Chapter Fifty Six: Not A Prank
It was sounding so real yet she refused to believe it wasn't a prank, she must have feared him so much that she had begun to hallucinate, Amelia didn't turn like she desperately wanted to, she stood her ground, her legs were rooted to the floor, her mind went haywire.
She felt bile rise in her throat as she forced her mind to think of something new, she could feel his lurking presence behind her, it wasn't supposed to be real, it was too easley for him to come back home, how did she not hear him open the door? How long has it been here?
This question and many more stormed her mind as she forced herself to finally turn, just for her to meet her greatest demise, Maxwell was standing behind her, with his hands held behind his back, he paired his eyes at her, a slight smile plastered on his lips.
“You want to see him so badly, it's like an addiction, it has been barely twenty-four hours, and I can see how pale you have become, you look like a crank addict” he walked closer to her as he spoke, amelia dreaded this moment, she moved a step back again.
“What does he have that I don't?, I know for sure it isn't the face, he might be attractive but trust me when I say you could do better than that?, is it his body?, for Christ sake that man has a bad stench”
She wanted to tell him he didn't, that Jonah was a good man, he was not just a nobody, but the fear of what this unstable man would do to her stuck in her mind like glue, she could not bear to think of the possibilities of dying.
“You didn't even take the flowers I gave you”
“I did, it would be delivered to my house” she said in her defence but it meant nothing to the man before her.
“What else do you want to lie about?; that you loved it and you wished I had sent it earlier?, for f*ck sake Amelia!,” he yelled, with his veins popping on his forehead, he yelled even more.
“What more do I need to do for you, you grateful bitch!, I would f*cking give you everything, everything you want!, you just have to name it!, do you need the money!, I would get it for you!, what more!”
His hands shoved into his hair in frustration, he pulled the strands so hard that his face flushed with redness, Amelia prayed the floor would open and somehow she would sink inside, this might be her end, her eyes narrowed around her, she needed to hide something sharp behind her incase he tries to attack her, then she could use it on him.
But there was nothing within her reach that would suffice at that moment.
She cursed beneath her breath, she could not just run away like she solely wanted to do.
As Maxwell walked closer she could feel her heart beat increase dramatically, she had no resort, she had to fall back on her feet.
“Maxwell please” her hands were clasped together as she begged, she didn't want to explain herself anymore, she just wanted to come out alive.
“Don't beg me, you brought this upon yourself, you broke a deal”
“I just wanted to make sure he was okay, that's all I swear to god, please”
“I won't let you go like that, you insult me, ever since I told you how much you meant to me you constantly made me feel like a fool, like I was some sort of fool that you could just toss around, you chose a fuckin cleaner over me!, a damn janitor”
He began to lose the belt around his waist.
He was going to flog her, she knew he was a psychopath with some kind of obsession but this was the peak.
She wanted to run, her eyes narrowed to the door. After what had happened last night she knew she could not run, the house was automated, it would only take him a click on his phone to lick all the doors.
“What would our fellow workers say”
“Nothing, you said we would date for a week, what else do you want?, they are going to find out anyway”
“One week, after how you acted today?” he scoffed.
“You won't be serving me for a week, you would serve extra”
Amelia knew he was going to say this, she had thought about this a long time ago, and had tried avoiding it but once again he was a step ahead of her.
“What do you want from me, i have done all you want,”
“You love him, don't you?”
“Maxwell, I don't know if you gave him food, I just want to make sure he's alright, I don't trust you, he might be dead and I know you won't care” she stood her ground without providing answers to his question.
“You love him more than me, you love a cleaner”
“Did you need him?”
“Answer me! Do you love him!” He yelled.
Closing the gap between him and Amelia, Amelia moved backward but her back was against the wall now there was no place for her to move.
“Do you love him, this would be the last time I would ask you this”
“Yes” she muttered, all this while she had tried her best not to admit it, she didn't tell Jonah how much she liked him, she didn't tell him how much she thought of him when he was not there, she simply didn't want to accept it herself, all this while she had avoided the feeling.
“You disgust me”
Maxwell felt defeated… he didn't know what else to say, it was obvious she was already hopeless.
“I only came back tk make sure he's well, and has eaten, I know you wouldn't feed him, so I just wanted to make sure he's fine”
“He’s fine,” Maxwell said.
“How do you know that?, you didn't see him this morning, we did everything together, when did you have the chance to see him?”
“You are forgetting this is my house,” he said.
“Even though, It does not guarantee anything”
“He is well fed, personally I don't care about him, I wished he died the day he was born, but I know you care about him and that's why I fed him, if you want to check him out, you can, but on one condition”
Her moment of calmness withered right before her own eyes.
“What is it?” her curiosity had the best of her.
“Date me for a week extra, this time around you wont get this much freedom like I have given you now, if you have to pretend that you are obsessed with me just the way I am to you, then do it, don't hold back, and if you don't, I will have no other option that to di-set your lover.
“No!”
“The ball is in your court, make good choices now, or forever hold your peace”
“Fine”
Everything she feared came to pass, but at least she would know what Jonah was doing, and while she made sure he was doing just fine, she would find their way out of the country and out of danger where no one knows about him, or her.
“Now follow me shall we?” Maxwell said as she walked towards his room door, he didn't pull out a key from his pocket, rather he tapped the button on his phone and she heard the hinges of the door open, and then Maxwell pushed the door wide open.
The only way to access his house was to take his phone,
Amelia made a mental note about it, and when she was done with her midlife delusion, she snapped out of it then focused on where she was headed.
Down the path she followed she finally arrived at the cell just to find Jonah seated on the floor, he was no longer bleeding, he was clean but he was still asleep, she was finally convinced that something had happened to him.
“Did you drug him?” she asked.
Two times she has met him now he has been sleeping.
“Of course, what do you think? That I would let that blabber mouth stay awake?, never” Maxwell rled his eyes in exasperation, as he walked back.
“You have seen him now, you can come out, I don't like being around him”
Amelia could not pull her attention away from him, but with the looks of things she was doing everything to pull him out of that situation, he had been fed and cleaned up, she was certain he was awake, that was all she needed.
She sighed then walked back outside.
“There is a ball at my parent's house, your dress is on its way, and the makeup artist, so go and rest, you need it” Amelia didn't argue, she had been flagged down to nothing at that moment.
But it wasn't the end… not yet.
