Chapter 64
Isabella’s POV
Tears of joy welled up in my eyes. Even though Lucas was married, his concern and gratitude were still there, and it made me feel so special. “Thank you, Lucas,” I whispered softly, even though he wasn’t there to hear it.
Ethan looked at me with understanding. “You mean so much to Lucas. He may be married, but he never forgets how important you are in his life. It’s a reminder that our bond of friendship remains strong even though everything has changed.”
I now wear the necklace around my neck, feeling the warmth between us. Deep in my heart, I know that this relationship, whether it’s with Lucas or Ethan, will continue to bring love and support to each other.
With Ethan’s warm embrace and the beautiful necklace adorning my neck, I feel ready to face any challenges that come my way. The love between us remains strong, and that is the most important treasure we can have.
I see that Ethan is no longer jealous of me, even though their relationship in the past was tinged with tension because Lucas liked me. This is a happy development and makes me feel more comfortable that we can have a better relationship. However, behind all that, I still sometimes feel sadness when I remember the baby that was miscarried.
In the silence of the night, when only soft sounds can be heard from outside, I sit on my bed looking at the ultrasound photos that are still neatly stored in an album. There is only one photo that is a memento of that pregnancy, but the picture is quite precious to me. “I’m sorry Mommy, who couldn’t take care of you,” I whispered softly, feeling tears welling up in my eyes.
Even though the pregnancy only lasted two months, the sense of loss was still very deep. The fetus wasn’t just what was in my stomach, it was the life I dreamed of, the hope that filled my heart, and the love I hadn’t had the chance to protect.
I’ve struggled to wipe away the tears and keep getting up, but sometimes memories of that baby come back to haunt my mind. Those moments make me realize how precious life is and every hope that comes with it.
However, at times like this, I also feel grateful to have Ethan by my side. He always tries to support me, to be a source of strength that helps heal the wounds in my heart. “Ethan...” I called softly, and without waiting long, he appeared at the door with a face full of concern.
“What’s wrong, honey?” he asked, immediately approaching and looking at me with affection.
“Nothing, I’m just a little lost in thought,” I replied, even though I knew I should share my feelings right now. He could sense it.
“If there’s anything you want to talk about, I’m here to listen,” he said softly, comfortably lacing his words.
I took a deep breath, trying to gather my courage. “I still feel sad sometimes about the baby we lost. Even though he only lived for a short time, he meant so much to me.”
Ethan reached for my hand, holding it tightly. “I know, Isabella. And it’s okay to feel that way. It wasn’t your fault, and feel your feelings—it’s part of the process.”
Hearing his words made my heart feel a little lighter. The sadness wouldn’t go away anytime soon, but Ethan’s support and understanding would help me move forward.
“Thank you, Ethan. I’m so lucky to have you by my side,” I said, looking up at him hopefully.
“Always, Isabella. We’ll get through this together, no matter how hard it is,” he replied, his warm embrace making me feel even more secure.
We sat together in silence, sharing our love. In my heart, I was determined to continue to remember our baby, but also to make room for the hope and happiness that I could still live.
A month later, I heard the happy news that Mia was pregnant. Mixed feelings arose in my heart when Ethan and I decided to visit Mia’s house to send her fruits as a congratulatory message. Seeing her happy brought a little warmth, although on the other hand, there was a pang of envy that crept inside me.
When we arrived at Mia’s house, she greeted us with a cheerful smile. “Thank you for coming! This is so sweet of you,” she said, accepting the fruit basket I brought.
Mia looked fresh and energetic. “I don’t experience nausea, dizziness, and can eat comfortably. In fact, I still work at the bookstore,” she said proudly. And for a moment, I felt a needle of envy stabbing my heart. Back when I was pregnant, I felt unbearable nausea and dizziness, making me unable to do anything.
Out of the corner of my eye, I saw how excited Mia was to tell me about her pregnancy journey. Although I tried to welcome the good news for her, remembering my bitter experience made my heart break a little.
Ethan, who was sitting beside me, didn’t miss the change in my tone. He reached for my hand and held it tightly. “Don’t be sad,” Ethan said softly, realizing what I was feeling.
I tried to smile, but I knew she could sense my sadness. “I just feel… jealous. I had a really hard time getting pregnant and couldn’t do anything,” I said, my voice shaking.
Ethan nodded, and without saying a word, he tightened his grip on my hand. The warmth he gave me reminded me that even though I felt lost, I wasn’t alone.
Mia didn’t seem to notice that my mood was starting to sour. She continued to tell me about her pregnancy plans and how she and Lucas were preparing to welcome a new member to the family. When I looked at her with a bitter smile, I knew I needed to sort out my feelings and try to let go of my sadness.
