Chapter 35
Lucy thought of going home to Elijah's house the next day. She didn't know why she was hiding and pretending to go home with them. She didn't expect that seeing Andrew with Louella would hurt her like that she wouldn't feel it because she was used to it. She would see her together every day. She was confused about why she felt that way. That's why sometimes she avoids things that stress her because she will give importance to everything. And Lucy knew that Ma'am Elijah would ask her why she acted like that and she would be forced to confess. She saw Camille in the living room where Princess was sleeping with Sir Alfonso.
"I'm going home," she says.
"Aren't you going to eat?" sir Alfonso asked.
"Not anymore. I'll just eat there at home." Lucy answered.
"Okay."
She went out of the gate and looked for a ride. Elijah was in the kitchen preparing food for the three of them.
"Where is Lucy?" Luke asked.
"Go home to their province or hide from Andrew on purpose. He always comes back here. Maybe Lucy is annoyed. You know because when we men are ignored by the women we like, the more they dislike us, the more we will be challenged." Harris replied.
Luke just laughed.
"What about you, Luke? Don't you have a girlfriend left behind?" Harris asked.
"Nothing. I've been single for five years." Luke replied.
"That long? It's a good thing you managed to not have a woman in your life?" he asked.
"Yeah. The last I had a relationship as we separated because her parents didn't like me. After all, they were rich while I was poor. We separated by force. Even though I loved her, I let her go and now she was so happily married to the man her parents chose for her." Luke answered while still smiling.
She knows that Luke already moved on, she saw his genuine smile when he mentioned the girl he loved before.
"Oh, so sad," Elijah said.
"But you can have a relationship now if it ever happens again you will be proud of your work," Harris said.
"Yes. I have never felt love for a woman again." Luke replied, looked at her, and smiled.
Elijah smiled too. This is not the smile that she witnessed the first time she saw Luke there's something wrong with his stare. Maybe it was admiration, but when he found out she was his boss's wife, it was replaced by a smile of respect.
"There are many beautiful women in the company and take note there are many singles. For sure you will find someone among them." Harris said.
Which pushed Luke to get engaged. As for Andre, they still have no news.
Maybe Andre even argued with Liza's parents because they were too strict. They are the kind of parents who don't want their children to get married early as if they haven't been together for a long time. But there is nothing they can do when Liza insists because she is pregnant. Then Lucy entered the kitchen. She just finished taking a shower.
"When did you come?" Harris asked.
"While ago," Lucy answered.
"All right. Take a seat and eat."
Lucy also started eating.
"Aren't you going to eat, sweetheart?" Harris asked.
"I already ate a hot dog and fried eggs earlier," answered Elijah.
"What about rice?"
"I won't eat rice."
"Are you sure? Maybe the baby doesn't have vitamins."
"I'm fine."
After some time they finished eating. Lucy went to university and Luke was taken to the company. She and Harris did not enter the office. This confirms what he said that he will only work from home to watch over her. Elijah's pregnancy was happy because Harris helped him every day, including bathing and dressing. This is the one who prepares food for him and they eat together. He took her to the doctor for a check-up and the good news because their baby is three months old. The doctor gave them vitamins to take every day. Even though the taste was bitter, Elijah insisted on drinking.
For their baby to be healthy. They are in the car now while eating raw mangoes that have been sliced in a five pesos bag that they bought earlier on the side of the road. Harris bought him ten pieces that were now close to being used up.
"What else do you want to eat?" Harris asked.
"I'll just finish it first, sweetheart. Then I'll ask again what else I want to eat," answered Elijah.
"Of course. I'll give you anything you want. I'm laughing." Harris said.
"Why?"
"If you didn't get pregnant, we wouldn't be able to experience this. Going out together and going anywhere and eating something. I'm sorry, sweety. I was too busy with work and I didn't even have time for you."
"I'm fine. And I'm not complaining. You're busy with work." answered Elijah.
Then they went to the park with the fountain in the middle. She was eating peanuts while Harris took a video of her.
"What are you doing?" she asked.
"I took a video with you as a remembrance that when our baby grows up, we will show your journey during your pregnancy," replied Harris.
Elijah smiled.
"There are many people who come here. Look at them, they are happy."
She saw many families and couples talking in the distance. There are also people eating and children running around.
"Yes. You know many people in the world are stressed about anything so they come here. This is my plan when you want to unwind we will come here. Did you enjoy it?"
"Yeah."
"Eat. Not looking around." Harris said with a laugh.
She punched his arm weakly.
"You so mean. It seems like you're making fun of my eating habit." Elijah complained.
"No. I'm happy to see you eat a lot. And I didn't make fun of your pregnancy struggles because that's not a joke. You throw up even if you don't take any food out. You get a headache every morning. You can't notice all that food even if you don't stinky food is stinky for you. That's why I love you so much." Harris replied and kissed her on the forehead.
