Chapter 35
The next day I woke early to a strange sensation coming from my stomach. I had never felt anything like it, and the sudden strange feeling made my heart race with worry. I sat up suddenly and my head felt dizzy, and it made me feel sick to my stomach. My stomach! I removed the covers from my body and lifted my shirt to examine my belly. I was stunned to see how much it had grown over night. Was this normal? I was told that werewolf pregnancies were shorter than human pregnancies, but this seemed too fast. From the look of my belly, it looked as if I was equivalent to five months pregnant! That had to be impossible! I felt panic take over and I turned to wake up Owen, but he wasn’t there.
I felt even more panicked when I realized I was alone, and I felt my breaths getting quick and short. The sudden change made my head even more dizzy.
‘Mia calm down!’ I heard Anaya yell, trying to get my attention. ‘You will be fine Mia, just stay calm ok?’
‘Where is Owen? I need to find him!’ I say to her.
‘He is at the training are, remember? He said he would meet Liam there today. You can talk to him if you need to, through the mate bond! Use the mind link, and you can tell him to come home.’ She reminded me.
That’s right! The mind link! Of course, the moment I need Owen to be able to hear my thoughts I had some how closed off my mind to him. Yet when I wanted my thoughts to be private I would forget how!
“Owen? Can you hear me?” I ask through the link.
“Amelia? Yes, I can hear you, what’s wrong?” He asks his voice laced with concern.
“I am not really sure, but I woke up and I felt strange. Now my belly is really big! I look 5 months pregnant now! That isn’t normal right? Even for a werewolf?” I ask confused.
He didn’t answer right away which had me even more worried.
“No that’s too fast. We need to get you to the doctor.” He closed of the link, and I assumed it was because he was on his way.
Not long after I could hear the door slam downstairs and rushed footsteps coming up to our room. Owen open the door to our room suddenly and rushed over to me with worry in his eyes.
“Are you ok?” He asks.
I can’t help but smile at his cute concern, but no I was freaking out!
“I felt something weird and it woke me up and I realized that the baby had grown, a lot!” I tell him.
I lift my shirt slowly to show him my belly, and his eyes grew at the sight. I had not been anywhere close to this last night.
“He has grown that much? I have never seen a pup grow that fast!” Owen said reaching his hand out and resting them on my belly carefully.
Suddenly I felt a push and I knew it was the baby. He had kicked Owen’s hand! We looked at each other in surprise and confusion. I had not felt the baby yet, and now he was so big that one kick felt so strong.
“Let’s get you to the pack doctor!” He said softly taking my arm and helping me stand.
I wasn’t so big that it was hard to stand, but I felt unbalanced from the sudden difference in my body. I changed quickly, well as quick as I could with discovering some of my clothes didn’t fit anymore. Owen offered me a flowy sun dress which was loose enough to fit me comfortably. Once I had dressed, Owen handed me a muffin as we walked out to the car. I took a big bite, because as soon as I smelled it I realized how hungry I was. I had never felt so hungry before, it felt like I had not eaten for a whole day. I finished the muffin in record time, and Owen laughed at the sight of me when it was gone. Because, in honesty, I was still so hungry.
“Is this from the café?” I ask him.
“Yep! I picked it up this morning for you before I went to training!” He said with a smile.
“Oh man, I feel like I haven’t seen Harper in so long.” I say feeling terrible for leaving the café and not returning in so long.
“I tried to explain to her that you have had some stuff come up, but you would try to visit her soon. Although it may be difficult to explain how you are so far along in your pregnancy and she didn’t even know.” Owen said with a small laugh.
He was right! I looked so far along that I would have started to show back when I was working at the café if I was having a normal human pregnancy, she would have known. So how would I explain to her why I looked 5 months pregnant? It would be impossible to explain that to her without telling her what I was. Most werewolves did their best not to0 let humans know what they are. It is almost like an unwritten universal rule. There were some who didn’t care and would mate with humans and then tell them later. Which is what happened between my mother and father. She told us that they had met at a bar and slept together that night after too many drinks.
My mom found out she was pregnant, and my dad moved in with her, he explained everything to her then. Of course, he was willing to pay to help her get rid of the baby, but my mom had refused. She really liked my dad and I guess she hoped they could be a family. My dad, however, told her they couldn’t get married. That should have been warning enough, but my mom told him she didn’t care. Then a few years later they had me, but before my second birthday my dad was gone. Liam was old enough then to remember how my mom changed, he said she was broken and angry.
She drank a lot and would leave us to fend for ourselves often. Liam would take on the roll of caring for me, making sure I ate. When mom was really bad, we would go the neighbor’s house and she would let us stay with her. She was a sweet older lady who had several grandchildren. So, she had tons of toys that we had never even seen before, and she always had the best snacks. A year or two later our mom brought some guy home, said he was our new dad and that was that. I still have no idea how they met, but he was just as bad as her. He drank a lot, and sometimes he would hit us. He never hit my mom, I guess because he actually cared about her.
