Chapter Twenty Six: Searching For New Job

The voices tormented Jonah, maybe the keepers were right, and he should have killed Maxwell, but Amelia was involved now, she would never forgive him, she would tear him apart, she would hate him.

All this and many more were the reason why Jonah could not help himself, he remembered being mentally tormented before he went to see Amelia at the restaurant.

He has wished she would be meeting him at his house, as they have planned earlier, but he chose to take her to a restaurant which was nice, but seeing Amelia finely dressed for Maxwell, and knowing Maxwell was winning, he could not contain his anger.

Now Amelia didn’t want to see him, looking at his screen, he thought about calling her number, but he remembered vividly.

How she warned him, her intentions were made clear, she didn’t want to see him.

A mournful sigh escaped his lips, as he rolled over to the other side of this torn mattress, he could not get himself to sleep.

Amelia had never been angry with him since he knew her, maybe he should go meet her, he should tell her he’s sorry and would tell Maxwell to go on another date with her, he would listen to Maxwell, he would be obedient, he would listen!!

His heart felt like a furnace as he rolled over to the other side, he hated himself even more as he reminisced on the scenario, he would have done things more differently than he did when he was there with her.

The night drew even closer to dawn, and somewhere between 4am to 6am, he was finally able to catch a glimpse of sleep, just to be woken by the taunting sound of the alarm clock he had subconsciously snoozed for thirty minutes.

Gently, and reluctantly, he bats his eyelids against each other, trying to regulate the ray of sun peeking through the window blinds, his body weak and his head suppressed by a bad migraine, a slow sigh escaped his lips, as he recollects his memory from the previous day.

He had to overlook it if he wanted to move on with the day, so Jonah stood from the bed, his eyes scanning his tattered apartment, in the past week, he had been so caught up in helping Amelia and battling his demons that he had forgotten the basic necessity, which was a clean environment.

He didn’t have a job at the moment, so he wasn’t worried he would be late for an appointment, or maybe scared he would be bullied and scolded for doing something wrong, he was home alone, this time with no one to see and no external motive.

He cleaned his house then prepared breakfast for himself, he was used to skipping dinner and most times lunch, so he was rest assured, the little provision he had at home would serve him for a week before he finally ran out of supply.

The last thing Jonah wanted was to go beyond that level, so he took it upon himself to take a stroll outside his apartment for any vacancy he might find, he was willing to work anywhere and everywhere that didn’t include a hospital, then he won’t be triggered to heal anyone, which means he would be free from harm.

After breakfast, he walked miles on foot, entering stores and the nearest schools for a vacancy for a cleaner. His day wasn’t as fruitful as he had imagined, it was tougher now, and people asked more questions than usual.

‘Maybe things had changed since I last seemed for a job’ he thought to himself, as he walked back home, he was told to come back the next day, while others boldly told him they won’t be hiring him.

He held on to the little glimpse of hope, that all would be fine and maybe the next day would be a little bit better since he woke up on the wrong side of the bed and barely got any sleep.

As Jonah walked down the path, humming the sound of a sweet melody, he said the cry of a cat nearby which pulled his attention, to a cat leaping with a bleeding leg.

“Oh poor thing” he said as he approached the cat, it attempted running away but was caught and coaxed by Jonah.

“Don’t be scared, I got you,” he said while running the cat gently on its fur, his fingers massaging his jaw till the cat slightly relaxed on his arms, then Jonah placed it on the floor, his eyes scanning the environment, to take note of the passerby.

He couldn’t risk having another curious eyes take note of him again.

Nobody cared about a stray cat, nor a poor man like him, as everyone happened to be minding their business, Jonah placed his hand on the cat's legs, it was fractured and was causing immense pain to it.

He hasn’t healed an animal since his new power surfaced, but it would be a huge milestone for him to heal this animal.

With a little concentration, he felt the invisible aura escape his hands then into the cat, who was still frightened and tightly wrapped around his hands.

When he was done, he could tell it was already done, and he was healed. To Jonah, it felt like therapy, he felt his heart ease up a lot more than usual, he felt like he finally had a purpose.

This little act made him smile a lot more as he jogged happily back home, just to see Amelia standing at the door of his house, with a worried expression.

“Amelia?” He asked, surprised to see her.

At the sight of him, her worries depleted, as she ran after him, immediately falling into his arms.

“Jonah, I was worried!” She said,

Her presence took him by surprise, does this mean she has forgiven him?

“Where were you?, I was here for hours, calling you, your phone was not reachable, it kept going straight to voicemail” she said, still clung to him.

At that moment, all Jonah was trying to do was regulate his palpitating heart, she made him anxious, and mute.

“I—I went out seeking for a job” he stuttered
