Chapter 50
(Owen POV)
I could feel it. That pull, the one I had only hoped I would feel one day. The feeling that my mate was near. Something changed yesterday, the pull grew stronger, stronger than I have ever felt it. I could barely sleep realizing how close my mate had to be for me to feel the pull this strong for the first time. As soon as morning came I couldn’t handle the urge not to go looking for her, it was driving me crazy. The need to find her, to be near her, it was getting so strong.
There was no way to know where she was really, but it had to be within town at least. I decided to go for a drive and maybe I would be able to follow the pull to wherever my mate was. I was in too much of a hurry to eat breakfast with the rest of my family. I rushed past my mother, stopping to place a quick peck on her cheek before dashing out the door. I would just stop by the café and grab my usual, it would be quicker.
The excitement was fueling my every move and I was sure I was driving over the speed limit at this point, but I didn’t care. I needed to find her! I quickly parked in the small café parking lot and jumped out of my car. There it was again but much stronger, the pull. Could she really be that close?
I walked closer to the café and before I stepped inside I heard a voice calling out from behind the building.
“Hello who are?” The voice said.
I froze for a moment. The sound of the voice made my heart race and when I drew closer I saw her. She was turned away from me and she seemed to be looking at something in the distance. I turned my eyes to where she was looking but I saw nothing. When I turned to her again it was as if she was in some sort of trance, so I moved slowly closer to her. As I did I looked once more at the trees and saw a figure but before I could make out what it was, it disappeared. The girl was still acting strange, so I called out to her.
“Hey!” I yelled out.
She turned to me and I felt like my world stopped. She was beautiful and I was sure I had never seen anyone as beautiful as her. But she was acting strange, so I walked closer. As I did her eyes began to close and I knew something was wrong. Her body went limp and I rushed to catch her. As I held her, my skin burned where it touched her. It was not painful, but it was hot to the touch.
“It’s ok.” I whispered to her as I lifted her and carried her toward the café.
Once inside the woman I had seen several times when I came in rushed toward me.
“Oh my god! Amelia! What happened?” She asked turning to me.
“I don’t know. I saw her collapse outside.” I tell her quickly.
“She is burning up. We need to get her to a hospital!” The woman says. “Can you help me bring her to my car…uh…sorry what’s your name again?”
“Owen.” I tell her with a half-smile.
“Owen right, I have seen you here before.” The woman says.
I nod in response.
“Ok Owen, I’m sorry to ask but like I said if you can help me get her to the car we should take her to see a doctor now.” She says a little slower.
She must have noticed that I was a little out of it. Here I was with my mate, and she something was wrong with her. I felt stunned and panicked inside. A flood of emotions was rushing though me, but the biggest one was confusion.
“No, um…I’ll take her. You are probably needed here.” I say as she tries to pull the girl up from the chair I had set her in.
“Do you know her?” The woman gives me a suspicious look.
I wasn’t sure what to tell her, but I needed to do this on my own. This girl needed a doctor but not just any kind. I could sense her wolf, and she needed to be taken to the pack doctor. They were the only ones who could really help her. Human’s were not encouraged to enter pack land, so this woman could not come with us. I needed to lie.
“Yes I am a friend, don’t worry I will take good care of her.” I tell her with a confident smile.
She watches me for a moment, but after taking aa glance around at the room full of customers she agrees.
“Here is my cellphone number. Call me as soon as you know anything please!” She says writing something quickly on a small pad of paper.
“I will!” I assure her.
She nods her head giving me the ok to take the girl with me. I bend down and with ease lift her into my arms and head for the door. The woman rushes and opens it for me and watches me as I walk the girl to my car.
I place her into the passenger seat carefully and close the door softly so as to not startle her awake. I quickly run to my side of the car and buckle myself in. I drive off and head toward our pack land as fast as I can without drawing too much attention to myself. It would be hard to explain an unconscious stranger to a cop if I get pulled over. Thankfully it was not a far drive and soon I was pulling onto the small dirt road that lead into the pack lands.
I glanced over at the girl several times. She looked so peaceful but ever so often her eyebrows would furrow and the urge to brush my hands over the small wrinkles it made only grew the longer we were together. She was beautiful but as she slept she was also adorable, and I could not help how drawn I was to her. Was this really my mate? The pull I felt subsided the moment I was near her, but when we touched I did not feel the tingling everyone described, instead her skin was hot to the touch.
Was she so sick that it would prevent me feeling that connection to her?
I hoped that the doctor would be able to give me some answers.
I pulled up to the pack hospital and rushed to bring the girl inside.
“Young alpha, what has happened?” Natalia asks me as I rushed inside.
“This girl, she collapsed. I think she is my mate. Can you help her?” I ask.
Natalia looks at the girl in my arms and pauses.
“What? What’s wrong?” I ask her.
“Uh, nothing! Please bring her this way.” I was confused by Natalia’s reaction but follows her to a room and I try to set the girl down as gently as possible.
Natalia scrambles around the room for different pieces of equipment to attach to the girl. Amelia. Was that what the woman at the café had called her?
“How long has she been like this?” Natalia asks checking Amelia’s temperature.
“About 30 minutes. I didn’t want to take her to a human hospital if what is wrong with her is related to her wolf as well.” I tell her.
She looks at me with an expression I can not quite place. “You did the right thing bringing her here. It is better if she is here. She seems to have a high temperature, but that could not be the reason she fainted. I will have the doctor come and examine her as soon as he can. Until then, this cold IV drip should help bring her temperature down. I will go get the doctor now. Excuse me.”
I watch as Natalia quickly leaves the room. It is hard to miss that she was uneasy when she saw the girl I had brought in. Did she know her? I looked down at the gi-Amelia, and gave in to my temptation. I wanted to feel that spark between us. So, I brushed my thumb across her cheek, and hoped that I would feel that connection.
(Natalia POV)
When I saw her my breath got caught in my throat for a moment. It was her, the girl we had been told about. My pack elder had described her in so much detail, and here she was. But something was wrong! She looks sick, and Owen seems confused like he isn’t really sure who she is. Had he not felt their connection? Did she not feel it?
Why was she here now? This was not how things were meant to happen.
As soon as I could get away I knew I needed to let the others know what was happening. I went back to the nurse desk and pulled my phone out of the drawer beside my chair. I scrolled down until I saw Alo’s name. The call rang a couple of times before the sound of my mate’s voice echoed in my ear.
“Natalia? Are you alright?” he asks immediately.
“Alo, she is here.” I say whispering into the phone.
“Who love?” He asks.
“The white wolf, she is here at the hospital. Something is wrong with her. She looks sick.” I say urgently into the receiver.
There is silence for a moment.
“Let me go to the elder.” Alo says and I can hear faint steps.
“Natalia.” The sound of the elder’s voice stills me.
“Yes elder.” I reply.
“She is there?” he asks.
“Yes.” I answer simply.
“Natalia, my visions have changed.” He says to me.
(Amelia POV)
Those eyes….
They had been so intense, and I felt like they were looking deep within me. I had felt fear the moment I saw them, but then I felt drawn to them. He must have done something to me, if that voice had not broken the trance I was under I would have gone to him.
The voice.
I knew that voice.
The urge to wake up grew as I remembered the voice I heard call out to me before the darkness.
I force myself to open my eyes, but the light around me so bright that I instantly regret it.
“Hey.” A soft voice says above me. “Are you waking up now?”
There it was. That voice.
Him hovering over me makes the light around us a little less bright and I can open my eyes a little easier now.
“Owen.” I say softly.
