Chapter 46
"James" my eyes watered, but he only gestured at the handkerchief. I stared at it for a moment before taking it from him.
"What are you doing here?" I asked, after stopping my tears and getting a hold of myself.
"Well, I saw an all too familiar petite figure. I wanted to ignore at first, but then, she seemed down."
I sighed and looked away but immediately returned my gaze back to him. "I'm not that short to be regarded as petite."
"Oh, really? You seem like that to me." He chuckled with cocked head, and I frowned. "I really am not."
"Fine fine. You win." He and raised his hands in surrender. I rolled my eyes as I watched him try to stifle a laugher. Why is he acting like I am really short. Hmph!
"So..." James started out after a moment of silence. "Why were you crying?"
I let out an exasperated sigh, not knowing what to say. James nudged at me when I remained silent and I looked up at him. Another sigh left my lips as our eyes locked. His eyes were clouded with concern and I had no idea of what to think of it.
After a few minutes of silence and just staring at each other, I finally decided to speak up. "I think I caused trouble," I began and his brows raised confusedly. "What do you mean?"
"An hour before I came here, I was in a fight with Esham and I think it got filmed... it's probably gonna be on air tomorrow. Not like I'm not used to it." I shrugged and he frowned. "Why should you be used to it."
"Isn't it obvious? The internet has being used against me a number of times that I'm not even scared of what next it might bring about me... by the way, thanks for the statement you made. It really helped a lot."
He shrugged. "I didn't do much."
"Oh, please. You don't have to be so generous." I rolled my eyes and he chuckled. Another silence stepped in. My gaze went to a plant of tulip flowers at a far end. They were all sprouted and glowing brightly that I slowly became envious of them. They were just there, shining out their parts without being restricted, but here I am, I don't even have something bright in me to sparkle. I just have pains and repeated pains.
"You know, I'm sure Esham did something to warrant your beating so don't feel to bothered." James voice came up and I nodded. "Yeah, she did. Tried keeping calm but she is really annoying, you know?" I turned to look at him and he smiled. "She sure is. Our encounter at the party was really gross."
I sighed, and looked away from him. Now that I think about it, the show we put on that night is a waste now since the whole world knows now that we are just business partners.
We stayed there for a while before we decided to leave. James was with his car when he saw me, so he drove me off.
"Thanks for the ride." I said as the car screeched to a halt and he nodded. I reached for the seatbelt, unbuckled it and was about leaving the car when I felt James hand on mine. Turning back, I looked at his hand around mine before taking my gaze to him.
My brows furrowed? "Is there something you want?"
"Not really. Just... don't think about anything that happened today. There might be nothing about it tomorrow, so just rest."
I smiled, grateful for his reassuring words, but would there really be nothing tomorrow? That's almost impossible, but nevertheless, I replied to James words before exiting his car. I watched him drive off before I made my way in.
The first thing that caught my eyes was the food which was laid out in the dining room. I should have told Cynthia that I would be eating dinner with Karen, but... I'm glad I didn't, cause my stomach was empty. The fight had sucked up the little food I managed to digest before Esham showed up with her craziness.
I sauntered over to the dining, pulled out a chair before sitting down. Picking up my cutleries, I started eating the steamed rice and prawn sauce she made. By the time I was done, my stomach was filled up which was satisfying. I plopped on my bed the moment I had my bath and put on my night wear, and sleep called for me immediately.
________
The constant chiming of my phone woke me up from my sleep. I low groan left my lips as I opened my eyes. My eyes went to my phone, and I sighed, reaching for it. It was surely notifications about posts that was probably posted about me beating up, but as I turned it on. I was faced with random notifications.
"What the fuck is this?" I mumbled as I scrolled through it, checking it there was a post about me, but there was nothing. I even went as far as surfing the internet, but there was really nothing. Still finding it hard to believe, I left my bed to het ready for work.
As I stepped into the company, the workers greeted me casually without casting me weird glances or whispering among themselves. It was the same even when I got to my office. Mr Greg approached me with work without alerting me or any news.
"Hardins Construction sent me this." He reported, dropping a file in front of me. I glanced at it briefly before facing him, slightly tilting my head with a questioning look.
"Is there anything you need to tell me?" I asked and his brows creased into a confused frown. "What do you mean?"
I cleared my throat, pushing myself forward. "Like, something about me... an article..."
His frown deepened, and his eyes narrowed. "Where you expecting some kind of post about you or something?" He asked, and I chucked, waving my hand. "It's nothing."
I guess there really is nothing.
