Chapter Thirty Four: Wrong Call

Jonah placed the baby on the bed, he paced back and forth, as he stared at the baby shaking in its wrap, it was just a tiny little figure, he might let it fall by mistake, then whoever set him up would call him a murderer, Jonah looked around for a camera, but everywhere was pretty normal.

Jonah stood fixed by the floor, as he imagined the complication that follows, and just then, Amelia walked into the house, taking him by surprise, Jonah ran towards Amelia, pulling her in for a hug.

“Thank goodness you are here” his hand tightly wrapped around her for a second too long, leading to an awkward situation, Jonah pulled away, he cleared his throat, then strengthened his clothes.

“I am sorry, I didn’t mean for that to happen” he said then stepped aside so she could see the baby.

It’s little squeak pulled Amelia’s attention to the baby, nicely wrapped in a woollen material, she stared at it in dismay then back at Jonah, trying so hard to see a resemblance, maybe a relative must have done this, but the baby looked nothing like Jonah, so it was definitely a stranger who did this.

“Well, who ever did this must trust you, don’t you think “

“Not enough to leave a child here,” Jonah responded.

The enigmatic looking baby had made their thoughts foggy, Amelia leaned over and she picked the child gently. Placing it in her arm, her eye resting on the little creature.

“Maybe it was a lady who just wanted to relieve herself the burden of a child”

“And I just happened to be the right person?”

“What would you have me say Jonah, we can’t just dumb it here to die, whoever did this must be lurking around the corner. Or worse might be a set up”

“Then let’s report it then, so it gets legalised that a baby is left in our care”

Jonah was panicking, “Amelia, we already in a lot of mess, ma wel is out there, he might be the one to set us up, what do you think?, he ran away after knocking you down, he might set this baby here, so we would be in trouble”

While Jonah was talking, Amelia played with the little baby whose eyes were now red.

“It must be hungry” she said, walking around the house looking for something to feed the little baby, and while she searched a little note fell from her arm.

“What?, what’s that?” Jonah ran towards the little card that fell from the little child, then read through it.

“Here,” he said to Amelia as he handed her the card.

“Whoever sent this child here knows me, it states right there that I should heal the child”

“What?” She stared at the card then back at Jonah.

“Please, heal my child, I beg of you, i can’t lose my baby, i know you can” Amelia read it out loud.

“It’s Maxwell. I know for sure, it has to be him, he knows about my abilities, it’s Maxwell” angered by the thoughts of Maxwell Jonah punched the wall.

“And you healed a group of women at the camp, and Maxwell isn’t the only one that knows about your power, he’s just the only person blackmailing you about it” Amelia said as she reached out for Jonah.

“Amelia”

“Jonah, let’s heal this child, it might be an internal illness, maybe it’s a lady’s whose child was left out, or a new refugee”

Jonah gave it a thought, the baby was harmless and he wouldn’t let a child die because of his anger, so he too the child from Amelia.

He needed to know what was wrong with the little child so he placed it on the bed, then unwrapped the child, that was when he realised it was a little girl with a crippled leg.

It was not a prank, she needed real help, there was a little sore on her body, and probably an accident. Jonah immediately felt sour for letting his anger overshadow him.

He placed his hands on the little girl, then started to heal her. He was always weak from healing too many people, and since her process required more energy, she had a broken leg, and so many sore, she seemed to have acquired an infection along the way.

So she was at the brink of dying, “Jonah placed a hand on the “little girl, he started from her legs, as he felt her bone come back together and heal, her skin had started healing when he felt a sudden halt in his strength.

The baby started shaking, she was having a convulsion amidst his session.

“What’s going on?”

“I have no idea!” Jonah said in a panic.

Soon the little girl became surprisingly calm, she wasn’t breathing again.

“Jonah” amelia gasps, “she isn’t breathing”

Jonah jittered in fright, “ I was healing her, it’s not possible, she can’t die”

“Jonah, she was already sick, maybe she was closer to death”

“No, she was full of life already Amelia, I could feel it”

Jonah regretted not taking her to the hospital. He felt guilt, maybe he was too weak to heal her, maybe he was the reason why this little girl didn’t get to experience the world, he deemed himself worthless as she had been here all along but he let his pride get in his way of healing this little girl.

“Jonah, she was sick,”

“And I had her all along, I would have saved her if I had cared a lot more than I did”

“We can’t do anything now” Amelia tried to console him, but Jonah who still held the child close to him wasn’t listening, he pressed her chest with his fingers, he tried to feel her energies if she had any life in her, but she was as lifeless as a doll.

“She was fine I swear” he placed her on the bed, then his ear on her chest.

“She can't be too weak, she was full of life, I could feel it”
