Chapter 36

Charlotte's POV
Even though my body wouldn't be seriously affected by the poison, I wished these bastards would design the taste of the poison better.
  "Damn, this shit tastes awful."
I mercilessly spat out the empty bottle of poison in my hand.
After Ronald saw me drink all the poison, he was like a cat whose tail had been stepped on, scared and surprised, almost jumping up on the spot.
"Charlotte, you fool! Why did you drink this bottle of poison?"
Ronald broke my mouth, and he tried to press my tongue with his fingers, thinking that I would then be able to spit out the poison .
"Father, please, give the antidote to Charlotte! Please!"
I couldn't believe that Ronald was asking Charlie for help for me at this moment.
"Ronald, you don't have to..." I tried to dissuade him.
But it was obviously for nothing.
Ronald put my dagger on Charlie's table, and I took advantage of the fact that they weren't looking, and I snatched it back.
Now it was my turn to threaten the bad guys with the dagger.
"Don't move! Or I'll kill this Charlie guy right now!"
I held the tip of the dagger against Charlie's neck, which made Ronald afraid to take another step towards me.
"Charlotte, I think you should calm down now!" Ronald emphasized to me gently.
"Fuck off! You guys, you're all assholes! Especially you, Charlie Carson! I'm going to kill you!"
I finally shouted out the words.
Mom, I can finally avenge you. I lamented.
Charlie suddenly laughed, and his laughter resounded throughout the den.
"Kalay, your daughter is just like you!"
   Charlie muttered.
Then Charlie looked up and his eyes fell on a portrait on the wall.
I followed his gaze. On the pale yellow parchment, a young girl was drawn. The girl had the same lake blue eyes as I had as well as blonde hair.
If I hadn't been sure I hadn't been drawn this picture, I would have almost thought it was me.
Charlie was still gazing at the painting with a smile on his face.
Look closely, the girl in this painting has the same color eyes as me. But she and I don't look the same.
She, like my mother, Kalay Watson.
"This seems to be my mother when she was young!"
  I exclaimed.
"Why do you have a portrait of my mother?" I questioned Charlie in a loud voice.
Charlie closed his eyes, and a small smile lifted the corners of his mouth.
"You're Charlotte Watson, and Kalay Watson is your mother, right?"
  Charlie asked me.
"That's right, but why would you know that?" I asked.
Charlie didn't answer my question, and I expected a sly, remorseful look from him.
  But he didn't.
Charlie shook his head emotionally, "I've been waiting for more than ten years, and this day has finally come."
  Charlie smiled gratefully.
"I know why. Because you're the murderer who killed my mother!"
I plunged the tip of my dagger into Charlie's neck.
  "Charlotte!"
Ronald let out a roar, he looked like he was about to go crazy.
"Charlotte, I'm sorry about your mother, Kalay's death. But please believe me, I am not his murderer!"
  Charlie explained patiently.
"Why do you think I killed your mother?" "Charlotte, this is nonsense!"
"I don't believe it! You're a liar! I know the last person my mother saw before she died was you!"
  I retorted excitedly to Charlie.
"Do you think I don't know about your insidious, ridiculous schemes?"
  I said with a sneer.
I held the necklace containing my mother's memories in my hand and then let the memories inside the necklace play automatically.
A scene emerged in the air, although there was no sound, but the mother's desperate feeling I could feel completely tangible.
The last scene was Charlie's face appearing in the mother's sight.
Charlie's black hair flashed, and he turned into a black wolf and then pounced on my mother.
Finally my mother let out a scream and the scene turned black to end.
"With all this, Charlie, you still want to weasel out of it?"
I held the necklace tightly, Charlie's expression became very sad.
"Charlotte, dear. I am not your mother's murderer. I felt Kalay's side as fast as I could, when I saw that guy actually sneak up behind Kalay at that time."
Charlie bowed his head in disappointment.
"I'm sorry, Charlotte, even though I finally killed the damn murderer, I was still a step too slow, and Kalay's neck was broken by that wolf."
I listened sadly, I couldn't believe that my mother was treated like that.
"I assume you're telling the truth, but who am I to believe what you're saying?"
I had reason to suspect that Charlie was lying to me, but I had no proof.
"Because I know that you were sent to the human world after you lost your mother."
What Charlie said surprised me greatly inside. I obviously hadn't told anyone that I had spent some time in the human world.
"How do you know these things?" I asked.
