The Rift
CHAPTER TEN
AVRIL
Ariel and I laughed at his question.
The knock came again louder this time.
"Break down the door, yes?" I said in a British accent. Ariel and I laughed afterwards.
"Breakfast is ready I have searched for you guys the whole place", Suzy's voice came from outside.
"Ooops, we completely forgot about dinner", I said.
"We will be out shortly", Ariel said.
"Jumai has asked me to come with you right away", she replied with a strong urge in her voice.
"Come in and drag us", Ariel said sarcastically.
"You don't have to insult me, I'd leave right away", she replied and we heard her footsteps walking away.
I and Ariel exchanged glances and burst out in an uproar of laughter holding our mouths in our palms.

My eyes were fixed on the clock, I couldn't concentrate on what was being taught. I hadn't had the chance to talk to Chris since he sent me a good morning message on Saturday that I didn't reply to.
I wanted to see Chris and tell him everything, I wanted to clear things up with him, and I wanted to let Chris know I wasn't mad at him. I was only busy and also trying to respect Sally's feelings.
I was always restless and wouldn't concentrate on anything else until my mind is completely cleared of a particular problem or something like it.
Maths was my worse subject so I didn't panic that I couldn't concentrate because even if I did I still wouldn't get anything from what was being taught.
I have tried a lot of times to practice maths with friends and alone yet I end up getting more and more confused.
Sally was the one to spend a lot of time teaching me maths, and although it took days I get to understand when she explains. Maths was the only subject Sally was good at and she was damn fucking good at it.
Sally always topped the maths class during exams and tests... Sally was always the first to understand any maths problem and would solve it correctly on the board. Sometimes I wished I had the gift to understand and solve maths as Sally did.
I kept my gaze on the wall clock, although sometimes I'd look out of the window... I badly wanted to see Chris, I was more eager to talk to him and hug him than I was to hear from Ariel about the new findings he mentioned earlier.
It took longer than usual for the 10 o'clock bell to ring. I breathed a big sigh of relief.
The maths professor rounded up and left the class with his bag.
I quickly placed my bag which I had intentionally packed up earlier under my table and closed it neatly.
We all moved out of the class in pairs, and alone.
I walked straight to Chris's class, I had to hurry before he left with his band.
Chris as the leader of the singing club at Young Talents High School was a very busy person and is loved by everyone.
All the girls in YTH wanted to have Chris for themselves. Everyone sang praises of Chris both male and female... Chris wasn't only loved by the girls but also by some guys, the gay guys also disturbed him a lot.
Although just like me Chris also had haters, a lot of guys hated him because they felt he was going to snatch their girlfriends.
I took in a deep sigh of relief on sighting Chris, he was still packing his bag when I walked in.
I walked to Chris and hugged him from behind for a moment before letting go.
"Hi Avril, you got me worried out of my ass, you didn't text and when I did you didn't even text back. I called you didn't respond and we didn't talk last week". He said turning to face me.
"I am sorry Chris, I'd tell you everything", I said and hugged him again this time from the front.
He returned the hug.
"I missed you so much," I said softly.
"I missed you more dear" he replied.
I pecked his cheek twice and he smiled in return.
"What happened to you?" He whispered in my ear.
I was about to answer when I sighted Ariel walking into the classroom angrily.
'what does he want?' I thought.
I quickly let go of Chris and stood in front of him.
"What are you doing with this boy?" He asked walking up to us angrily.
"You know Chris? Chris, do you know Ariel?"
I know Chris and Ariel saw each other at the dinner but it didn't seem like they know each other before then.
None of them gave me a reply, Chris pushed me gently to a corner and took two steps closer to Ariel.
"Why? Are you scared that I am going to bite your sister?" Chris asked Ariel.
I was completely lost, 'what in the hell is going on here? What were they both talking about?' I thought.
"I don't have a problem with whatever you do with your life, or whoever you choose to go out with but stay away from my sister!" Ariel barked.
I kept mute as I watched them both, Chris had this cute grin on his face while Ariel boiled in anger.
"I have a strong feeling you have a hand in what happened to my sister", Ariel said still boiling in anger.
Chris looked at me as if he wanted to see what happened to me like he wanted to confirm if I was okay or not.
"What happened to her? I have no idea", he replied putting both hands in his pocket.
"Avril, what happened to you?" He asked looking at me.
I turned away without giving him a reply.
"Do not put up that pretence you liar!" Ariel fired.
"I am lost, I am completely lost", Chris said.
"Why? I guess she didn't tell you she was attacked? I guess she didn't say anything to you", Ariel said.
Chris turned to me and scoffed, "she seems fine. I guess that was what she was about to say before you walked in. Besides what it is that happened why not go ahead and tell her why you think I have a hand in it, why hide it from her? Or better still just let my parents know, I guess this would be the best ever!!" Chris clapped and smiled to the corner of his lips.
Whatever it was they had should better be settled by them because I don't think I am ready to lose Chris because of Ariel.
I won't let Suzy or anyone else have him.
Both of them were breaking my heart, I asked Chris and Ariel what the problem was but no one was ready to give a reply, they just ignored me completely and continued with their lame argument.
"Are you going to tell me what the heck the problem is or I should keep watching you both like a complete moron?" I asked frustrated.
"Maybe you should ask your brother", Chris moved closer to me placing his hand on my shoulder. "I am as clueless as you are".
"Let go of her! Don't you dare lay your filthy hands on my sister like that!" Ariel said. He forcefully pushed Chris's hand off my shoulder.
Chris chuckled without uttering a word.
"Can you both stop this? I can go on my knees if you want, but please this silence of yours is killing me" I looked at both of them and then continued.
"You both can't stop talking yet you have said nothing exactly, what is going on? Why are you both acting like preschool kids?"
"Avril I swear to you I am as clueless as you are, I don't know what your brother is talking about", Chris said.
"But you both seem to be in a very serious argument and conflict, you both are responding to each other, you don't seem lost to me at all, you don't", I said.
"You still lie to her and pretend to love her?" Ariel asked.
"I truly have no either of what you are talking about Ariel and you know it", Chris said and Ariel chuckled.
"Stop it the both of you stop it!" I screamed at the top of my voice, but it was obvious they weren't ready to stop.
"Let's go!" Ariel said and dragged me out of the classroom.
"See ya later love" Chris shouted after us.
I was completely clueless and as confused as ever, I didn't know what it was Ariel and Chris had that they didn't want to get along.
Their conversations were not clear to me either. It was almost as if they spoke in parables.
Ariel dragged me away pulling my arms roughly, I wondered if he didn't care he was hurting me...
I followed after Ariel without uttering a word, but I asked lots of questions without getting any answers in my head.
