Chapter 42

Charlotte' POV
Early the next morning, inside a hotel in Shadow Pack.
"Charlotte, Gary asked us to check out the body of that dead Beta at Shadow Pack."
Ronald shook my shoulder and whispered in my ear.
"Good." I rubbed my eyes, healing Ronald's wounds took a lot of my energy. It made me become a little drowsy.
"Are you okay Charlotte, why don't you just rest in your room and I'll go check the cause of Beta's death alone, okay?"
Ronald said worriedly.
I knew Ronald was doing this for my own good, but I didn't want to fall behind Ronald.
"No, you wait for me, no I'll put on some clothes and clean up and go over there."
I quickly got up and fixed my clothes, then stood in front of Ronald. "I'm packed, let's go now."
Rick brought over two horses, "Miss Charlotte, Mr. Ronald, this is for you, Beta's house is a little far from here. It will be faster on horseback."
Ronald nodded his thanks to Rick, "Thank you. But we only need one horse and that's all we need."
I looked at him quizzically, "Why, Ronald, don't you want to walk there?"
Ronald smiled and shook his head, the handsome smile on his face catching my attention. "Charlotte, I don't want to ride separately from my fiancée, I have to keep her safe, don't I?"
Ronald led the horse to me and he gestured for me to mount first. "Ladies first, Miss Charlotte."
I was amused by his serious look, "As you wish, Mr. Ronald."
Ronald expertly rolled onto his horse, he sat behind me, then extended his arms and firmly encircled me.
"Sit tight, Miss Fiancee. I'm going to start speeding up!"
Ronald exhaled right next to my ear. "Miss Charlotte, why are your ears turning so red?"
I shyly, even became a little embarrassed. "Stop it, Ronald."
The rhythmic sound of horses' hooves came from beneath us, and Ronald accelerated the speed of his horse, which gradually turned into a wild gallop, and we rushed into the darkness like lightning.
I came to the house of the dead Beta. His house still had all the settings from the crime scene.
Rick followed us and introduced us to everything in the place.
"Charlotte, this is for you." Ronald handed me a pair of gloves.
"It seems that you still remember the habit of checking the scene to keep it clean and tidy." I said to Ronald.
"Of course, I always remember."
I stepped carefully inside the room, and a sour smell filled the air.
"Ronald, do you smell a particular odor?" Ronald paced around the room, he sniffed carefully after hearing my question.
"Yes, there is a sour smell."
I searched for the scent and a bouquet of purple tulips bloomed in a vase in the corner.
I picked up a bunch of tulips, then took out a reagent and squeezed a drop on top of the petals. Instantly, the petals turned black.
"Ronald, this bouquet of flowers, I think there is something wrong." I cautiously put the flowers back into the vase.
Ronald called over to Rick, "Seal this bouquet, we need to take them back."
"Okay, Mr. Ronald." Rick took out a clear Ziploc bag and put the purple tulips in it.
"Ronald, I suspect that this Beta and the gamma that died in the Blackout Pack died because of the same reason."
I whispered to Ronald, but of course, it was just my tentative guess.
"I still need to examine the body of this Beta so that my suspicions can be corroborated."
"Good. We'll go to the morgue now."
Rick led us to an ice cellar, which turned out to be the Shadow Pack's morgue.
Rick opened the door and started walking up stair after stair. I looked around attentively. The walls were built up with thick ice, and this place kept the bodies from rotting in the summer from the heat.
"It's cold in here." I shivered and uttered the words. In here, even one more word would cost me a lot of heat.
Besides, I'm not really wearing much clothing today.
A warmth came from my back, I looked back and Ronald took off his jacket and covered my body.
I hastily refused, "No, Ronald, you should keep your clothes for yourself!"
The expression on Ronald's face was so cold that I couldn't refuse it, and I thought it impossible that I would succeed in refusing him.
"Put it on and look at the air you're spitting out turn white. And the thin clothes you're wearing today."
We finally arrived next to Beta's body. I put on my gloves and started examining it carefully.
Ronald's brow was furrowed and he looked at the body with disgust.
"He should have experienced an excessive amount of, intense sex before he died. But for some reason, his heart went into cardiac arrest in a short period of time."
I finished examining the body and said to Ronald, who expertly pulled out his notebook to take notes.
"Look at his fingernails, there is residual purple powder." I carefully scraped the purple powder off with a cotton swab.
"Ronald, help me bring the reagent over." I held out my hand to Ronald, and he tacitly handed me the glass bottle of reagent.
"Thank you, dear." I smile at him.
I dropped the reagent on the purple powder, and in a flash, the purple powder turned into a black liquid.
"Sure enough!"
I breathed out easily and said to Ronald.
"I've figured out what's going on. Now, let's go back!" I noticed that Ronald's lips had begun to turn purple, a harbinger of low body temperatures.