"Not only do I know that you spent time in the human world, I also know that the address of the place where you lived in the human world was No. 35, Maidenhaven Road.
There are many books about medicine in the house where you lived. And most of those books are from your mother."
Charlie looked at me, and I was too surprised to speak.
"Charlie Carson, who the hell are you?"
Charlie's face was filled with sadness.
"Charlotte, I'm the one who sent you to the human world. This is the last thing your mother begged me to do for her. Your mother and I, Kalay to me, she was the one I loved dearly."
I now believe that Charlie was not the enemy who killed my mother. If she wanted to kill my mother, then it was only right that he should kill me too.
"Why have I never heard my mother talk about you?" I asked, puzzled.
"Because there was some misunderstanding between Kalay and me and Kalay wouldn't come to me for help. I later learned that she needed help, but she wouldn't ask for it..."
Charlie looked at me helplessly, "Charlotte, you and your mother are exactly the same, stubborn and strong . Don't like to ask people to help you."
"Then why don't you tell me that you saved me and helped me to stay in the human world?"
Charlie smiled, "Charlotte, the less people know about such dangerous things, the better. You see, I didn't even tell my son, Ronald, about you."
Ronald nodded and said to me, "Yes, father never told me this about you.
I only know that five years ago, he left the black night pack for about half a month or so continuously. But father didn't say what he went out to do when he came back."
A feeling of dawning realization filled my whole body. The complexity of the information made me very dizzy.
"But when I sent you to the human world , I was also very relieved that I couldn't let you go. That's why I have been secretly and personally supervising your life and studies."
Charlie frowned and said to me.
"However, your state is very reassuring to me. You're as self-disciplined and excellent as Kalay."
"Then why are there many books belonging to my mother in the house where I live? Did you move the books there?" I asked suspiciously.
"No, Charlotte, because it was your mother's house. When your mother was young, she also lived in Human Time for a while.
But then she had to leave there again, and since then the house has been empty ."
By this point, I had to believe that my mother's killer was not Charlie.
I sagged on my knees beside the chair, now like a kite with a broken string, losing its purpose and direction.
"It has been revenge that has brought me the courage to live and the motivation to move forward, what should I do now?"
I bowed my head in pain, who had killed my mother? Now I had lost the clue again.
"Charlotte, I miss your mother so much. You have to believe me, I want to find Kalay's killer more than anyone else in this world."
Charlie said reassuringly, patting me on the shoulder.
"But I don't know anything at all about the killer." I buried my head into my chest in frustration as Ronald knelt down and put his arms around me.
"Charlotte, it's okay. All these years, I've been following the companions of Kalay's killer back then. They all have the same tattoo."
Charlie handed me a piece of parchment, and I took it to peruse it.
"So it's this tattoo!" I exclaimed.
The pattern on the parchment was the same tattoo pattern that the group of kidnappers I met at the Wind Pack border had tattooed on their bodies.
"You've seen these patterns?" Charlie asked.
"Yes, I've seen a group of kidnappers at the Wind Pack border, and that group of kidnappers had this pattern on them!"
I gripped the parchment tightly. This might be a very important clue.
"Father! Charlotte has taken your poison!" Ronald asked Charlie anxiously.
Charlie's expression began to become nervous. He began to rummage through the cabinet, searching.
Finally, Charlie pulled out a teal glass bottle and shoved it in my hand.
Charlie emphasized to me, "Hurry! Drink it now, Charlotte, or you'll go rigid and die within a minute!"
"Don't worry about me, Mr. Charlie. This poison doesn't affect me at all."
I refused the antidote Charlie handed me, "My body is adapted to all kinds of poisons. This poison is just plain water to me."
Charlie looked at me in surprise, "Now I'm even more sure that you are Kalay's daughter."
I caught a glimpse of Charlie's neck bleeding from the wound I had just intentionally inflicted on him.
"I'm sorry, Mr. Charlie. I think you should deal with the wound on your neck right now." I pointed to Charlie's neck.
"Let me clean your wound, Mr. Charlie." I found the gauze and iodine.
"It's okay, it's just a small wound. I'll just take care of it myself."
Although Charlie refused my help, I insisted on helping him with the wound.
My skillful movements drew Charlie's admiration.
"Charlotte, your movements are really very skilled and professional."
Ronald picked up my dagger, then held it in his hand and carefully stroked it, surveying it.
"Charlotte, is this your dagger?" Ronald asked.
And I didn't even notice the look on his face when he said this question.
