Chapter Forty Nine: The Invincible Enemy
Jonah dawdled in a haze of confusion, his world was falling apart, maybe he would have not gone to Eric’s house and confronted Sarah, it was all his fault that Amelia was in trouble.
Maxwell must have tampered with her to piss him off, or maybe. He had captured her just to make him furious, all these and many more teased his mind as he waved down an approaching cab, it stopped before him then he hopped in.
“Take me to Wales lane, now!”
Without hesitation the cab zoomed off,Jonah picked up his phone again, he called Amelia again but she wasn’t picking up, Jonah panicked, something was really wrong.
Few minutes, into the drive, they finally arrived at Amelia’s house, Jonah got out of the car then tossed all the money in his pocket away then ran towards the front door, the front door was left open, when he got there, and to his surprise, everything was in shambles, the walls were dragged down and her entire house was raided.
Jonah’s heart fell to his stomach, all his hope fell right through.
“Amelia!” He called out! As he searched through the house, checking everywhere for her, she was nowhere to be found.
“Amelia!”he shouted again.
He went into her room to find her on the bed, raddled in her sheets, she was sobbing gently and mostly fidgeting, for a second Jonah felt relieved to see her, he thought Maxwell had kidnapped her.
“Amy, you are fine!, thank goodness” he wrapped his hands around her, as he pulled her in his embrace, he had no idea what would happen if he had entered her house and she wasn’t in there.
“Thank goodness nothing happened to you, I don’t know what I would have done”
“He entered my house, we are not safe!I don’t know how he came into my house. I could not call anyone, my phone was missing. I felt naked,” she sobbed in his arms. Jonah was confused, totally disoriented.
“He’s not going to do anything, I promise, I will pin him down with evidence this time around, and that’s for sure”
“Jonah we can’t do anything, he’s invisible, we can’t kill him”
Jonah had that impulse for so long already, but Amelia was the only reason why he hadn’t acted on it, the keepers had warned him that Maxwell was a threat to them and his power, but Amelia wanted to be civil about that heartless obsessive monster.
So far only Maxwell was a threat to them, others who knew about his abilities were smart enough to keep it to themselves but Maxwell happened to be different, Jonah clenched his fist in disgust, he was not going to spare him this time around, even if Amelia wanted it to be a bloodless fight, he was going to make sure he gets what he deserved.
“ it’s fine Amelia, he just wanted to spark fear into your heart, and believe it or not he had won, so let me tidy your house and possibly buy the things you need”
He made an attempt to stand but Amelia held him close, “don’t” she said amidst her tears.
“I am a little bit scared,” she mouthed. Casually sniffing in her mucus infected nostrils, her eyes were red with tears and repressed sadness, she held him closer.
“Just stay a little bit longer”
Jonah didn’t push or resist, he just sat there till he could coax her back to bed, it was till early in the day and she had taken the day off to cool her mind just for an intruder to break into her house while she was still present, lock her in her room then break everything.
There were no cameras? Jonah thought to himself as he looked around the house, even if there was, Maxwell was smart enough to look for it and cover it.
Amelia was already fast asleep when Jonah stood from where he sat, he walked over to the living room in search of something that could put Maxwell in jail for at least a month of two while he tried to figure out all that was happening, but everything had been destroyed so skillfully, there was no print on anything, the door had been picked and there was no sign of damage.
Jonah swore he would avenge her, and Maxwell would sleep in jail for making his beloved cry too much, he also knew since he was nothing but a lowlife with no fame attached to his name, he could not throw a tantrum like he wanted to do so badly.
He would cause a commotion on the net, and people would be by his side, Maxwell would have nowhere else to hide and he would be ridiculed, but without that, Jonah was almost as good as useless, but he didn’t mind, he was always getting closer, each day, his detective skills and instinct was stronger now, he was no longer a cleaner in a hospital, he was a god.
Jonah picked up the shades from the floor, then began to place them into the bean bag that he held till it was completely filled, the house was quiet empty, there was nothing in the house that could be broken that wasn’t already broken.
Only the chairs and tangible asset was left, Jonah pictured some of the broken items that he was family with then he began to list them down so he could replace them, and while he jotted the task to perform on a crumpled sheet of paper, he heard Amelia’s voice behind him.
“Jonah, thanks for cleaning up” she uttered as she sluggishly came to him, her soft small palm rested on his shoulders, gently squeezing, Jonah literally felt his heart squeeze with delight, the feeling was ecstatic, it made his belly knot with delight as he took her palm from his shoulder, a dying urge to kiss it overwhelmed him.
He wanted to do it so bad, but didn’t know how she would react to it, Jonah did it anyway.
He slowly placed a kiss on her hands then smiled at her.
“How are you feeling now” still smiling, he stared warmly at her.
“Fine” her once calm response became cold. “Jonah!"What happened to you?Why is your face swollen?” she panicked.
She reached out to him, hurriedly leaning on his body her hands caressed the swollen part of his face, that was when Jonah realised he was actually bruised, he had deemed the headache something natural for all the stress he was feeling just the pain was just too normal, it wasn’t a big deal to him he had felt worse, and secondly he was becoming numb to pain, which should be a good thing.
“That’s a fist mark!, did you fight someone!” She asked
Amelia ran to her room then came out with an aid box, “seriously! What happened, who punched you” she began to clean, Jonah tried to stop her but it was useless.
“It’s not a big deal”
“Did you see Maxwell, was he the one that attacked you!” She asked, Jonah waved his head.
“It’s Eric”
Amelia froze. Her heart beat palpated in a very dramatic manner, what name was oddly familiar. It was the same person she had warned Jonah to stay away from.
“What do you mean Eric? I told you to stay away from him.”
“See I am sorry Amelia, but—“
“Leave my house now!” Amelia commanded, she stood from Jonah's body then stepped back, her hands pointed at the door as she commanded him to leave her house.
“Amelia please listen to me”
“Leave!”
“He’s working with Sarah, they are both doing this, I believe Maxwell had a hold on Sarah, she was staying with Eric I just wanted to prove it”
“I told you to stay away!”
“Amelia”
“Get the hell out!” She shoved him.
