Chapter 36
The trip to the doctor did nothing for my anxiety regarding this whole pregnancy. I could see Owen was an easy about what we had heard from the doctor. We had no idea what to expect, and now we weren’t even sure how long we would have to enjoy with baby. We walked back to the car and sat in silence until we arrived back home. As we drove in front of the house we saw Liam standing out front, and something seemed off.
“Liam what’s going on?” I ask him.
He looks at me with a sad look but turns to Owen.
“We have a problem.” He says to him.
Owen looks at him confused. “Why didn’t you connect with me over mind link?”
“I wanted to talk to you in person. Both of you.” He said glancing at me.
“Ok, come inside then.” Owen says opening the door.
We all took a seat in the living room and waited for Liam to tell us what was happening.
“We finally were able to get some news about what has been going on at Alpha Cole’s pack. Your father has officially taken on Alpha Cole’s daughter as his mistress, and shortly after saying before the pack that she would be his new mate….” He paused for a moment. “He killed alpha Cole in front of the entire pack.”
Owen sat up straight at those words and took in a sharp breath.
“So, my father is now the alpha there?” Owen asks to clarify.
“Yes, and he has formed an alliance with the other pack in the territory. The source of the news has not said what the alpha’s plans are, but they suspect he plans to kill the other alpha as well. If he acquires that pack as well, he will be close to matching our numbers in a short time. If he continues like this we will be well outnumbered when he turns his eyes back to us.” Liam explained.
Owen was breathing heavy now as his anger began to grow and radiate around us. His father had threatened to return with an army, and he was making moves already to keep his word. I still didn’t understand why he would want this pack if he had so easy taken over two of the larger packs in the state. It was still unclear what his real motive was, other than to have the biggest army. We would be outnumbered, and if he killed most of our pack he would gain nothing when it came to numbers.
So, what was he after? I looked to Owen and I could see his anger beginning to fade and he sat back in his seat. He looked like he was thinking of what his next move should be, so I turned back to my brother.
“Are you sure we can trust the person that gave you this information? Could they not be working for the alpha?” I ask him.
He looks at me and then at Owen. “I believe we can trust them. Because…” He stopped once again and looked down at his hands. “They hope that Owen can defeat his father and take over those packs himself.”
I turn to look at Owen and his expression was unchanged. He was looking back at Liam with no specific emotion, nothing to show what he thought of this news. He closed off his thoughts to me and I rested my hand on his leg. He turned to look at me and his face softened when our eyes met. He glanced down at my belly and back up at me as if to say he was worried about our baby. When he did, it made me think and the thought scared me.
Our baby would be born soon and now we were being pushed into fighting a war where both Owen and I could be killed. I had to fight; I was sent here to fight. I was sent by the moon goddess to bring peace, and yet I had this little baby fighting for my protection. I need to protect him too, but also our entire pack. As a mother, my child would always come first but as the white wolf my urge to protect the pack was so strong. He would be part of this pack, but he needed me by his side protecting him not running into danger.
“Why do they expect me to take over if my father is killed? It would be dangerous to go against him for control. We are preparing to fight to protect our pack, not so I can take over all the packs my father has seized.” Owen said to Liam.
The words I heard when the truth of what I was began to run through my mind over and over again. As the white wolf I was sent to fight for our kind, to protect, and to bring peace. If Owen’s father was murdering alphas and taking over their packs, these packs needed to be set free. Freeing them was part of what I was sent to do. Maybe Owen was not ready to take on this burden, but I needed to be. That’s why I was here.
“Owen, I know that fighting against your father and defeating him would be enough to bring you peace of mind, but all those people would be left with no alpha once he is dead. Maybe becoming alpha to that many packs seems like an impossible task, but I think it the one you were destined to take on. They can not be without an alpha. They have been forced into following him, but they are innocent!” I say.
He looked at me and I could see he was not happy about what I had said. I had not wanted to speak against him, but he was angry, and he was so focused on defeating his father that he had not yet seen the whole picture.
“Amelia is right Owen. If we think at this carefully, these people never wanted your father to be their alpha, but they have been forced into following them. If they didn’t they would become rouges and to some that is worse than death. If we can spare them we should try.’ Liam says agreeing with me.
“I will spare those who are willing to not kill for my father, but my duty is to our pack first! If any of the ones following my father kill one of our own, then they will not be spared. We can not ask our pack to stand against an enemy and not fight back. I can not ask our pack to stand back and be killed.” Owen said in a deep commanding tone.
I was a little taken aback by his words, had he thought that I wished for our pack to not defend themselves?
“War means that the line between an enemy and a friend is blurred. When it comes to doing the right thing, it means making a choice to be the one who fights for the least loss of life. We need to fight smart, and we need to end things with the least loss of life possible. These people are not being given a choice to not fight, when an alpha commands his pack they follow his word. Is that not true?” I ask Owen.
“Yes it is true, but the choice can still be made not to submit.” He said firmly.
I watched him closely and he seemed determined. I had only known Owen for a short time, and in that time I had never seen him in the role as Alpha. His loyalty and responsibility were to his pack first and always. I realized that being the white wolf meant that I may have to even fight against Owen. Because although the pack had accepted me, I was not actually one of them. The white wolf was always held as a possession but never included in a pack.
As I thought about this more I realized, I had not gone through any ceremony to officially make me one of the pack or even to be officially their Luna. I belonged to no one. I realized that even the mate bond between Owen and I was so strange. I could not control my abilities when I needed to but at certain times Owen could also not reach me. As if part of me was closed off to him and would not open and allow him inside. These thoughts began to cloud my mind and I soon had drifted deep into my own thoughts.
I needed to find out more about what I was, and I was not going to find out anything here. The doctor had mentioned that he knew someone who was able to find out something about the white wolf, maybe they could help me find out more. Maye there was someone I could speak to in person who would be able to help me understand some things. I need to go, and I needed to do it soon. Owen and Liam had begun discussing strategy and I decided to excuse myself. I told them I needed some fresh air and once I was outside I began the walk back to the hospital.
‘What are you planning?’ Anaya suddenly asked.
‘We need answers. I know you have been joined to others before as the white wolf, but this time is different, and we need to know why.’ I tell her.
‘I have been thinking the same. Everything about this time seems different, and there has to be an explanation. Why would the moon goddess allow the white wolf to be born to a human mother? Why is your bond with Owen so irregular? Why is the pup growing so fast? There are so many things that just don’t make sense.’ She replies.
She was right. Something was off, and if I was chosen for a reason then I needed to know why.
