Chapter 40

Charlotte' POV
Charlie ordered Ronald and I to be called into the study. I saw the serious look on Tyler's face, and I guessed that something might have happened to Pack again.
Sure enough, Charlie handed me a red-covered document.
I took the document and the cover was bolded with black notes that said expedited.
"What's this?" I asked.
"It's a special document used to ask for help between Pack." Ronald explained.
"Let's see, what does this say exactly."
I was just about to turn it over and read it when Charlie told me.
"No need to look through it, it's a distress message from the Alpha of the Shadow Pack. Their Pack's Beta has been killed.
If it was a normal Beta there would be no need to use the inter-Pack distress file.
This dead Alpha was the most senior Beta of the Shadow Pack.
This time, the sudden killing of Beta did have a huge impact in the Pack."
I calmly thought, "Maybe we should go to the Shadow Pack to search. Besides, my mother also had contact with the senior management of Shadow Pack.
Maybe if I go, there will be some gain about my mother's experience."
Charlie nodded, "That's why I asked you and Ronald to come over. I want you to visit the Shadow Pack and investigate and learn more about the slave trade organization."
"Good, then I'll leave instantly."
Tyler brought us two horses.
Ronald and I got on the prepared horses and sped off in the direction of Shadow Pack.
Ronald held out his hand and pointed to a dense forest in front of us and said.
"This forest is its border forest."
I see, no wonder it looks very eerie. My years of experience gave me a premonition that I would encounter danger here.
I had to raise my voice to warn Ronald, "Honey, I think the environment here is a bit confusing, this forest is a bit sinister."
I looked around warily, gripping my dagger tightly.
Ronald didn't have much to worry about, as he held his horse with a relaxed expression.
"Charlotte, I think you're being too sensitive right now. This is already the Shadow Pack's territory. If someone is sneaking up on us here, then he must be crazy."
I wiggled my lips, I was going to explain. But looking at the very relaxed expression on Ronald's face, I didn't want to spoil his good mood.
"Well, actually, it's a nice view for a picnic."
I looked up at the tree tops, the tall trees topped with countless lush branches and leaves, and they blocked out the sunlight.
It was nearing night, and the path through the woods was very dim at this point.
My heart began to beat inexplicably wildly, and this oppressive environment made my nerves unusually tense.
"Ronald, let's ride faster. I've always felt that these woods are very strange."
I tightened the reins and urged the horse underneath me to speed up.
Ronald looked at me suspiciously, "Okay. I'll do as you say. Actually, I wanted you to have a good stroll here. Because Shadow Pack's border forest's very famous, it is a very popular attraction."
I was a little touched by Ronald's special heart, and he diluted my fear of this forest.
"Let's come back here when everything is settled. Honey."
Ronald and I smiled at each other, then silently picked up our pace.
A gust of wind blew and the horse beneath me was frightened. It started to become anxious and kept spinning in place.
"Hey! Hey, man! Stop spinning in place, we should hurry up!"
I patted my horse's neck and tried to reassure him.
With my efforts, my horse's mood finally settled down.
"Let's go! It's almost dark!"
Ronald said to me. He was a good rider, so his horse did not develop much agitation under his command.
We were about to leave when a harsh scream came a short distance behind me.
"Look out, Charlotte!"
Ronald jumped from his horse behind me and wrapped his arms around my back.
"Damn!" He let out a muffled grunt. It was as if something had hit him.
I checked him anxiously, "Ronald, what's wrong with you? Don't scare me!"
Ronald's head was down and he was clenching his teeth in a death grip.
I put my hand to his back, and a cold dart plunged straight into his back near his heart.
Ronald's body was trembling with pain. I felt to help him off the horse and then found a tree for him to sit down.
I pulled out my dagger and looked around alertly. All the while, I stopped Ronald's bleeding.
"Charlotte..." Ronald's face turned very white in a short time, which was due to the fact that he had lost too much blood.
"Damn! I left in such a hurry today and didn't bring any medicine to stop the bleeding."
I tried to keep Ronald conscious.
"Ronald! Don't sleep! Snap out of it!"
I tried to pull the dart out, but the tip of the dart was already deep in the flesh. If I pulled the dart out now, Ronald would definitely bleed a lot.
This would definitely put his life in danger.
"Ronald! I love you, baby, you can't die like this!"