Rick hurriedly led Ronald and me out of the cold cellar.
We came outside and the warmth shone on our bodies. I hurriedly put my clothes over Ronald's body, which enabled him to raise his body temperature a bit.
Ronald and I hugged each other, and I hoped to warm Ronald's cold body with the warmth of my body.
After a while, the color of Ronald's lips finally regained its old redness.
"I'm all right now, don't worry, Charlottes."
Ronald patted my head and reassured me.
Still unsure, I cupped his face in my palms as I couldn't stop muttering, "This damned morgue. I'll never let you in there a second time."
Ronald left a kiss on my cheek, and I could almost feel the cold, wet warmth of his lips.
"I dripped the reagent on the purple tulip residue under his fingernails, and the reagent showed up black in color. Do you remember that the gamma that died in Blackout Pack also died because of the poison in the flowers."
Ronald nodded to me, "Yes, according to you, they both died because of the same reason. It's possible that the killer is also the same person."
"That's right. This potion is hard to detect and is an excellent deadly poison. It will disappear in about a week's time. If we come a little later, we may not be able to find this poison."
It's really frightening, but why would the killer want to kill a Beta?
There were victims of different levels in several Pack. There must be similarities between them, only we haven't found the truth yet.
"Ronald, I once checked, to make this poison, there is an ingredient which can only grow in the acidic soil of Wind Pack. Except Wind Pack has this kind of acidic soil, no other place can produce this ingredient."
"Then we'd better go to Wind Pack quickly so we can find a way to make this poison. Maybe we'll even meet the killer."
Ronald said expectantly.
"Good, then let's go find Gary. tell him about all this."
After Ronald and I returned to the Shadow Pack, Alpha's place Rick told us that Gary had to go take care of some work stuff and he couldn't come over for a while.
"Okay." I said. "I'll write up a report on what we've investigated and then I'll ask you to give it to Mr. Gary."
I said to Mr. Rick.
"No problem, Miss Charlotte." Mr. Rick agreed readily.
After finishing investigating the death of Beta of ShadowPack, Ronald and I planned to take time to go around the street.
"Charlotte, you know what? The reason I went to Wind Pack in the first place was that I received a message from the slave trading organization of the Dark Pack. Their message said that there will be a lot of slaves will be sold in Wind Pack recently."
Ronald said to me clearly.
"I see. Then it seems we made the right choice in deciding to go to Wind Pack. Combined with the information we now know, Wind Pack has quite a stash of information."
I began to look forward to the day I would return to Wind Pack. To be honest, I hadn't been back in a long time. As ally, the memories of working at Wind Pack were still very fond.
"No need to be in such a hurry, dear. This is the Shadow Pack, and didn't your mother once have close contact with the top brass here?"
Yeah, my mother probably hasn't been here since her sad back pain.
"Let me walk you around the place, Charlotte," Ronald bowed his head, his eyes revealing concern.
I nodded, "Today is, in fact, my mother's birthday."
Ronald's face shows surprise when I say this. "Today?"
"Yes." I said.
"You must miss Kalay," Ronald hugged me and I buried my head in his arms. the special smell of clean lemon and vanilla on Ronald's body allowed me to calm down from my sadness.
I sighed in his arms and said, "I'm not dead, it's just that when Kalay was alive, I used to make a walnut cake by hand on her birthday. My mother's favorite cake was the one I made."
Tears streamed down the corners of my eyes and Ronald gently wiped them away with his fingertips.
"I'll be with you from now on, and I'll make you a walnut cake. I swear!" Ronald kissed the corners of my eyes, and the love and tenderness he revealed in his eyes, for me, made me forget for a moment the pain that death had caused me.
"Get out of the way!" A man yelled and pushed Ronald out of the way. The man yanked me into his arms and a heavy smell of tobacco filled my nostrils.
Ronald was now like a lion in a frenzy as he tugged at my hand in a deadly attempt to drag me back into his arms.
"What the hell! Who the hell are you? Let go of Charlotte!" Ronald questioned the man loudly.
At this point I didn't know what was happening. This strange and weird man dragged me into his arms and said nothing to let go of my hand to let me go.
He wasn't trying to hurt me, I somehow had that feeling. He was just acting like a domineering but unintelligent little child who wouldn't allow anyone to take me away from him.
"Get away from her!" He threatened the ones around me, trying to take me away from me.
I gestured to Ronald not to provoke this strange man, and Ronald looked at me worriedly and sniffed, "Are you okay, Charlotte?"
"I'm fine, he's not going to hurt me. Don't you worry!" I waved my hand at Ronald and gestured for him to take a few steps back.
"Well, you take care of yourself, this guy looks crazy!" Ronald said helplessly, but he still chose to trust me.
