Chapter 46
(Amelia POV)
I woke to light rain falling on my windows, which had to be one of my favorite sounds. My eyes opened slowly, and my body felt heavy as I tried to sit up. My head was pounding and the sounds of the rain hitting the window sounded like hammers inside my head.
“Owen?” I ask into the darkness.
Nothing.
I stand and in the darkness try to find the door to our room, but instead hit my toe on a short table. My eyes were barely open, but on the impact of the strange object in our room I opened them wide enough to see I wad not in our room. I was in my apartment, the one above the café! What am I doing here? Where is Owen? I stumble to the light switch and as I blinked my eyes several times to adjust to the brightness my thoughts are confirmed. I was in my apartment again. How did I get here? Where is Owen, where are my pups? I can feel panic seep in as I opened the door to my apartment and ran down the stairs.
“Ah morning Amelia! Hey, can you help me grab the muffins from the oven?” Harper was busy mixing something and turned to look at me when I didn’t reply to her but stood frozen. “Hey you ok?”
She sets down the bowl she was mixing in and walks toward me looking me over to see if I was ok.
“Did you catch a cold already? I know this weather gets so wet; most newcomers take a while to adjust. After a few colds, your body gets used to the constant moisture. Do you need to take the day off to rest?” She asks with a concerned smile.
My mind is racing from confusion that her words sound like muffled hums in my ears.
“Owen? Where is Owen?’ I finally ask.
“Owen? I don’t think I know an Owen. Is he your boyfriend?” She asks with a knowing smile.
“I-I don’t know what’s happening.” I cover my face and drop to my knees.
“Hey, hey it’s ok. If you had a fever that was high last night, you may feel a little out of it. Let me see.” She says gentle touching my forehead with the back of her hand.
“Wooooh….You definitely don’t have a fever, you actually feel pretty cold. Maybe you should bundle up more! Do you want me to get you a blanket? A sweater?” She asks.
“No, I am ok. I will get changed really quick and help you.” I say still slightly out of it.
She says nothing else as I walk away and slowly climb the stairs to my apartment.
What in the world happened? This all seemed familiar, but how? How could I be back here? I closed the door behind me with a soft click of the lock, and I realized I must be dreaming. I walk to the table by bed and I turn my phone on and my eyes grow wide when I see the date. Did I travel back in time? Is time travel even possible? Well, I mean I was so sure back to the future could really happen for a while as a kid, but that was the only time I really thought much on the subject.
‘Don’t be stupid Mia, you didn’t time travel.’ Anaya suddenly chimed in.
‘What do you mean? What’s going on?’ I ask her.
‘The awakening.’ She says simply.
I hated when she did this, like seriously stop with the vague answers and just explain for once!
‘And that is?’ I ask annoyed.
‘We don’t have enough time to cover everything, because today you meet Owen and you don’t wan to miss that meeting. It is kind of important!’ She says.
‘I already met Owen, we mated and had pups and all that already happened!’ I say still not understanding.
‘Everything you saw was a vision. A vision of the future.’ Anaya says.
‘Um, What?’ I say trying to freak out.
‘Anaya everything you saw is supposed to happen in the coming weeks, but something goes wrong, and the future changed. We need to prevent that event from happening or many of our kind will be slaughtered.’ Anaya says in a serious tone.
‘I don’t understand.’ I say with my mind not able to wrap around what she was saying.
‘Ok, you saw what you were. You are a White Wolf, born from the power of the moon goddess. A chosen bringer of piece for all of her children. She chose you because she saw what you could become. You would be the one to bring peace. But when you came here, the future changed. Something has changed and you lose control and are killed. The vison you saw is your future, and that last moment you remember is the moment before your death.’ Anya says slowly.
I feel my legs grow weak and a slump down onto the nearest surface to catch my breathe.
‘But how could I have lost control of my powers; I barely knew how to use them.’ I ask feeling my anxiety grow.
‘There had to be something that triggered it. You are right, you would not have been able to summon that amount of power on your own. There had to be someone who provoked it, but it is unclear who that was. Whoever did this was hidden from foresight.’ Anaya replies.
‘Foresight?’ Yet another vague one-word thing that leaves me with a million questions.
‘The ability to glance into the future. The ability is limited, and only can be used when the threat is big enough that our kind vanish.’ Anaya tried to explain.
‘So, the goddess can see the future but only at certain times?’ I feel like a child again, asking dumb questions.
‘Yes, when the white wolf is born, the ability presents itself.’ Anaya replies.
‘I thought you said I was chosen!’ I say.
‘Yes, you were chosen by the fates.’ Anya replies.
‘The fates? I thought I was chosen by the moon goddess.’ I was really losing my patience and becoming impatient.
‘In a way it is both. The fates see all, and they relay that information to those who can use the knowledge they collected. The fates saw what you could become, but no one’s fate is truly set. They gave the goddess a choice. She could follow the thread that meant you would save her kind, or she could choose another. She chose you, but the fates saw that your future suddenly changed, and something had changed it. They know you would have a hard time accepting what you are and how hard you would struggle, but there is not time. We do not know at what point the future had become altered, so they decided to show you what will happen in hopes that you will emerge sooner and be able to detect the change before it happens.’ Anya explains.
My headache began to grow intensity as I listened to her. This was crazy! Not
‘Amelia, they have shown you what you can become. That you are meant to be someone important. They hope you will accept what you are sooner and if you are willing to accept this part of you, the emergence can be completed before any of those events take place. You will have your full abilities and you can change what you saw. If you let us help you, we can change your future.’ Anaya said almost begging me to believe everything she had told me.
‘Ok. Let’s say I believe any of this. If everything I saw in my vision was true, then I want to know everything. In my vision there were so many questions and things I didn’t understand. How can I trust someone who kept so many things from me? I need to be shown how to use my power if I am going to change the future, I need to be ready.’ I didn’t know where this confidence came from, but I was not about to back down now.
‘Very well.’ Anaya said. ‘This may feel a little strange, but you will not be harmed.’
I felt myself get lightheaded and as if I was slowly drifting into a deep sleep. The world around me fell away and I was in darkness.