Harris was happy to see Elijah laughing as he joked. They didn't experience it before because they were busy with work. He wants to take good care of her so that she doesn't become stressed at work. She wants her baby to be healthy. He doesn't want to be Elijah's mistress so he will take him to another place. Harris was happy because their lives had been going well for the past few days. He hopes that there will be no major problems in their family, especially now that Elijah is pregnant. Elijah said goodbye for a while to look for street foods so he was left near the fountain. He turned around with a cold hand on his shoulder. He saw Beatrice's smiling face but she was so pale that the smile did not reach the eyes. Her belly is about seven months.
"Can I sit down?" she asked.
Harris didn't respond because he was uneasy that Elijah might get angry if he made her sit next to him. His pity prevailed because her stomach was big.
"Have a seat."
"Thank you," Beatrice replied.
Harris turned to see that Beatrice might be with someone, but she seemed to be alone. And he noticed that she was wearing only a simple dress and a thin slipper.
"Your wife is here with you? Where is she?" Beatrice asked.
"Just bought something," replied Harris.
"I see. I saw you here a while ago. I was just stationed not far away." said Beatrice.
"Where is your husband?" Harris asked.
Beatrice laughed but he noticed the sadness.
"Nothing. He left me after he got me pregnant. I approached you because I just wanted to apologize for what I did." said Beatrice.
"It's okay. I didn't fire you from the company."
"Yeah. But I left voluntarily because I was ashamed of what I had done," she replied.
"I was looking for a job but I couldn't handle the weight so I left my job. That's why I'm now walking here in the plaza alone."
"Where do you live now?" Harris asked.
"I rent a small apartment nearby," Beatrice replied.
Harris saw that Beatrice suddenly turned pale and was about to get up and leave.
"Please. Stay. You don't have to run if you see me. Your stomach is so big you might fall." Elijah said.
Harris turned around. He saw Elijah smiling as he looked at Beatrice. While Beatrice just bowed.
"You don't have to be afraid of me. We have to forget what happened before for the sake of our children. I'm pregnant like you so let's make good vibes always." Elijah said.
Harris smiled at what he said.
"I'm sorry."
"Don't be sorry. Everything happens for a reason," answered Elijah.
He put the food he bought on the seat in front of Beatrice.
"How are you?" asked Elijah.
Harris saw how Beatrice's tears flowed at Elijah's question. He knows that this woman struggles a lot. It didn't look like this before. He felt sorry for her.
"You don't need to cry. We'll just eat. We can't starve." Elijah said.
Elijah was like crying upon seeing Beatrice like this. This is not the woman that she met before over with confidence. Its strict aura suddenly disappeared and was replaced by bitterness and sorrow for life. She wasn't mad at her then. She just wanted her to wake up that what she did was wrong. She felt guilty because she left the company and this became her life.
It wasn't easy being unwanted. Maybe the parents rejected her because she got pregnant and ran away from the man. From what he sees here now, what he is going through is not easy. Unemployed and living in an apartment and pregnant.
No husband to take care of. No one will buy food for her and no one will comfort her when she cries. Elijah can't understand why some men leave. They are so lucky though because they were given a child but they will be rewarded with abandonment and hurt. As Elijah sees now, Beatrice is very hungry, she has no proper food. She didn't even have a comb in her hair and it looked like she hadn't bathed in months.
"Come to our house, Beatrice," Elijah said.
Beatrice stopped eating and looked at her.
"Why?"
"Don't you want a good life? You can go back to the company after you give birth. The vastness of the world doesn't end here. Look at you, you've neglected yourself. You weren't like that before." she says.
Beatrice looks away.
"There is no tomorrow waiting for me, Elijah. I don't know what tomorrow is waiting for me and my baby. My parents didn't send me back to our house because they said I only brought shame. I hope it's at least I wish they would accept their grandson, not me, but not the hardness of their hearts. I followed what they wanted to happen before, but this is what they will repay me for." said Beatrice.
"Not everything that happened to you was what you wanted. There are things that you really can't stop from happening. You can stand on your own two feet, right? Show them that you don't need them in your life." Elijah said as if she could cry.
Only now did he learn that when a woman is pregnant it becomes emotional and adds to Beatrice's pitiful situation.
"What time is it, sweetheart?" she asked.
"It's four o'clock in the afternoon."
"Let's go, Beatrice. We're going to the mall and I'll buy you new things and clothes for your baby." Elijah said happily.
"It's embarrassing for you," Beatrice replied.
"Don't be shy. If you're shy, you'll pay for it when you get to work at the company again." Elijah said.
"All right."
They hopped in their car and drove to the mall. She and Beatrice exited the car together and went inside, while Harris remained in the car outside. She tells Beatrice that whatever she wants, she will pay for. The child's clothing and equipment. Elijah was relieved that she could assist her in some small way. They were out of the mall in a matter of minutes. As the joy on her face reflected, Beatrice carried a lot.
