Chapter Eight: Just As Clueless
Jonah and Amelia were seated facing each other, he ran his fingers along the edge of his tea mug while inhaling deeply, looking into her eyes with a blend of doubt and resolve.
"Amelia, I really don't know how I got my powers. I'm just as clueless about it as you are."
Amelia leaned forward, intrigued by her curiosity. "What are you trying to say? Have you never had any clue? No hint whatsoever?” She asked again.
He nodded his head at a slow pace. "Not exactly. But, a few days ago I had a particular dream. It seemed... altered. More vibrant, more realistic than any dream I've ever experienced."
Jonah stopped to collect his thoughts. Amelia remained calm, keeping her gaze fixed on his face the entire time.
"In the dream, I was still in the dark," he added. It felt as if I was in emptiness, yet I could make out faint figures swirling nearby. Then, from the darkness, emerged these strange men. Their faces were not visible to me, but they sounded familiar, as if I should recognize them but I couldn't. It was a weird feeling.”
Amelia's eyes grew wider. "What did they say?"
“They informed me that there was a reason for my powers and my powers were only the start,” his voice became more intense. "They claimed there's a lot that I am unaware of."
Looking at his hands, he seemed to be seeking answers in them. “I was told that I had a reason for having the powers, a task to fulfill. However, they didn't inform me about its source. Only that I would know everything eventually.
Amelia extended her arm over the table to hold his hand, her touch calming and comforting. "Do you believe their words?"
Jonah lifted his head, locking eyes with her once more. "I don't know. It just felt very real, yet, it was only a dream. Or at least, that is the story I continue to tell myself. But, a part of me can't ignore the feeling that there may be some truth in it. Perhaps, possibly there is something more to this than I I understand.”
Amelia clasped his hand tightly. “No matter what it is, we will solve the puzzle together. I'll help you and support you.”
Jonah's lips curled in a small smile. "I really appreciate it, Amelia. It means a lot to know you're willing to help.”
Jonah checked his wristwatch, watching the silver ticking hands moving steadily closer to midnight. He let out a quiet sigh as the burden of the day's stress and how it began to weigh him down.
"It is becoming late," he mentioned, disrupting the peaceful quietness shared by both of them. "I need to go back to my place."
Amelia nodded with understanding evident in her gaze . “Sure. Thank you, Jonah, for sharing this with me. And for having dinner with me.”
He rose to his feet, the chair softly scratching the wooden floor. “Thank you for dinner, I really loved it.
When he left her house, the chilly evening breeze caressed his skin. He paused to take a deep breath, looking back briefly to find Amelia still sitting and smiling at him encouragingly.
Jonah started walking back home, with his mind filled with various thoughts and possibilities. The dream, the enigmatic individuals, the assurance of a greater mission all appeared to be parts of a puzzle he hadn't completely grasped yet. But, he wasn't going to let it ruin his evening.
After Jonah left, Amelia remained seated, her thoughts consumed by his amazing ability to heal. If she could only persuade him to utilize his talent for helping patients at the hospital. The ability to rescue lives, provide hope for those who are hopeless— it was too important to overlook.
Suddenly, the loud ringing of her phone interrupted her thoughts. Swiftly, she picked the phone up and glanced at the caller ID. It was a call from the hospital.
"Hello?" she responded, a hint of worry in her voice.
"Amelia, there is a critical situation happening right now. We require all nurses who are currently available to return to the hospital right away.”
She felt her heart beat faster. "I will arrive as quickly as possible," she replied, hanging up and quickly packing her stuff.
While leaving the house quickly, Amelia's mind went back to Jonah. She had to find a way to get him to heal patients but, at this moment, the hospital needed her attention, and she had to concentrate on the urgent situation.
Entering the chilly night air, thoughts of Jonah's abilities and the advantages of using it to rescue lives still lingered in her mind, offering a glimmer of hope for how much good it would do
Amelia hailed a taxi, feeling a sense of urgency and anxiety, her heart racing. As the driver drives towards the hospital, the city lights whizzed by, her mind racing with thoughts of the emergency awaiting her.
Upon her arrival, chaos was all she saw. Doctors and nurses were moving quickly, their expressions filled with focus and concern. She walked through the chaos, as she looked for the closest coworker.
She spoke to a fellow nurse, "What happened?"
"It's a serious situation," the nurse responded, her eyes showing worry. “The patient entered a coma and is currently in a vegetative condition. We have exhausted all possible options”
Amelia felt her heart plunge. She was fully aware of the consequences. With a calming breath, she composed herself and began helping out, providing assistance to the team, and striving to bring some sense of organization to the disorder.
After some time passed and things calmed down, Amelia found a peaceful spot and took out her phone. After pausing briefly, she finally dailed Jonah's number.
" Jonah. Can you come to the hospital? I have something to show you," she said with the urgency of the situation evident in her voice.
"Amelia, are you okay?" Jonah's tone was brimming with worry.
“Just come, I'll explain everything once you arrive.”
She hung up the phone, already beginning to consider what Jonah might be capable of. If there was a moment to persuade him, it is now. The fate of many individuals may rely on it. She wanted him to help and began healing secretly but she wasn't sure if he would agree to it.
As Amelia made her way to her office, the noise in the hallway kept getting louder. She hastened her speed, feeling a sense of discomfort coming over her. Upon reaching the corner, she spotted a cluster of nurses and doctors surrounding a patient who was seated in bed, appearing confused and restless.
Entering the room, she inquired, "What is happening?"
The patient faced her, his eyes filled with bewilderment. “I want a good explanation about what happened to me! Yesterday, I was in unbearable agony, barely awake, and now... now there's not even a mark on me! How can that be?"
Amelia's heart was pounding. This was a patient she had secretly requested Jonah to cure the day before. She composed herself swiftly and went over to the patient, giving a comforting smile.
She gently said “please relax. I know this may be unexpected, but you are in good hands. At times, the body has the ability to heal in extraordinary ways.”
The patient nodded in disagreement, showing his lack of conviction. “There is nothing good about this, it's actually impossible! There has to be an explanation.”
The rest of the employees shared confused looks and whispered to each other. Amelia was aware that she needed to handle the situation as fast as possible.
She tried to calm the patient down, "We will find out what happened but at the moment, let's concentrate on the fact that you are in good health and safe. We will conduct tests to figure out what has happened.”
The patient hesitantly agreed, yet his eyes displayed a combination of bewilderment and doubt. While the nurses guided him for more tests, Amelia sneaked off to her office, her thoughts filled with the consequences of what just happened.
After shutting the door, she leaned back against it and took a deep breath. The reality of Jonah's powers was becoming impossible to hide, and the questions from patients and staff would only grow. She needed to talk to Jonah, now more than ever. But, she wasn't even sure if that would be a smart idea.
She could hear the muffled voices of the nurses outside how bewildered they were about what had just happened.
She wanted to tep out but she wasn't even sure she should. She knew that they would look for answers and being the one that attended to them the previous day, She would be the most questioned.
With her back leaned against the wall, she held her head in her palms as she thought about the best way to go about it but her head was in a whirlwind of too many thoughts all at the same time.