The neighbor tried so hard to keep us safe and away from our parent’s when they had been drinking, but she couldn’t always. Then when I was 12 she died, and we were left with no one to run to. We had to endure the abuse for many years until Liam turned 18 and left. He had planned to find us a place and come for me when he did, but when he tried my mom would threaten him. She wouldn’t let me leave with him; I was stuck there. I tried my best to not provoke my mother and her husband, and for the most part I succeeded. Not always, but most days I was even able to avoid them all together. Especially during high school, I would sign up for early classes and extra classes after school. If I planned right I would be home when they were out or already asleep.
I didn’t have many friends then, but there was one boy who had noticed me. He was sweet and not long after we met I knew I liked him, but I was scared to tell him everything going on at home. It was hard to hide it when one day I showed up with a black eye that I had gotten from my stepdad the night before. He had been on a bender and I just happened to say the wrong thing and he hit me. When my friend saw he walked me home and confronted my stepdad, he threatened to call the police until my stepdad pulled a knife out. He threated my friend that he would kill me if he ever saw the guy again with me. Needless to say, I didn’t have many friends in school.
No one knew the real truth about what I was either, and I was glad of it. I was sure that would make me even more of an outcast than I already was. I would be some kind of side show freak to them if they knew, and I didn’t want that. So, I kept my true self a secret my whole life. I wish I had someone to help me through those years when my wolf emerged. I wish I had time to know her then, maybe things would be easier now.
Soon we were parking in front of the pack hospital, I had been lost in my thoughts the whole ride here. The look on Owen’s face seemed to be relaxed, so again somehow I had successfully closed off my thoughts to him. I wasn’t sure how yet; it would come and go, and I still had not mastered it but I was glad that this time it did. I hadn’t told him everything yet, and with what was happening now I didn’t want to. At least not yet.
We walked inside and the nurse who had been with me when I found out of the baby greeted us sweetly.
“Luna, you are back so soon?” She asked smiling.
“I was hoping we could see the doctor. It’s about the baby.” I tell her.
“Of course! I will page him!” She said quickly calling the doctor from the phone on the nurse desk.
She showed us back into an exam room that was already equipped with the machines needed for the doctor to check on the baby. I sat don wont he exam table and Owen pulled a chair over so that he could hold my hand. He was fidgeting and I could tell his anxiety was high, but he was trying not to show it. Not long later the doctor cam in all smiles and welcoming.
“So, Luna, what can I do for you today? Are you not feeling well?” He asks beginning his exam with checking my vitals.
“Well, it seems like the baby has grown. A lot!” I tell him.
“Is that so? Why don’t I take a look?” He says.
I lie back on the table and lift my dress to show him my growing belly. Owen becomes uneasy by this, but this was my doctor and he would see far more when it came time to deliver the baby. It wasn’t like I was completely naked!
“I see what you mean.” The doctor says pushing softly on my belly. “It seems like the young alpha is eager to make an appearance.”
“But isn’t this too fast?” Owen asks.
“It is even at our standards, but the Luna is not just any wolf.” The doctor says stepping back.
“What do you mean?” Owen asks.
“Well, as far as I know. There has never been a case of a white wolf bearing a child. I have contacted a friend of mine who has studied extensively on the history of the white wolf. I wanted to know as much as I could so I would know the best way to treat the Luna when it would be time for her to give birth. He has been speaking to others who know some things on the subject but so far all he had been able to find out was that this is the first time in our history that a white wolf would give birth to a child.” The doctor explained. “The white wolves were used exclusively for battle and often were held away from the rest of the pack. They were too rare and in the past, they were hidden away so that other packs would not find out about them. Because of this, so little is known about them.”
“If so little is known, how do we handle things? I mean we have no idea what will happen to her and the baby if he keeps growing like this.” Owen says sounding slightly panicked.
“We will have to keep a close eye on the Luna, but if this is normal for her kind than I do not think we need to be concerned. I will have her come in once a week and I will check the baby but at this rate, she will be giving birth very soon.” The doctor said moving one of the machines closer to us. “Let’s take a look at the little pup now.”
He prepared the machine and soon the sound of a small but strong heartbeat was echoing through the room. Our baby!
“He looks very strong Luna!” The doctor says turning the screen so we could see the baby. “As far as I can see, he looks perfectly fine. He seems to be developing well. He has grown a lot and it maybe be best for you to come once a day this week to see if his growth continues like this. If it does you may be welcoming a little pup by next week.” He says with a smile.
Why is he acting like this is all totally normal?
“Does that mean once he is born that he will also grow as fast?” I ask him.
He paused for a moment to think over my question.
“It is really hard to say. Like I said we do not know enough. We will have to take things as they come. I am sorry I can not give you more answers, but we really have never dealt with anything like this before.” The doctor reminds us.
Our baby was fine, but he was growing so fast. How much of him being our baby would we enjoy?
