Chapter 27
[Amelia POV]
Everything seems like a blur when Anaya finally loosens her hold on my body and my consciousness is given control again. We are in the pack hospital now waiting on news about Owen. He had been severely injured, and although I was still present within my own mind when everything happened, it was almost like a forgetful dream. I remember bits and pieces abut much of what happened is lost to me. Anaya may be blocking certain memories so I will not have to deal with the emotional pain. She was not speaking much now, and I didn’t know how to speak to her now. We were so out of sync that I was not sure how to fix our bond, or even where to start.
Eventually I know we need to talk and work through whatever is causing such disharmony between us, but not now. Not with Owen unconscious in the hospital recovering from the wounds the alpha had inflicted. Anaya was able to get Owen to the hospital in time to save his life, but he was struggling to recover. An injury from an alpha was difficult to recover from, and he would need time to heal. Anaya had chased the alpha and his mistress to the border before their scent trail ran cold. Many also searched several days after the incident, but there was no trail left to follow at this point. Owen’s mother and sister were emotionally drained after seeing what the alpha almost did to Owen, and that he had left them to become a fugitive in a way.
There was uncertainty in the pack as they were unsure if Owen would take on the role ass alpha after his father’s actions. As it stood, the leadership role fell to Owen’s mother as Luna, but with everything she was hardly up to the task. She was hardly sleeping or eating and spent most of her time by Owen’s bedside. Liam was doing his best to help as the future Beta of the pack, but even he was at a lose on some things. Something inside me was telling me to step up as future Luna, but I knew nothing about leading a pack. I also wasn’t a member of the pack yet, but I needed to do something if we wanted to give the pack piece of mind. Owen had not woken up for 5 days, and it seemed it would be many days more before he would be well enough to become alpha.
As much as I felt unqualified, I needed to step in and bring strength back to the pack. I needed to fix things with Anaya, and I needed to do it now. After visiting Owen in the morning and talking to him to let him know I was there, I told his mom I would return in a few hours. When I stepped outside the hospital, the energy around me seemed drained and unsettled. Through the mate link I could sense the pack but not at the level I would if I was an actual member, but through Owen’s emotions. I breathed in the chill air and walked toward our home. The wind danced through the trees playing a calming melody leading me to the right place to open my mind and contact Anaya.
I walked to a open clearing near our house, and sat in the soft grass that smelled like fresh rain. I sat and closed my eyes taking in slow breaths. The sounds around me slowly falling away as I fell into a trance like state.
‘Anaya? Can you hear me?’ I whisper.
‘Yes, I can always hear you Mia.’ She replies.
‘I am not sure where to start. Maybe it would be best if you explain everything to me. Whatever it is that I don’t seem to know.’ I tell her.
‘There is so much, it is hard to know the best way to explain. But I will do my best. To begin with, you are a white wolf. A rare but beautiful creature, we are the daughters and sons of the moon goddess herself. We are meant to appear only when we are needed. When a great threat is foreseen. I am actually quite old if you think of time as a physical thing, but in truth time is relative. I am as young as you, but I have lived many lives. In past lives I have fought for our kind and was given to a person who would be strong enough to lead our kind to peace again. So, when I was awoken in you, I was confused. You were so different from my past hosts; you were sweet and kind but fragile. I felt a need to protect you, but I didn’t know how with you denying what you are.
I felt this pull like the threat I was sent to fight was close and time was running out, and you were so stubborn and in such a mental state that I could not fulfill my purpose. I made so many mistakes trying to push you to find your strength and would become frustrated when you would pull away. When you shut me out, I was furious, but it gave me time to think. You were trapped in your self-doubt for so long and with no one to tell you how important you are. I should have explained to you sooner, but you are destined for something special and only you can be the one to fulfill it.’ Anaya says, pausing to let me take in her words.
‘Wow. So you were sent to be my wolf?’ I ask her.
‘Yes, most of our kind have their wolves inside them and they are and extension of themselves, but I am different. I was given to you to fulfill a specific purpose. I am a warrior, and I was sent to end a war.’ She says.
‘What war? I am not aware of a war?’ I reply.
‘It is unclear, because it has not yet passed, but it will devastate our kind and I was sent to make sure our kind survives. You had been born to a human mother who sheltered you from wolf life, so you did not spend enough time around wolves for me to get an idea of what has been going on. When you moved here I had hoped that finally we would have a way to get some information about any possible threats. Then Owen walked in and I knew that your destiny was beginning to reveal itself. Now with what has happened, I believe the reason I was sent is linked to this pack.’ Anaya says almost thinking out loud.
‘Do you think what the alpha did is the first step toward the war you say is coming?’ I wonder.
‘It seems likely, and the future alpha is your mate. There is a reason for you to bee here, and although the future is still unclear it is obvious that your place is here.’ Anaya says confidently.
‘So what do I do now? The pack is a wreck! Owen has still not woken up and his mother seems too emotionally wounded to focus on the packs needs.’ I say anxiously.
‘I think you need to lead the pack Mia, at least until the next alpha can be appointed.’ Anaya tells me cautiously.
My stomach churns thinking of taking on such a task, but for once I realize that I have been thinking only about myself and not enough about others. The pack needed me to stop worrying about my own feelings and insecurities and think about them. As future Luna, this was my responsibility.
‘What do I need to do first?’ I ask Anaya.
‘We need to show the pack what you are. There is legend about the white wolf, and although it may not be as spoken of as it used to be they will understand your uniqueness as a sign. You need to gather the pack and I will help you explain everything to them. Once they see and hear what you have to say, you will need to perform the Luna ritual and become one of the pack. They will have no choice but to follow you. Mia, I realized something else during our time apart. The reason I was joined with you, was because you are not a warrior. You are kind and compassionate, you are selfless and brave. I know you feel afraid, but it was never when it came to helping others. When it came to others, you always set yourself aside and you do everything you can to help.
With what happened, I see now that the pack doesn’t need a warrior right now. They need a healer, someone to bring them together but who will fight and die for them. You are that person, and with me helping you there is nothing stopping you from being exactly the person our kind needs to bring final peace.’ Anaya reassures me.
I had never thought of myself as anything like she described, but if I was chosen for this then there must have been a reason. There was no way I was going to back down, not now. Not ever. Tonight, I would join the pack and become their Luna. I will take on my role as their leader and protector, and I would take the first step in fulfilling my role as the White Wolf. Fate had brought me here and I was ready to be the one to bring peace.
I suddenly felt a chill run over me and a surge of energy flow through me. Suddenly I felt a presence in my mind, one that was not Anya.
“You are a child of the moon, a beacon of light to bring peace to all who call upon the moon goddess. You are the peace that will end the night. You are the White Wolf.” The voice said in my head and I felt an electricity run through me and when I opened my eyes they had changed to the ice blue of the white wolf and my body rose into the air hovering beneath the shadow moon of day, and light surrounded me.
I felt myself absorb the light into each pore of my skin and a pulse was released from my body along with a bright flash. Like the voice had said, I became a beacon of light sending hope to all.
“This light will be seen by all of the children of the moon, and they will know that hope has come.” The voice says softly.
With those final words my body was lowered slowly back to the ground, and I stood in front of the pack that I would soon call my own.
