BE BRAVE SON
CHAPTER 44: BE BRAVE SON
~ Gabriel’s POV~
I screamed and tore at the seats of the SUV. I punched out the window to my right and turned to look for something else to destroy.
“Gabe!” Tanner yelled. “Calm down man, you're going to hurt Harper.” At his words I looked down at Harper still unconscious in the seat next to me. I dropped my head into my hands.
“That mother fucker! I’ll kill him! If it’s the last thing I do, I will kill him!” I clenched my fists so hard my claws extended and brought blood. I haven't felt my father’s life expire yet. We are far enough away that I didn’t have to worry about being caught so easily now. My father is a strong alpha. He loves his pack; he has done what he felt was necessary tonight. I never questioned my father’s actions. He always did what was best for the pack. I just wish things would have happened differently. I thought. I gasped as I felt like I was punched in the chest and knocked breathless.
“NO! That son of a bitch!” My dad's connection was severed. This could only mean one thing. “He’s dead! My father is dead!” I screamed and tore at the seats of the SUV again.
“Gabe! Gabe! Get it together man. I know this is devastating, but Harper is right next to you. She needs you right now, and your pack needs you.” Realization fell on me. I placed my head into my hands once again. I have been taking on more alpha responsibilities lately in preparation of taking my father's place. I didn’t want it to happen like this, but it has. Tanner is right, I have to be strong for my pack and for Harper. “Gabe, how the hell did you get out?” I thought about his question. “I mean were you just sitting on the couch when the fight broke out? You just picked up Harper and walked out the front door.” He asked me. If only he really knew what happened...
***FLASHBACK***
~ Still Gabriel’s POV~
“Harper! What’s happening?” I had just told her I love her. She seemed happy, then she fell to the floor. She looked like she was in a lot of pain. I have to get to her! I pulled at my chains. “Fuck! Harper, hang on baby.” Then her body stretched out like she was laying on a bed and she floated into the air. She was encircled by a light blue light. Her body levitated into the air. What’s happening! Just then a surge of power shot through me. I threw my head back and my body stiffened. The only thing holding me up were my shackles. My teeth clenched as it felt like electricity was coercing through my body, wave after wave. What’s happening to me! Whatever the force was, it stopped. I stood straight up; my body felt charged. Like I wasn’t me anymore, but better. I looked back over to Harper; I have to get to her. Frustrated, I pulled at my chains again. This time when I did, it felt like my body was charged with static and it flowed through my hands. I ripped the chains straight out of the walls with no effort. I looked at my wrists and broke the shackles from them one at a time. What. The. Hell! I looked at my hands. It literally looked like static was coming from them.
I turned back to Harper.
“Hold on baby, I'm coming!” I quickly moved to the cell bars and pried them apart. The wolfsbane never fazed me. I heard stomping down the hallway of the dungeon.
“Get back in your cell you!” I turned to the guy running toward me.
“Make me, fucker!” He looked at me. His eyes grew wide, but he kept walking toward me. I don’t have time for this. I have to get to Harper and get out of here. I didn’t wait for the guy to get to me. I shot over to him, grabbing him by the head with both hands. The guy couldn’t even react before I broke his neck. I ran back to Harper’s cell. I’ll have to have a wider space to walk out of this cell with her. I placed both my hands on the cell door and pulled it right while pushing against the wall with my left foot. It wasn't long before I heard a grinding metal sound and a loud pop. The cell door broke open. I walked inside. I stopped when I made it to Harper. She was beautiful, her hair was floating all around her. I couldn’t take long. I gently touched her. “Harper, baby I am here. I am getting you out of here.” I wrapped both of my arms around her and pulled her into me. She still didn’t wake up. I moved her into the bridal position in my arms and walked out of her cell. The main cell door was left open from the guard that I just killed. I quickly ran through it and up the twisting stairway. Once I entered onto the first floor, I was expecting to be met with Thane’s pack members but nothing. I heard a lot of growling and snapping outside. It sounded like a warzone.
I walked toward the entrance of the packhouse and looked out the already open door. My pack has come! I saw Tanner standing close and ran over to him.
“Tanner!” I shouted.
“Gabriel!” I looked up to see my father facing off with something that could only originate from the depths of hell. This is what Harper was trying to tell me! I have to end him now. I looked at Tanner and reluctantly started to reach Harper to him. As I did, my father mind linked me.
“Son, you must take Harper and return to our packhouse. Thane has the terminal stone. He is much too powerful to defeat like this.”
"NO! I am not leaving you.”
“Gabriel you must! This is an order. I will distract him while my pack is able to fall back. I love you son; I am extremely proud of you and the man you have become. You are to be a strong alpha and leader of your pack. Tell Mae that I love her. Be brave son, you know what must be done from here. I will die knowing that the harmony moon pack will be taken care of.” What else was I to say or do? He was still my alpha. I had to obey his orders. I tried to still my emotions and do what I had to do.
***END FLASHBACK***
-Still Gabriel’s POV-
“What happened to you in that dungeon, Gabe?” Tanner asked me.
“I don’t know, but I think it has something to do with Harper. I haven’t even spoken to Mika since it happened. I don’t even know if he is ok.” The rest of the ride home was silent. I had to prepare myself for when I arrived. My pack members need a strong leader. That is what my father raised me to be. I won't tarnish his name. Everyone should know that my father has faded away. They would have felt the link between them sever like I did. My poor mother. I looked at Harper in the seat to my left. Her beautiful features were relaxed on her face. I would die if I lost her. She was still illuminated in a blue light. It didn’t seem or feel dangerous. When I touched it, I felt calm. I brushed her soft black hair with my fingers. I hope she wakes up. I still don’t know if Harper is my mate. Mika has hidden back in my mind, and I can’t get him to speak to me. I don’t know what is going on, but something is not right. We drove onto the road leading to the gates of our packhouse.
Kai stopped at the gate and the guards opened the door.
“Welcome back, Alpha Gabriel.” I nodded my head to them. Kai proceeded into the driveway of the packhouse. Kai pulled up to the front packhouse doors. I got out on my side and walked around to Harper’s side and opened her door. I gently picked her up bridal style and walked her up to the door of the packhouse where Tanner was holding it open for me.
“I’ll follow you to her room and hold the door for you there, Gabe” Tanner was always willing to help.
“She is going to be in my room Tanner. I need to keep an eye on her, and my bed is bigger.” any other time Tanner would be making a joke about Harper being in my bed, but he knew now was not the time. I took my time walking up to my floor. Kai took my key and unlatched my door and held it open for me to walk in. I moved to the edge of my bed. Tanner pulled the covers back and I placed Harper gently onto it. I pulled the covers back up over her and sighed out in relief. Tanner motioned for me to follow him back out into the hallway. I pulled the door behind me but didn’t close it all the way.
“Are you going to be staying here with her for a while?” Tanner asked me.
“Yeah, for a little while. I want to be close to her, and I need time to think before I face everyone.” Tanner nodded his head.
“I’ll make sure you get privacy.”
“Thanks Tanner, for everything.” He nodded to me again, then turned to walk back down the hallway. I walked into my room pushing my door closed behind me. I pulled a chair up next to where Harper was in bed and picked up her small hand and held it. “I don’t know if you can hear me, Harper, but I hope you can. Rest for a while, and then come back to me. I need you right now. Dad is... gone, and I'll be expected to move fully into his position as alpha over the pack.” I stayed there a little while and then I decided to get in bed next to her. I placed my arm under her head and pulled her close. When the sun comes up, it will be the day of the solar eclipse and summer solstice. My father has planned a huge party to celebrate the moon goddess. Maybe I should cancel it...
