Chapter Forty Six: Involuntarily Actions
The night finally came to an end, Jonah and Amelia had parted ways, with Jonah back to his home and Amelia cradled in her duvet, a lot of thought occupied her mind, needless to say, the missing baby was equally as important, but she could not help but think of Jonah.
It might be the dedication he showed towards helping her out, or the time spent together, but everything about him made her smile, she imagined scenarios that would never happen, but at least it made her smile, she wondered if Jonah felt the same way, but it would be too forward to assume he would romanticise their partnership like she did.
She felt it was diabolical, so she spent the rest of the night cautioning herself against it.
While on the other hand was Jonah, in the middle of his living room, with sharpened pencils and multiple rough sheets, crumbled and tossed to every corner of the house. He was desperate, hungry and mostly furious that one man had made him go through so much already, Maxwell was keeping him awake, the thought of it made his heart boil, but he channelled his anger into plotting a way to meet up this man who happened to be in talking terms with the assigned culprit.
In his own terms. No sane person would talk with Maxwell, he was an obsessive psychopath, coated in white long suit, and given a title, because he spent years learning a skill he should be treated with. He was sick, and Jonah could not wait to tell the world that Maxwell, a certified doctor is sick!, and needs to be locked up with psychopaths like him.
After so many failed trials in outlining a solid plot to lead him to the path he wanted, Jonah retired.
“Damn it” he caused as he slammed the pencils on the desk, his large palms crumbled the piece of paper he had penned down his to do list then he tossed it across the room, he was going to do whatever it takes to bring Maxwell to his knees, he might hide, and believe Jonah was not already unto him, but not for too long.
Jonah went to bed that night worried, and eager to do something about his thought. He didn’t want to disappoint Amelia, whatever made him a healer would also want him to be a man of principles, and a man to always keep people like Maxwell away.
The night was overall short, with both parties lost in thoughts, but with a new day comes a new task, Jonah was placed on a duty to follow the new lead he had found, his name was Eric, as early as six in the morning, Jonah was out of his house, seated in a coffee store opposite Eric house, his aim was to know his routine.
He already knew what Eric did for a living, though it wasn’t precise, he was rest assured that whatever business he had to do isn't pure, and never for the betterment of all.
Eric came out of his compartment at 9, Jonah was instantly alerted, he brought out his phone, to take pictures, Eric was going to a jog, Jonah wanted to follow him, maybe know his stopping point in most of his hikes, but he was dressed in jeans and a simple T shirt, even a mad man will know he’s a stalker.
Maybe next time he would dress for occasions like this, but at least he made one progress; whoever this man was, he didn’t play with his fitness and he liked to run.
Eric was back by 12, Jonah jotted it down, he would be back at the same time the next day to make sure this was a habit.
He waited again for his cuprit to make a move, which he did in about thirty minutes time, he took a cab to somewhere unknown, it was time for Jonah to strike, he was not going to seat down there and watch the man go, so he boarded a cab along the way, then followed him.
Eric stopped at a mall, Jonah felt his hopes deflate, but it wasn’t a sign to give up on stalking him, Jonah decided to spend some money on things he didn’t need, so he took a trolley, then wandered behind the man, picking up something random, till he got to the cashier, Jonah was just behind him.
He found out Eric liked women, he was flirty, and had taken the cashier's number. Jonah followed right through till both of them were now outside. While pushing a trolley, he waved over to Jonah when their eyes locked,j jaimah reciprocated and the both pathways.
He snapped Eric’s plate number for reference purpose, and then sent all the details to Amelia who happened to be on a break at that point in time.
The day was full of tasks, there were so many things she needed to attend to and it felt like her work world never ended at this point but seeing Jonah message pop on her screen had provoked a smile on her face, she hurriedly opened it.
*Eric is a beer lover, exercises by 9 and flirts a lot, here are some other details, a man like him won’t be hard to make a friend, trust me*
Amelia was about tapping on her screen when Maxwell popped from behind her, his scent gave him off immediately, which made her pop her phone back into her coat.
“Hey max, what are you doing here?” she said in the most calm voice she could phantom in such a state of mind.
Maxwell wasn’t looking delightful, he looked bothered and unfazed by her cheerful question.
“Is anything the problem?” Amelia asked, in hopes that she says something that would give her a clue, but rather what he had left her speechless.
“I know Jonah is after me, you can’t fool me, so go back home and tell him to stop whatever he thinks he’s doing because I will win”
Amelia could not believe her own ears, Maxwell must be spewing nonsense, he does not know anything, Jonah was cautious all this while, that was what she thought, that was what she knew, that Jonah had been cautious and everything they did was undercover.
“Yes. I know he is following me around, Amelia, I am no full, you might think I don’t see things, but I see the way you are nice to me, I know you, I know you are up to something”
He sounded mostly paranoid as he forked his hair with his finger, his breath harsh and mostly eager, Amelia wanted to defend Jonah’s honour, to make sure that she covered their track from their own end, but she felt tongue tied and feared she would say something that professes how she truly feels.
Maxwell waited for a while, staring directly into her ears, he had hit a soft spot in her heart, and he savoured the feeling he had from it, and just when he was done, he walked out on her, leaving Amelia at the brink of losing her mind.
She picked up her phone, perspiration clouding her hands as she dialled Jonah’s number, it wasn’t going through, Maxwell might have not said any threat, but she knew he was ruthless. He would harm Jonah, he would harm the baby.
Three missed calls, fourth, fifth Jonah was not reachable, Amelia began to panic, she could feel her eyelids moist with premature tears, what if something had happened to him, what if she can’t save him now, what if Maxwell was a step ahead.
“Doctor Amelia! You are needed in ward 106, urgently”
On hearing the call, Amelia was lost, should she stand there and wait for a response from Jonah, or go into the ward and save someone’s life.
