Chapter 13

[OWEN POV]
We had gotten Amelia to the pack hospital quickly and now she was just laying there in the hospital bed. She has been here for 24 hours now and still no change! My emotions are all over, sadness because of how she has suffered, fear because she may never wake up, and anger because I feel powerless to help her. I had told Lima and Olivia that they should leave when it had gotten late, I told them I would stay with her. I sat in the same chair the whole night watching her breathe. I wanted to talk to her again, I wanted to hear her voice. This whole thing is breaking me apart, I just found her, and I never want to lose her. The doctors have been running tests since we got here but have still not returned with the results and I feel my patience running out.
I have always been a nice person and Alpha, but I swear if someone does not tell me what is going on soon I will not keep that reputation for long. Finally, the doctor walked in and by his expression the news was not good. I stood up quickly and waited.

“Alpha we have received the results from all the tests.” The doctor began. “I am afraid the news may be disappointing.”
“In what way?” I ask sharply.
The doctor flinched a little at the tone of my voice.
“Well there are several things to concern us. Miss Amelia…” He started.
“Luna, she is the future Luna!” I said correcting him.
He lowered his head and continued. “It seems the Luna has endured many years of malnutrition and abuse. Because she has never shifted, her healing ability is not as it should be for one of our kind. Her internal injuries are severe and did not heal properly.”
“What are you trying to say?” I ask getting frustrated by the running around he is doing with his words.
“She has not woken because her body is too weak.” The doctor says simply.
“Will she never wake up?” I ask letting out a deep sigh and lowering my gaze to the floor trying to hold in my emotions.

“It is hard to say. We have given her a special medication that is used to quicken the healing process for those who’s wolves are weak, but we are not sure how long it will take for her to heal completely. She has had several bruised organs and broken bones over the years, it is a lot for her body to have endured.” The doctor adds. “From what you told us, her wolf has overpowered her on several occasions correct?”
“Yes several times to try and protect or help her.” I answer him returning my attention to him.
“Because her body was so weak, the amount of energy her wolf used to break down the barrier and take over has also caused the Luna to become very weak. She had not been properly taught to connect with her wolf so when her wolf had to force her way out it weakened the Luna a lot.” The doctor said.
“Is there nothing that can be done?” I ask him impatiently and through gritted teeth.
“Shifting would help her heal but it would also be very painful because it is her first time.” The doctor said simply.
“But how can she shift if she is unconscious and weak?” Is this doctor messing with me? It made no sense.
“We can try and wake her with adrenaline and that may give her to energy she needs to go through the shift.” He says. “Adrenaline as a key factor when shifting, so if we can give her enough of a push it may be enough to make her shift. However, there are dangers involved.” He says pausing.

“What dangers doctor? Spit it out!” I say my voice growing more powerful by thee minute.
“Because of how weak she is, the adrenaline may be too much for her heart to handle and could kill her.” He says trailing off toward the end.
My eyes widen at his words. “So, I only have one choice and that choice could either save her or kill her?”
“Yes, Alpha I’m sorry.” The doctor says avoiding my gaze now.
“And if I decide not to give her the adrenaline, what would happen?” I ask.
“She could recover in a few months or longer, or she could die from her weakness.” He answers.
Great! So, either way I could lose my mate forever! Why moon goddess would you let me find her only to take her from me?
I know I need to make a decision, but I wish I knew what would she want. Would she want me to try to save her even if she may die, or would she want to die peacefully? That question pains me because it involves her death and I never wanted to think my mate would be taken from me in that way.
“Can I have some time to think about it?” I ask the doctor
“Of course Alpha, but please not too long. The sooner the better.” He said bowing his head and leaving the room.
Now that he had left I let go and tears quickly filled my eyes. I did not want to lose Amelia before we even had time together. I need to know what to do, if only she could tell me.
‘Let’s ask Anaya.’ Samuel recommends.
‘Do you think you can reach her?’ I ask hopeful.
‘I will try.’ My wolf tells me before he grows silent.
I wait nervously for Samuel to tell me if he can reach his mate. Why is it taking so long? It’s only been 5 minutes? Why does time move so slow?!
‘Owen, she says Amelia would fight to live. Even after all she has been through, she always fights to live. She always felt there was something more she needed to be, so she always fought to stay alive.’ Samuel said calmly.