I watched in despair as Ronald gradually lost consciousness and his lips became bloodless.
I leaned him gently against a tree, and then I dangled my hand over the wound on his back.
A green glow gathered from within my palm, and a steady stream of green light pooled inside Ronald's wound.
Visible to the naked eye, Ronald's wound was stopping bleeding. After a minute or so, his wound had begun to form a red scab.
I concentrated my mind and felt my connection to the plants around me.
Like drawing oxygen from water, I drew on the energy of the surrounding plants and poured it into Ronald's wound. This allowed his wound to heal in a short period of time.
I placed my hand on Ronald's forehead and the green glow in my hand gradually turned white.
Before the light disappeared, Ronald's eyes opened.
"Charlotte? What are you doing?" Ronald looked at me in surprise.
I was very tired by this time, but still steeled myself to respond to Ronald.
"As you can see, you are healed by me."
I withdrew my hand that had been placed on his forehead.
Then, I tore a strip of cloth from my body and helped him bandage the wound. Otherwise the wound would have split open after the strenuous exercise he had experienced.
This was not beneficial to Ronald's health.
"Charlotte, what is that magical glow in your hand just now?"
Ronald's spirit had become very good by now, and he held my hand and asked me very excitedly.
"It's my healing ability, innate."
I watched helplessly as he scratched at my hand, like a curious cat.
"Can you show me one more time you just did that?" Ronald looked at me with an expectant expression.
I shook my head wearily, "I'm sorry, you're hurt badly and it has taken a lot of energy for me to heal you."
I paused for a moment, "I'm sorry, but I need you to keep my secret.
Because I promised my mother I couldn't show my powers in front of anyone but her."
Ronald nodded firmly, "I won't tell anyone else."
Ronald picked up the dart that had stabbed him in the back from the ground. He picks the dart up and looks at it carefully into the light.
"Charlotte, I think the pattern on this dart looks familiar."
Ronald ripped a piece of cloth from his body, then wrapped the dart in the cloth and put it in his arms.
"Take the dart back with you so you can look up the information and study it carefully."
I nodded , "I agree."
Ronald held my shoulders as he stood up.
"You don't look in very good shape, dear." I said to him worriedly.
"I'm fine, I'm much better now than I was when I was hurt earlier. I wonder where this guy who tried to kill me is hiding now?"
Ronald mounted his horse and we prepared to leave the area quickly.
I suddenly realized that Ronald had blocked that dart for me in order to protect me. So that murderer was actually targeting me!
Many cold sweats appeared on my back in an instant. Usually, murderers choose to return to the scene of the crime in order to admire their masterpieces.
A nervous look appeared on Ronald's face, "You also realize that something is not right, don't you?"
I said to Ronald.
"That's right, Charlotte, watch your side!"
Ronald drew his weapon, he tightened the reins, and we both rode along
There was a sharp whistle above our heads. I quickly looked up as a huge dark shadow obscured my view.
"Charlotte! Look out!" Ronald wrapped his arms around me and we quickly jumped off our horses.
The dark shadow put an attack towards my horse. My horse let out a high-pitched cry and its forelimbs had to fall to its knees because of its injuries. The horse's blood splashed out in all directions like a fountain.
"If it wasn't for you, I would have ended up just like this horse. Thank you, Ronald," I shook his hand, and Ronald shook his head at me.
"No need to say thank you to me, it's my duty to protect you."
I unfolded a smile at him, then surveyed the black shadow. I couldn't even be sure if it was a werewolf.
"Hey! Who sent you?" I asked it.
It was as if it was asleep; not only did it not answer my question, I could not feel any presence of life in its body.
"Is this guy dead?" Ronald tried to go up and check it out.
"Don't go! There's something strange about this guy!" I warned Ronald.
This dark figure was wearing a huge, black cloak. Its features were hidden under the hood, and I couldn't see what it looked like, let alone see the expression on its face.
It held up a huge scythe, like a grim reaper.
I shouted at it twice, and it acted as if it didn't hear me.
I was surprised to find that this strange creature began to move.
Its hand lifted slowly, like a broken gear beginning to turn. Its movements had an indescribable strangeness to them.
It staggered to its feet, holding its long scythe in both hands, and it began to attack us like a snake.
Ronald and I dodged to either side and then reversed our bodies. I deftly ripped off its hood and it had to show its face.
