Chapter 38

Charlotte's POV
Ronald and I went to Charlie's study after dinner, as promised.
"Mr. Charlie, I would like to know how you and my mother met. She never mentioned your name to me."
Charlie walked up to the portrait on the wall, and he gazed fondly at my mother.
"Charlotte, your mother was the strongest, most somewhat charming woman I've ever met."
Charlie was lost in memories, "You know Charlotte, my first meeting with Kalay was in the middle of the frontier forest in the middle of a blackout pack."
"At that time, I was only the heir of the Black Night Pack, and my father was the alpha of the Black Night Pack. I followed the alpha's instructions to go to the border forest for the annual border patrol."
"That day, I was searching the woods with my partner when I heard a baby's cry from afar. As I approached, I saw a woman in a coma with a small, shirt-covered package next to her. It was from inside the package that the cries came."
I said hesitantly, "Maybe this baby is me."
Charlie nodded, "Yes, your mother was covered in blood at that time, and she had almost lost her breath. But you couldn't stop crying, and you were healthy then. Maybe God had mercy on you and let me meet Kalay."
"I brought Kalay back to the black night pack with you and got a doctor to treat you."
"And what happened to Mrs. Kalay?" Ronald asked.
"I had thought she was a child of the Black Night Pack, but after Kalay woke up, she told me she was a wanderer.
And she didn't accidentally walk into the border forest of the Black Night Pack. kalay was being chased and she had to escape into the border forest of the Black Night Pack."
"Then who tried to kill my mother?"
I asked anxiously.
"Charlotte, I also once asked your mother this question. But she wouldn't tell me anything at that time. She seemed very sad."
Charlie shook his head as he gently stroked the portrait.
"Charlotte, did Kalay ever tell you anything about your father?"
Charlie asked.
"No, Mr. Charlie. I don't really know who my father was. But my mother has told me that my father loves me very much."
I replied, "I asked my mother about my father, and she only said that when I grew up to a certain age, I would understand. But, until she died, I didn't know who my father was."
Charlie was silent for a moment, "Charlotte, perhaps this may surprise you, but I think you have a right to know this."
"Kalay asked me to send her back to the Shadowpack six months after she came to the Darkpack. i thought at the time that she was a Shadowpack sub. I thought she was going home."
"I suggested that she take you with her, but Kalay refused. When we arrived at Shadowpack, it happened to be the first day of the Shadowpack alpha's wedding.
The streets were very busy, and the alpha's place was filled with all kinds of wishes. I noticed that Kalay's face was filled with sadness at this point, and her eyes showed despair. She begged me to take her away and never come back here. I promised her."
"Why was Kalay so sad?" I asked, puzzled
"Charlotte, if you were carrying Ronald's child and I did not approve of you and Ronald being together. And asked Ronald to marry another girl, I would have to get rid of you along with the baby. What kind of emotions would you feel?"
My brain answered without a doubt: "Of course, to leave here forever. Because I will hate you all forever."
"Charlotte, your mother had the same thoughts as you. After she came back from the Shadowpack, it was as if she had lost her soul. She didn't talk to me for a long time, and she wouldn't communicate with anyone.
Kalay did nothing but spend her days taking care of you, sitting in front of a window where she could see the sunset and staring."
"What made her so upset, Mr. Charlie? What did you go through at Shadowpack?" I asked.
"Your mother didn't tell me exactly why, but my guess is that it had something to do with the higher-ups at Shadowpack."
Charlie frowned, his gaze flickering. I stepped forward and looked at my mother's portrait with him.
The portrait showed my mother smiling happily, as if she had all the joy in the world.
Charlie looked over at me, and his frown gradually relaxed.
"Kalay's slump was broken when you learned to call out to your mother. I've never seen her smile so warmly. Your growth has brought Kalay endless joy and happiness, Charlotte."
Charlie said, "After that, Kalay was like a new soul, the once sad and desperate Kalay was replaced. She was constantly fu*ked up about your life, Charlotte. when you were five, she offered me to make a shelter for you in the human world. Because she always felt she would suddenly leave at some point , she had a premonition that she would not be able to take care of you until you were an adult."
I lowered my head, and all the details of my life with my mother in Wind Pack came to my mind.
"In fact, my mother's prophecy came true. She died when I was thirteen years old. I spent five years alone in the human world."
Ronald took my hand and reassured me, "Charlotte, you must have been very lonely alone in human society."
Charlie looked at me, "Charlotte, I thought you would spend your life peacefully in the human world, knowing that I had arranged for your time in the human world very well. You don't even need to go back to the werewolf world to take risks. You just enjoy what you have in the human world. Just leave it to me to find the killer."
I shook my head firmly, "Mr. Charlie, I have been planning for five years to find my mother's killer.
It is absolutely impossible to ask me to give up. Besides, I don't think my mother wants to see her child as a silly girl who only runs away and enjoys indulging in lust."
Charlie sighed, "Charlotte, you know this is a very dangerous move. However, I see your mother in you. Her wisdom and foresight , and her resilience in the face of adversity, all fascinate me.
I think I fell deeply in love with Kalay a long time ago, but she rejected my advances when you were six years old and left the Black Night Pack.
We hadn't spoken since then, and it wasn't until she sent me an unsolicited message before she died that I learned she was in a great deal of trouble, and that she had even given her life for it."
Charlie's eyes were filled with sadness, and he clutched the edge of the portrait as if he were holding on to all the love he felt for Kalay.
"Don't be sad, Charlie, I will avenge my mother."
I reassured him.
"Charlie, I didn't stop the man who killed your mother in time. This is my eternal, heartfelt pain and guilt."
Charlie said in despair.
"Mr. Charlie, I don't think my mother blames you for this. It wasn't your fault, and I'm sure you did everything you could."
I looked at Mr. Charlie's guilt-ridden face and my stomach lurched with pain.
My empathy was so strong that I could truly feel Mr. Charlie's despair at losing the love of his life.
"Charlotte, your mother, in her last moments of death, she asked me to send me to the human world. It is relatively safer there than the werewolf world. I wanted you to stay there forever, happily. But then, you came back."
I held Ronald's hand, and Ronald looked at me encouragingly. Charlie and I looked at each other firmly.
"Mr. Charlie , I am not going to give up ."
"Well , let me tell you , after I sent you to the human world , I went back to Wind Pack wanting to inquire the truth. A mysterious man told me that he saw your mother's murderer in contact with Wind Pack executives."
"Wind Pack again?" I said, holding back my anger at the many murders that had taken place in Wind Pack.
"Yes, the man's face was masked so that I couldn't see his real face. But from the accent he spoke with, he looked like he was from Wind Pack."
"And did he reveal anything else afterwards?" I asked anxiously.
Charlie shook his head in disappointment, "I was thinking the same thing as you. After I said I wanted more information, he started blackmailing me into paying him a considerable amount of money."
"And did you give it to him later?" I asked.
"I didn't have enough money with me, so I had to return to the Blackout Pack , which caused me to miss the final truth."
"Why?"
"After I got the money and returned to Wind Pack, I wasn't able to find this mystery man in."
I said in surprise, "How could that be?"
"It did, Charlotte. it was all like I was imagining things, and no matter what I did, I couldn't find this mystery man who was trying to give me information."