Our mate is so strong, and she has fought to live this long through all those horrible things. She can make it; I know she can! I walk out of her room and to the nurse’s station to ask for the doctor to come back. I wait for him for about 10 minutes and pace the room. When he finally enters I waste not time.
“Let’s do it. Let’s give her the adrenaline.” I say to him firmly.
“Are you sure Alpha?” He asks.
“Yes, her wolf thinks she can handle it. So, let’s do it!” I say without doubt.
The doctor nods and leaves the room to prepare the injection. I let out a sigh and walk toward my mate’s motionless body and take her dainty hand in mine. I bring her hand to my mouth and softly kiss it. The tingling spreads through me as it always has when we touch, and I never want to lose that feeling.
“Amelia, love, I know you are tired. I know you have been hanging on the best you could this whole time, but please hold on just a little longer. I have only just found you, and I want us to live a long life together. So please don’t leave me yet! Please!” I say feeling the words get choked in my throat.
Samuel whimpers in my head. I know he will grieve deeply if we lose our mate, and it will hurt him far deeper to also lose Anaya. Please moon goddess let this work.
I sit next to her holding her hand until the doctor and a nurse arrives.

“Ok Alpha, we have the medication ready. We will monitor her heart rate carefully, and we are ready to restart her heart if we can and if such measures is needed.” He says taking the syringe in his hand.
He walks over to my mate’s arm and sticks the needle in which makes me let out a low growl for hurting her. The doctor removes the needle and bows his head to me in apology. We step back and watch the monitors beep waiting for a reaction. It felt like hours had passed but only seconds had.
Amelia’s body jerk suddenly and then she took in a quick breath and lunged forward panting quickly and groaning in pain. I rush to her and take her hand.
“Amelia? Baby I know it hurts but you need to shift, ok?” I try to encourage her.
Her eyes are pinched shut and she is groaning in pain and doubled over. A moment later she sits up and throws her head back and defining scream of pain leaves her mouth as her breaths quicken and she drops back motionlessly. The monitors connected to her all go off alerting us that she was not breathing, and her heart had stopped. The doctor and nurse rush to drop her bead down and try to restart her heart.
I feel like everything is moving in slow motion and all I hear is the heart monitor sound telling me that my mate is dead.

No no no no….
No! She is not dead! NO!!!!
I feel my legs grow weak and I drop down to my knees and let out a howl that shakes the small room and causes the doctor and nurse to curl over and hold their ears. I drop down and sob and Samuel wails in my mind as he keeps trying to connect to Anaya and failing.
‘They are gone.’ I say to him.
‘No! She is our mate! Chosen for us by the moon goddess! She is to be with us forever and complete us! SHE IS NOT GONE!!!’ He yells at me.
Before I could say anything more, Amelia’s eyes shot open and the beeping from the machines faded. She sat up again and was breathing quickly like she had been a moment ago. Again she groaned in pain and wrapped her arms around herself.
“What is happening?” She says through her clamped teeth before letting out a small scream.
I stood quickly and rushed to her side again reaching for her.
“Luna, you need to try and breath normally. I know you are in a lot of pain but you need to try and stay calm.” The doctor says to her grabbing one of her shoulders.
“It hurst!” She says groaning again and twisting.
The familiar sounds of cracking bones echoes through the room, and she tries to hold her another scream as her body twists.

“Amelia you are starting to shift, don’t be afraid ok? It will hurt but it will be over soon.” I tell her softly holding onto her gain and she squeezes my hand tightly.
Her head falls back, and she let’s out a painful scream again before her body quickly grows and morphs to her wolf. I don’t want to leave her but the doctor yells at us to step back. With several more cracking sounds Amelia let out another scream that sounded more animalistic before one more twist and a wolf stood on the bed where she once sat.
I was stunned when my eyes say the wolf before me. I had never seen a wolf like her before. The doctor and nurse kept their distance from her so as not to provoke her. She was a newly shifted wolf and I am sure it was safe to keep some distance from her so she did not feel threatened, but I couldn’t help but move closer to her. She looked around the room quickly and crouched down, with her ears pulled back growling toward the doctor. The doctor and nurse moved back slowly as Anaya jumped off the bed and moved closer to her growling.
“Anaya! Enough!” I growled at her.
She whimpered at the sound of my commanding voice and turned to me.
“They won’t hurt you Anaya, they brought you out to save Amelia. Just calm down.” I tell her moving around the bed to be closer to her.

She bowed her head as I approached her allowing me to reach my hand out and rest it on her soft fur. She was amazing, and beautiful. A white wolf! I had never seen one, but I had heard stories about them, but she was different. She was not just white, but her fur glistened, almost like a pearl. It was beautiful!
