Chapter Twenty: Is This A Joke?
The news about what has happened in the hospital has gotten to Amelia, she was panicking and wanted to meet Jonah, but his phone was not reachable.
He was over the news now, she knew Maxwell wanted this, “that prick” she cursed as she tossed her phone to the chair.
What was he going to do with Jonah now?, he would tell everyone, the hospital would shut him down or use him, the government would diset him, history would repeat itself again, Jonah would hate her, she promised to keep it a secret .
She felt bad, so bad because she was the one who told him to heal that man in the alley, and now Maxwell knew about it.
She reached out for her phone again, about to call Jonah when an idea crossed her mind, she had to go see Jonah, so she grabbed her phone, then ran out of the house, boarded a cab, straight to Jonah’s apartment.
The last time she was there, he had told her his deepest secret, now she was coming back because it had been exposed.
The weather complimented how she felt inside, her heart was heavy as she approached his building.
It almost looked deserted, but the looks of his footwear outside his house gave her a hint that he was inside.
“Jonah” she called out, before reaching the door, “Jonah, it's Amelia” she added.
Her heart was heavy with worry, her eye clouded with tears, she knocked on his door, she felt like an ill luck in his life, it all started because of her at some point.
“Jonah, I know you don't want to talk to me, but please—”
Jonah opened the door, before Amelia could finish her statement, he pushed through forcefully then pulled her inside, bare-chested and sweety, his living room was completely dart, and hot.
“Jonah?, what's going on!” Amelia asked in panic, as her weary eyes darted around the room, she thought of the worst cases at that moment.
“My mind, they are all over, they are here, the keepers, here, in my mind… here” he said amidst bridging gasp between every word.
Amelia was confused, ‘keepers’ she thought to herself, she thought they only attacked him in his sleep, they should only exist behind his eyes,in the darkest of nights, not in reality.
Somehow, Jonah had inflicted her with fear as she began to look around, she could only see things with the spec of lights from the widows, and nothing more, the heat made her hyperventilate and the sweat blurred her perspiration.
The little space in the room added to her dismay as there wasn't much space to run around, and she was always bumping into Jonah.
“Jonah, please tell me this is a joke, is someone or something where?”
“Dark smoke, they surround me,” he said.
She bumped into him again, but this time they both lost their stance as they fell to the floor.
With Amelia untop Jonah, he felt dramatically calmer, his hands wrapped around her, with her head on her chest, for a minute all they did was exhale and take in their heart beat.
“Jonah, what was chasing you, where are the keepers?” She asked. “Tell me exactly what happened”
“In the room, a dark smoke came to me,” he said, this time at a more calculated pace as he tried his best to calm down.
Silence reigned in their midst for a while.
“My grandma, let's see her tomorrow, she will help you out” she said, finally standing from his body, then helping him up as well.
Now the keepers were a group of people, who were to regulate the peace and order, they protected the city from people like Jonah, from generation to generation they were put in place to stop the powerful force surrounding supernatural beings reincarnating as humans and now they had found a new prey.
“Okay” Jonah said. Then went forward to open the windows.
“How are you doing,” Amelia asked as she finally came closer to him, she placed her hands around his shoulder, then her other hands cupped his chin slightly, her pupils dilated as she stared at his damp eyes.
“I am sorry, for everything,”
“How, you did nothing” Jonah retorted, he would not let her take the blame for whatever was going on in his life.
“I made them come after you, I had caused your secret to come out in the open, and it’s all my fault that these beings are after you now”
“What do you mean?” Jonah asked, still oblivious about Maxwell's awareness of his powers.
“Jonah, Maxwell,” she said.
The mention of his name infuriated Jonah even more, “ he cost me my job, and then I got blamed for fighting that ass, I will do it over again no matter what it cost me, I saw what he did to you, he forced himself on you, and you let him kiss you”
His tone was bitter, the scene flashed in his mind, the way Maxwell was all over her it pissed him even more.
“I won’t go back there”
“You can’t, I don’t think moxley will want you back, but that’s not the problem, Maxwell knows our secret Jonah, and he’s threatening to tell the world about it”
“What!, how!” Jonah jerked from his chair in fright, he wasn’t expecting what she had just said.
“The alley, he’s was there, he has a video proof, and I believe he would find the man we healed, he would say it out”
“But that’s impossible, he has a proof, that’s why he has come unto us that way, that’s why he picked a fight with you, he knows moxley is threatened by you, and he knows why we have not said it yet”
‘The keeper came unto him earlier, more aggravated, it wasn’t like a friendly reminder as they do usually, it was an infuriated source of energy, like the smoke in his nightmares, he had broken their conduct, he was going to die like his ancestors, they told him to stay calm, his ancestors told him to explore in his reign, now he was stuck between keeping his identity a secret and owning it against all odds.
“I am sorry,”
“What does he want to do about it?”
“We don’t know, he has been suspended as well” said Amelia, pacing back and forth, as she contemplated what to do next about Jonah.
“Let's meet him up, maybe we can settle our differences, what do you think?” Amelia could tell Jonah was uncomfortable with meeting up with Maxwell and having to reason with him on matters like this, but now they had to put their pride aside.
To Amelia, it was just fight between them because of the past incident of Jonah touching a patient but little does she know, it was a game of who gets the girl.
