Chapter Fifty Seven: I Don't Need Anything From You
It was finally night time, Amelia was dressed in a dark flowing dress, Maxwell had outdone himself once more, it was too extravagant for a date.
Amelia stared at her reflection in the mirror, the makeup artist had managed to put away her frown, and those dark marks beneath her eyes, she simply looked stunning, even if she frowned, it would be taken as a model face.
She had removed the price tag from the dress earlier, Maxwell spent a fortune on it, and now he had sent a servant to come give her flowers, it was the second flower in a day, it was like a hobby to give a present.
This time she didn’t protest, she just took it, then opened the led of the box, it contained a leg chain, pure diamond.
She ran her fingers along the fine line of the leg chain, it was indeed beautiful, he had a very defined taste in women accessories and style, even the dress he had picked for her to wear to the ball was perfect, there was no need for any adjustment, it was surprisingly, but Amelia knew better than to let her surprise too hold of her stoic expression.
She placed her legs on the chair, then proceeded to hook the chain when her door opened. The scent of Maxwell perfume made her belly knot with disgust, she could feel her body tense up to it already.
“Damn it” she whispered beneath her breath.
“Let me help you with that” Maxwell took the leg chain without her permission he went on his knees then placed the chain around her neck.
“Now you can say your legs are priceless, like a rare jewel” he said with a satisfactory smile, Amelia didn’t say anything she just brought down her legs, then readjusted her clothes.
“At least smile, you would ruin your makeup”
“Can we just get this over with?, I am tired”
Amelia wasn’t having it, she just wanted to go to the so-called party that he wanted to attend so desperately and probably come back home and sleep.
“My mom, I told her all about you, she knows about your dead parents and your Buddhist grandma,”
“Did you also tell her that you are blackmailing me too, because trust me she would want to know that her son is a psychopath” Amelia had nonchalantly blurted her words, without regards to how Maxwell felt.
For a second, silence reigned in their midst, Maxwell wanted to say something, but closed his mouth afterwards. He might have made her his girlfriend, but there was no changing the obvious hatred she had for him, he wished it changed, that one morning she would wake up and see him for who he truly was.
He had painted an image in his head where he and Amelia were leaving the best life known to them, and he was certain he would be happy, but now that she doesn’t even want to look at him, that dream was becoming a fallacy.
“Please just act right, if things go well today you might not have to pretend to like me” his tone came off as hurried, as he walked out of the room, Amelia could already tell he was pissed by what she had said, but she wasn’t going to feel remorse, she was just being honest.
•••
Fast forward to the party, it was across town, Maxwell had boarded a family helicopter to take them over to his parents place, while all this was happening she could not help but ask how rich he was, she had known him as a doctor for months back but he hospital, but he wasn’t the type to act rich.
Maxwell was a dedicated doctor, not only that, he didn’t look like a child with a trust fund, the complexity of his life made Amelia doubt him even more, every now and then there was just some new things to uncover about him, unlike Jonah who swimmer in mystery but it very easy to understand, Maxwell was nothing like that.
He was a book with different stories.
Few minutes, they had landed on the rooftop of a big penthouse.
A man stood at the exit of the chopper hanger, with a coat in his hands, it was freezing outside.
As the pace of the blades reduced, Amelia and Maxwell walked out of it, covered in the coat Amelia was escorted inside.
Without a word being said, Amelia could already tell he was a bottler, he took her to the living room, then prostrated before Maxwell.
“It’s nice seeing you again max” he said, stretching his hands, he took maxwell's hands for a quick shake, Maxwell reciprocated with a complementary smile, as his eyes scanned the room, he was looking for his parents, but their living room was filled with strangers as always, but they were absent.
“Your mother will be here soon,” Steve, the bottler, said.
“Wonderful I don't plan on staying long”
The conversation was cut short when Maxwell spotted a lady decendinf down the stairs, she had a fur coat on her shoulders, her blonde hair nice stretched and tied stylishly into a fancy up do.
Her eyes sparked in the room, she casted an aura that had everyone staring at her, as she descended down the stairs, she waved her hands over to the ground, as happy blowing kisses like she was in some sort of fashion show.
That lady was Maxwell mother, an infamous multi millionaire, a mother to three doctors, who’s were millionaires and Maxwell happened to be their last child.
“She’s here!” Maxwell tugged on Amelia hands like a child who had just just found a toy, she was pulled towards the crowd and finally stopped before the lady.
“Maxy!” Maxwell’s mother said as she threw her hands around her son.
They were both engulfed in their moment that they had forgotten Amelia was just Standing beside them all along.
Gloria, maxwells mother held max by the cheek, her eyes welled with tears as she stared at her son.
“You didn’t tell me you would be coming, I would have done thing special” she said, she pulled him in for a kiss again, this time much more fiercely, she placed a kiss on both side of his cheek.
“Stay with me,” she begged.
“Mom, you know I have to get back to work”
Gloria rolled her eyes, “you say work with so much seriousness like you needed it in the first place, Max, I she told you, one join the family bussiness”
“Mom, no I want to be doctor, remember telling you I want to save the world, one person at time”
She pulled him for a kiss again, her hands stretched his suits then she placed a kiss on his forehead.
“As long as you are happy”
“Well mum, I want you to meet someone”
Finally their moment had ended and Amelia was finally in the light, she stood shyly beside Maxwell all this while, and now that she finally had their attention, her first impression pulled her down.
“Hell — hello” she stuttered.
Gloria grimaced to the sight of her.
“Assistant?”
She couldn’t hide the fact that’s she didn’t fancy the timid lady before her, Gloria scanned the lady with her judgy eyes, “what is your name?”
“Amelia”
“Amelia who?”
“Mom, she’s not my assistant, she’s my girlfriend”
Maxwell leaned over, he pulled Amelia’s petite figure closer to him, he placed a kiss on her forehead, then wrapped his hands around her waist.
“Mom, I came here to show you my woman, and my first real girlfriend, Amelia just like I had told you”
“Hey” Amelia responded in a timid tone.
Gloria didn’t know how to act about the whole thing, Maxwell had never brought a girl home, he had his fling ones one a while he he never brought a girl home, she wanted to tear Amelia open, to know what made her special.
“She’s the lady you told me about?, she’s doesn’t look rich”
“I don’t need her money,”
“But honey” Gloria persisted, there was an instant dislike in Amelia, she wanted to blame it on her timid behaviour and her inability to make eye contact with her, but the real truth was jealousy, Gloria was jealous of Amelia.
Was it the hair or her timid personality that gave her off to Maxwell, she just wanted to find out.
“It’s nice meeting your Amelia, like to the family”
Gloria took Amelia’s hand then pulled her in for a hug, and that was the end of their conversation. Throughout the party Maxwell had been trying to cheer her up and introduce her to other people who were present but nothing seemed to work.
“Let me just go get a drink,” she said to Maxwell before pulling out of his embrace, then walked towards the bar counter, that was when someone caught her eye.
It was Eric, the same man whom Jonah had blabbed about all this while.
