantly knew he had done something while she was away, in a second all she thought about was the reason why he didn't chat her all along.

“Talk now—”

“Nothing, he has been on thin thread ever since he was suspended, and Moxley got the news that he was touching a patient he wasn't supposed to touch, and we fought severally in one day, you know the walls have ears, everyone is talking about it, and it got to moxleys ears, so he's facing trials”

“Maxwell!, damn”

Her hopes fell drastically, she regretted not calling him to ask what had happened all along.

Turning to leave the room Maxwell pulled her by her hands, “Amelia, you don't have to, he's not in the hospital,”

She pulled her hands away, and then ran out of the room, this act enraged Maxwell so much, seeing Amelia leave him for a cleaner who had no value, he hated that she would treat him this bad regardless of his effort to win her over.

“Damn” he cursed as he left the room, chasing after her but Amelia was headed towards moxleys office, with no specific purpose in mind, she wanted to confront him about his decision not minding that her job was at stake as well.

Without knocking she barged into the office, pushing it wide open. A doctor was in the office as well when she barged into the room.

“We need to talk”

Moxely stared in dismay, “what do you want Amelia, what's the problem you look startled” he questioned, for all he knew, she was the most composed doctor in the building, he suspected the worse, to have happened, but the moment she mentioned jonah's name, he was disappointed.

“Please tell me you didn't come here for that mad man”

“How dare you!, take your words back!, he's not mad” she retorted as she smacked her hands on the desk.

“Amelia, what has gotten into you! I want to say this is some pranks, but you can't be stupid enough to fight for Jonah, he's a deadbeat in this hospital”

“If you want to fire him then I am done, I won't work here anymore, damn you, and everyone here!”

“What?, Amelia, what has gotten into you?!” Moxley yelled at the top of his voice, not only was she embarrassing him before everyone in the premises, she was also making a fuss out of something so little.

“I said the same thing to her but she has something to do with Jonah, it's not normal” said Maxwell who had been waiting for a chance to say something all along.

Amelia glared at him, “Maxwell, this has nothing to do with you, stay out of this now”

“No I won't, I want everyone here to know how much assistance you need, he's a cleaner, he's not important, he's useless and replaceable!”

A resounding slap landed on his face that instant, taking him by surprise.

“It's the last warning, don't speak of him like that ever again!, you don't know him, you don't know what you are talking about, so shut the hell up!”

Silence reigned for a while as everyone was confused on the next course of action.

Amelia already felt awkward, the boost of adrenaline she felt a few seconds back had depleted now she stood fixed to the floor, waiting eagerly for the next squeak.

“You crossed the line Ammy, you shouldn't have done that” Maxwell finally broke the silence and stood properly on both feet, his eyes throwing daggers at Amelia as he said.

“Maybe you are only defending him because you are profiting from him, and before you think too far, just know I am aware, I know everything,” he said then walked out of the room.