"Are you having fun?" she asked.
"Of course, thank you."
They are leaving. Lucy and Luke had to have arrived home before five o'clock. When they arrived, Elijah was the first to go down, carrying the four paper bags. Luke and Lucy's clothes that she bought.
"Come inside, Beatrice. Maybe your cousin is here," she says.
Beatrice frowned.
"Cousin?"
"Let's go inside the house."
Beatrice followed her.
When they entered the house, they discovered Luke eating in the living room. Beatrice's eyes widened when she saw Luke as if she didn't expect it, and Luke didn't seem to react. Not your typical relatives greeting each other.
"Have long you arrived, Luke?" Elijah asked.
To get rid of the strong emotions that have surrounded them. She's not sure why, but Luke appears to harbor a grudge against Beatrice.
"It wasn't long ago, Miss."
Luke said as he walked away from them without even greeting Beatrice.
"Because Luke told us that you two are cousins and it's been a long time since we've seen each other and communicated. Aren't you happy to see him? Luke is the same to you. Did you two fight?" asked Elijah.
He didn't want to interfere but he was too curious about what was happening.
"No. We're fine."
He joined Beatrice in a room close to Lucy's. He wants her to rest.
"This is your room, Beatrice. And all you need is here. If you want to take a shower, there are shampoos and soaps in the bathroom." Elijah said.
"Thank you," Beatrice said and hugged her.
Elijah could tell this woman had been through a lot. She could tell Beatrice wanted to cry, but she kept it to herself. She went into her room and dressed. And she noticed Harris, who was sleeping with his eyes closed. Perhaps he was exhausted from their walk. And dressed as well. She stroked his cheek and kissed his brow. She is extremely fortunate in her marriage. She hopes that all women will be able to find the right man for them. She had finished her dressing and decided to leave the room.
She was going down the stairs when she heard a voice seems arguing.
"It's great to hear that you introduced me to them as your cousin even if it wasn't," Beatrice said with bitterness in her voice.
So these two are not relatives.
"So what's the big deal? I came here to work, not to gossip." Luke replied sharply.
"You've forgotten me, haven't you? It's like a while ago, even you can treat me as your cousin but you ignored me. Do you know you made me embarrassed with Elijah? This is too much." said Beatrice who started to cry.
It is bad to listen to the conversation but she is curious. She hopes Lucy and Harris don't come out yet. But there was a hand that held her back.
"What's up, ma'am? Is Luke talking to a woman?" asked Lucy.
"Keep quiet. Let's just listen first." Elijah replied.
"I'm not embarrassing you. You're just getting used to having everyone pay attention to you, but things aren't the same anymore. A lot has changed between the two of us." Luke said.
"But you love me, don't you?"
She and Lucy looked at each other. Luke laughed.
"Oh common. Our relationship has been over for a long time and what you say is my love has been gone for a long time. We should not talk about it anymore. Because it's a closed book for us. Can't you see? A lot has changed. I. The person you didn't fight with your parents before has gotten back up little by little." Luke said with pride in his tone.
Beatrice is the woman that Luke mentioned before. Who would have thought that these two met here today?
"I'm sorry because I didn't fight for you. I'm sorry because I was a coward. But now I'm ready, Luke. Because I still love you. I still love you very much. Come back to me. Please." begged Beatrice.
Elijah didn't realize that she was crying as well as Lucy who was next to her. The most heartbreaking scene she witnessed.
"No. Everything was not the same again. If I could turn back time, I wish we hadn't been together because you're so hard to love. Do you know why? You're a coward. You only know how to say love but you can't do anything about it. If you had fought me before, your life would not be so miserable now. Look at yourself now, you are too far from the life you used to live." Luke said.
"I'm sorry. But I was hurt by what you said before. I regret everything that happened in our relationship. Don't you feel sorry for my situation now?" Beatrice asked.
"I will not return to you just out of pity, Beatrice. I have not forgotten what your family did to my family. They robbed it of the right to live in this world. They can only hurt me, not including my loved ones. in life. My life has been difficult because of them, so I have a reason why I hate you so much. But it's not your fault. But don't ask for something that I can't give you. Because the pain is too much I feel." Luke said.
"Let's get out of here. Let's go back to the room, ma'am. You've been crying in there for a while the baby might get sick." said Lucy.
Elijah is hurt by Luke's hurtful words for Beatrice but he understands it.
"My parents are ignoring me. And you too. I thought when I saw you earlier that I found an ally." Beatrice said in a low voice.
"Where is the man they chose for you? Did he not fight for you? What happened? He also left you because you got pregnant by another man?"
Beatrice was suddenly silent.
"That's why you get hurt because of your wrong decisions. And all your sins you blame on other people. Grow up. No one will stay with you because of your attitude." Luke said.
"Damn you! I accepted the hurtful words you said earlier but this time it was too below the belt. Are you insulting me?" cried Beatrice.
