Chapter 42

As fast as the light around me had appeared, it quickly vanished as a white mist into the air. I closed my eyes and took a deep breath as I felt a cold sensation all over me. When I opened my eyes again the three other people in the room were just pulling themselves back on their feet and looking at me in wonder.
“I am so sorry! I-I don’t know what happened!” I say following to my knees and apologizing over and over.
I could feel hot tears falling as I begged for their forgiveness.
“Kaiah, please do not be sorry. We did not realize the extent of your powers, or the power of the child.” The woman said wrapping a warm arm around me and helping me back to my feet.
“I still am not sure the full extent of my powers. They only appeared once before when I emerged, but never since. I don’t know how to control it; I am so sorry!” I say again.
“It was not you who was in control.” The elder says sitting once more. “The child was protecting you; it was his power we felt. He is indeed powerful. The threat we face must be very severe for such a powerful wolf to emerge.”
“What do you mean?” I ask him, sitting on the floor in front of him.
“Like you have been told before, no more than one white wolf has ever existed at a time. There has never been a need for another. This may also be why no white wolf has ever had a need for a mate or to carry a pup. So, for you to be with child, one that is so powerful, the threat we face must be far worse than we have in the past.” He says with a deep sigh.
“The alpha of our pack was my mate’s father. He turned on us and we drove him away. Word came to us not long ago that he has been killing other alphas and taking their packs. We still do not know what his plan is, but we know he wants revenge on our pack. I want to be ready to fight when he arrives but then I found out about my child, and I was not sure what would happen now. He has been growing so fast, it is all so strange! That is why I came here. I was hoping you could help me understand and maybe help me learn how to access my powers.” I explain to him, almost all in one breath.
The woman and Cheveyo look to him with serious concern and the elder looks at them and there is a moment of silence. I figured they were speaking through mind link and watched hoping I could get an idea of what they were saying by their faces. Their expressions looked serious and intense, which did not ease my mind of any of the panicking thoughts that already flooded it. A few moments later, the elder turns his attention back to me.
“Your child must have been sent to fight alongside you in the battle that is coming. It must have been foreseen, and the moon goddess fears for the survival of our kind. She must have realized one white wolf would not be enough. Yet, when I connected to the child there was something different about him. He is not like a white wolf at all. He is something much stronger.” The elder closes his eyes and lowers his head back.
I watch him in confusion and turn to Cheveyo. “What is happening?” I ask.
“He is trying to communicate with the moon goddess and ask her for clarity.” He tells me.
I nodded in understanding and turned to watch the elder. He looked peaceful, and he was sitting completely still. Everyone was silent for as long as the elder sat in this way, which felt like it had been 20 minutes or so. After some time, he lowered his head, but his eyes remained closed.
“The child you carry is a dark force, dark as night chasing after the dawn. He is the child of the eclipse and holds the power of the depths of earth and space. As you are light, he is night.” The elder says opening his eyes slowly.
I did not understand what he meant by those words. Was my child evil? Did he bring only death? If I was light why was he different from me?
“I don’t understand.” I tell him.
“The moon goddess sent you because you are pure and true, everything a white wolf should be. But you are the embodiment of love and compassion, which we will need in this fight. Although your power can be used as a weapon, it is not what you will use it for. You will bring unity and strength by binding all of us together. The child is a warrior, one to carry the burden of fighting for our kind’s freedom. He is strength and power to be wielded as a swift knife. The enemy we face is very great, because the enemy we face is more than a large army. It is brother against brother, killing for their freedom and enemies we have been hidden from will join in this fight to destroy what is left.” He tells us.
I was stunned silent. He was saying my child was a great warrior and would fight alongside the rest of us, but he would still be a child. Unless….
“If my child is to fight beside us in battle, it means he will grow quickly once he is born too?” I ask him.
“His growth will need to be quick, if he is to be trained and to harness his power.” The elder says.
“So, he is not an ordinary child, not even after birth. I was simply the vessel to bring him into the world. Is he even our child?” I ask feeling my heart tighten.
“He is every bit your child, he carries you within him. The fact that his father is an alpha has provided him with the strength he needs to withstand the strength he has been given. He was chosen, not created for this purpose. In truth, the moon goddess blessed you with the ability to carry a child hoping you would bring forth someone powerful enough to fight with you. Once she saw that you were carrying an alpha male, she chose him to be the one. You are a shield; he is a sword. You are both needed to bring peace. He will indeed not be like other children, but it is necessary. It is much to ask a mother to give up the years she would spend watching her child grow, but you will have some precious memories to cherish for a short time.” He says with a soft voice.
He words only broke my heart more. My child would grow so quickly, I would only have short moments of happiness with him before he is forced to fight. He did not ask for such a life, and the fact that he was my child meant I had forced this life on him. If I had not been so careless, I would not have forced an innocent child into a life that would soon be filled with death and violence. I had come here to find out what I was and what I could become, but all I have found is that I would give birth to a child who would never really be mine. He was chosen to be trained to kill, to grow fast enough to fulfill this purpose. What would become of him after there is no war to fight? What if he does not survive?
Why would the moon goddess give me such a beautiful gift for such a horrible purpose? Why would she steal my child’s life away for her own plans? This had not been a blessing, being chosen has become my curse.
I did not care about learning more about my own powers or their purpose, because although I was told my purpose was peace I didn’t care. All of my thoughts were on the child I carried with in me. I had cursed him by being his mother, and….
Oh god….
What is that pain?
What is happening?
I closed my eyes and felt an intense wave of pain rush through me and it knocked the wind out of me. I let out a deep groan and doubled over in pain.
“Luna! What is it?” Cheveyo asks rushing to my side.
“The baby, something is happening!” I say through gritted teeth.
“It is time, the baby will be with us soon.” The woman says in an annoyingly calm voice.
“No! No! Owen is not here! He cannot miss his son’s birth! Please, we need to wait!” I beg.
“I will send word for him to come!” Cheveyo says taking out his phone quickly.
“Luna, please do not worry. We will make sure your mate arrives in time for the birth. You need to keep your mind on your child and bringing him safely into the world. Take deep breaths, and I will call for a room to be prepared for you.” The woman stroked my back while sending a quick message on her phone.
Not long later, Natalia rushed into the room and kneeled beside me.
“Luna! Are you alright? How bad is the pain?” She asks taking my pulse.
“It came on so strong and sudden!” I say in between the groans of pain I released.
“It won’t be too long then, we need to move you now. Can you walk?” She asks.
I nod but the walk to a cabin close by was not easy with the intense pain I was feeling every few steps. This was all happening too quick, just like everything else that had happened to me so far. It was like I was rushed through an entire lifetime of things in a few short weeks, without a moment to even take a breath. I never knew my life would become like this, and I wished that for once time would stop and let me enjoy the things that had happened. But with another wave of pain, I knew that there was no time. This baby was coming, and that meant my time with him would soon be over.
