Chapter Thirty Two: Unwise Repercussions

The pain didn't get any better, neither did it reduce, Jonah sagged back on the bed, totally exhausted, it felt like a fever, yet a terrible injury, an affliction, had rendered him useless.

He tried to curtail the after-effects but nothing seemed to be working anymore, he just let anelis coax him, she placed her hands on his head, then down his cheeks, her eyes warmed as she noticed his lips were trembling but he held it with his teeth.

“Let me call the doctor, maybe its a bad fever”

“No, it's not that bad” he lied through his teeth, but Amelia could tell already, she patted him gently till he fell asleep again, while at this, she watched him closely, Jonah could only sleep because he held her hands, and while he was deep in his slumber, he held her firmly.

Amelia stared lovingly at him, this same man had been through hell and back these past few days, and she could not help but bear the guilt that followed afterward.

As she watched Jonah sleep, she noticed few outbreaks or sweat on his forehead, and his tightly gripped hand were now moist, it was sudden, so sudden and soon he was deranged in sweat, the pillow beneath his head was soaked, she could feel the heat from where she sat, but his hands were cold.

“Jonah,” she tapped him vigorously to wake up, but Jonah didn't move, she placed her head on his chest to check if he was alive, which he was, but his body was going through so much already.

“Jonah!” she tapped him again, he groaned gently but barely opened his eyes.

Amelia was confused and eager to find a solution, she wanted to call for help, to seek some sense of assurance that she wasn't about to witness his death, but no one would ever understand what was going on with him, maybe it was because he was stressed and she barely gave him time to heal, those were exactly her thought as she guilt tripped herself into taking the blame again.

“What do I do now?”

She stood from the seat, successfully pulling her hands away from Jonah's grip, he reached out to her almost immediately, taking her by surprise. She stopped on her tracks, her eyes and settled on Jonah, as he muttered words she could not hear.

Amelia felt indecisive, she could not move, neither could she stay right there with him, he was sweating, she needed to clean his body, and possibly do something rather than holding her tears and watching him suffer.

“I will be right back,” she said, then peeled his tightly wrapped sweaty finger off her arm, dropping it by the bed, she walked out of the room, then in a minute, she was back with a bowl of water and a hand towel.

Gently, she deepened the towel into water, squeezed then placed it on his head, she felt him jitter as the towel touched his skin.

“You will be fine, I promise” Spontaneously cleaning his face, she felt his temperature reduce to the room temperature and with the towel over his head, if he had an ache, it would help with it.

She had done all she could afford to do without any medical assistance, she had prayed for some supernatural intervention, and hoped for the best rather than focusing on the worst scenery.

And in a few hours, she saw his lashes bat on each other, still unconvinced that it was an attempt to wake up, she looked out for more signs.

Few more minutes later his fingers moved, his lips, then his eyes slightly opened.

“Jonah?”

“Am— Ammy,” he said in a dying whisper.

“Jonah I am here” she reached out to him, a grateful smile on her lips and she stared at him, “oh goodness I thought something bad happened to you, how are you feeling?, do you have a headache? Are you hungry?, what do you want to eat?”

She stood up from the seat, touching his face, she attempted to move to the living room to get something for him to eat when Jonah held her back. He had a weak smile on his face as he watched her worry about him.

“I don’t need anything , and I am fine, thanks for watching me” his tone was more clearer and slightly energetic now, as she spoke to her, he pulled her back to her seat, then sat down on his bed.

“You look stressed, you should have some rest, and I will prepare something for us to eat”

“What!, you almost died Jonah, I won’t let you cook, don’t worry about me, I am totally fine” she stood from her chair, turning around with her arms wide spread out, “see I am fine, totally fine”

Her urge to reassure him that she was fine made Jonah amused even more.

The sight was beautiful to behold, and mostly because her face was the first he had to see when he woke up.

“Well I am fine too” he stood up from the bed in a hurry like he wasn’t the one who was fidgeting a while back, he looked fine, and totally back to normal.

“Jonah” Amelia reached out to him but his body was back to its right temperature and he seemed really fine, there was no way it was a fever, he shouldn’t feel this fine out of the blue, but Jonah was smiling at her, she didn’t want to ask further questions rather she chose to enjoy the moment.

“Why don’t we check the videos that just have been captured in the streets, it’s about time we gather evidence against that sucker”

“But?” She said with concern laced in her voice.

“Amelia I am fine, I was just stressed” Jonah turned, showing her the same gesture she had shown him earlier.

“You don’t have to worry”

“Okay” she responded in defeat.

Jonah smiled warmly at her, “we already had a long day, while don’t I got home, take my bath and maybe get something to eat then we can go on with the research”

“Sure sure” Amelia said

She followed him till they were both at the door, it was her que to close the door and bid him farewell, but her heart was heavy and she felt she needed to do something, it had been in her mind for a while now.

“Wait” she said, then hurriedly placed a kiss on his cheek.

“Bye, stay safe”

Taken aback by the gesture, Jonah stared at her, awestruck, lost for words, he muttered the words.

“Bye”
