Chapter 41
The night sky was beginning to give way to the light glow of early morning now, and we soon arrived in front of a cabin with thee most ornaments that I had seen so far.
“This is where you will meet the chief, so you wish to go in or rest first?” Cheveyo asks me.
“Well, since we are already here, I will see him now. Thanks for all your help!” I tell him with a smile.
“Do you want us to come with you Luna?” Natalia asks me.
“No, that’s ok. You have been separated from your mate for so long, you two should spend time together.” I tell her shooing her out of the car.
“Ok, we will walk home from here. Call me if you need anything Luna.” Natalia urged.
I assured her I would and remined her to call me Amelia.
“I will accompany you Luna.” Cheveyo says turning the ignition off and opening his door.
I guess it wouldn’t hurt to have a familiar face in the room. We walked toward the cabin and before we even reached the door, it opened, and a woman stepped out.
“He is expecting you. ” She says.
Who is that? If I had to guess from the looks of her, she must have been the elder’s mate. She was older but looked strong and wise. It made sense that an elder of a tribe would have an equally strong mate. Once we were inside Cheveyo greeted her and stepped aside for her to see me. I kept my eyes low at first not sure what to do and went for a head bow just to be safe.
“No Kaiah, I should bow to you!” She says and I look up to see her lowered to the ground bowing before me.
“Kaiah?” I ask in confusion.
“It is the tribe name you have been given. You are the White Wolf, untarnished and pure. The name means ‘one who is pure’.” Cheveyo explains.
It felt weird being called by all these different names, but I guess with every pack there was a chance I would be called something different. My kind were told about in stories through the generations, and there was no doubt many names we came to have over that time. I found it fascinating though, how each person viewed the white wolf as someone very special even if they had never felt their presence. It felt like such an honor to be a part of such an amazingly cherished history.
“Please come this way, the elder is right through here.” She says leading us through the house and out the back door to a small hut. It looked like a more traditional home that this tribe may have used in the past, and it was beautiful.
“Elder, she has arrived.” The woman says as Cheveyo and I enter behind her.
I stay hidden behind Cheveyo because I felt safer there.
“Step forward child, do not fear me.” A man’s voice says.
His voice is deep and warm, so I do as he says and step out. When I see him, I realize he is not one to fear. He is older like the woman and has a calm and peaceful expression that makes me feel safe to approach him.
“I have been awaiting your arrival for some time now, I am surprised it took you this long to seek me out.” He says offering me an area near him to sit. The woman and Cheveyo sit behind me and become very silent.
“I am sorry, I did not know I was meant to come here.” I tell him.
“You fought the call for a very long time, it is not surprising since you emerged so late in life.” He says.
“How do you know that?” I found his knowledge of things he did not witness a little strange.
“I have the ability of sight. Sight that goes beyond what can be seen by my eyes.” He replies.
“Like a psychic?” I knew I was naive about such things, but I wanted to know everything.
“In a way I suppose you can say so. However, I only see what the moon goddess whishes for me to see. I have been seeing you since the day you were born.” He says proudly.
“Since I was born? Why did no one come for me sooner and tell me what I was?” I felt a slight pain of irritation.
“You needed to find your path in your own time. If you had known sooner, you may have faced more difficulties in your early life. There was no guarantee that if we had tried to take you, that your mother would allow it. You are unique situation also brings forward an interesting puzzle that we must understand before your true purpose can be fully realized.” He explains.
“My wolf has said I a unlike others she had been assigned to.” I say.
“Yes, there has not been a white wolf who has had a mate or a child. Often it was because of the white wolves being held captive and away from the pack so as to keep them untainted. However, once long ago a white wolf had been born here. She was free like you, but never felt an urge for a mate. In fact, she had this ability to draw others in and enchant them, but she could never feel a true bond with them. She fought to her last breath in the battles we had with the humans, and she used her ability to confuse the humans long enough for the tribe to retreat and cast a cloaking spell hiding us from our enemy. So it was with all the white wolves in our history. They gave their lives protecting our kind inn some of the worst battles we have ever faced. But you, you are not a warrior. You have a kind and pure heart, one that does not seek battle but wishes for peace.” He seems surprised by this revelation.
“Yes, I do not wish to fight. It is my wolf who is the warrior not me. She completely takes over when such violence is needed, and I am sent into a sort of sleep.” I try to explain the best I can.
“Very unusual. And the child? What has she said about him?” he asks.
Again, he knows more than most.
“She told me she has never had a pup in her past lives.” I say.
“This is the first time hearing a white wolf carrying a child in all their history. Have you sensed anything unusual about him?” He asks dropping his gaze to my growing belly.
“His growth is faster than even a wolf pup, in fact I only found out I was carrying him a short while ago. He is expected to be here within a few days.” I tell him.
His eyes turn to me and back down again.
“There must be a reason this pup is so eager to be born.” He says. “May I?”
He reaches out for my stomach and places a hand on it after I give him a nod of permission. He closes his eyes and instantly I can see his demeaner change. He takes in a deep breath and his eyes quicken behind his eyelids, almost like he is having a nightmare. The baby begins to shift and move at the touch of the elder.
“What’s happening?” The elder’s hand feels like a flame against my skin. “Please you are hurting me.”
He seems trapped in a trance, and the pain I feel only grows stronger. I try to pull his hand away, but it is firmly in place. The elder’s breathing grows quicker and his body begins to shake but his hand does not move. Cheveyo and the woman rush to us and try to separate us, but it as if we have been fussed together and no amount of force can separate us.
“Cha’tima! You must let go!” The woman yells. “Release your mind!”
What was happening? The pain was becoming too strong! This had to end.
“Let us go!” I yell and a surge of white light shoots out of me and in all directions.
The force of the energy release sends everyone flying back and falling hard. What was that? I took a deep breath and glanced down at my hands and body that is now glowing under a bright white light.
What is this?
‘The pup, he…he is…’ Anaya begins but her voice drifts away.
‘Anaya? What is happening? Stop this.’ I yell at her, but she does not answer. ‘Anaya, what? What is wrong with the baby?’
I look over to see the three other people in the room remaining crouched where they fell. They do not look at me, and the do not stand.
Are they afraid of me?
