Chapter 40

After classes, Cassie, along with Peter, Steven, and Daniel, headed to the cafe. With a hint of annoyance in her tone, Cassie was describing her struggles with finals. She ran a hand through her hair and said, "I am juggling between job and college, Still I've fallen behind in all my subjects," she sighed "It's like no matter how much I study, I just can't catch up."

Peter leaned forward, "Finals are ruthless," he added in an unexpectedly soft voice. "I can help you study if you need it."

Cassie sipped her coffee. "You helped plenty while mom was in the hospital. I don't want to cause you any trouble."

Cassie turned to face Steven. "How do you balance being the football team captain and getting through your junior year?"

Steven shot up his shoulders. "Numbers never mattered to me because I never had to maintain my scholarship."

Daniel smiled and looked mischievous with his eyes. "If nothing else works, we'll just bring coffee from here to the professors to bribe them. The pastries are too good to pass up."

Cassie laughed, and the sound of it made her feel better. As she looked around the table, she felt a new kind of friendship that was both warm and comfortable. They acted like there was nothing else in the world besides their small group. Every day, their friendship grew stronger.

Cassie was still amazed at how she and Peter had become friends after hating each other at first sight. It all began after that rough time with Ryker, when her feelings were all over the place and she thought her whole world was falling apart. Also when Peter showed up at the hospital after Daniel asked him to help her with studies. Peter, Daniel, and Steven become very close. Everyone found this new way of being friends to be interesting.

When Ryker and his friends walked into the café, their loud laughter caught everyone's attention except for Cassie and the boys. While making fun of a poor guy, his voice was filled with sneering disgust, his eyes fell on Cassie. She was at a corner table with Peter, Daniel, and Steven. Their laughing mixed with hers, making her feel like the world didn't exist.

For a split second, Ryker's confidence wavered. His sarcastic tone died in his mouth, and a hollow ache took its place. Cassie looked so happy and at ease with her new friends. Peter sat next to her and casually put his arm over the back of her chair. Daniel and Steven leaned in and paid close attention to her. It looked like Cassie was having a great time, but he wasn't included at all.

A sharp twinge of jealousy and regret shot through Ryker; Cassie had replaced him with Peter; his carefully thought-out plan to exact his revenge had not only failed, it had backfired greatly; and in the process, he had lost more than a game, he had lost someone he truly fell in love with.

Daniel asked. “How are your preparations for Romeo and Juliet going?”

Cassie and Peter looked at each other and stood up immediately. Daniel and Steven were taken aback. Steven asked. “What is wrong with you both?”

Peter asked Daniel. “Lit is tomorrow. Right?”

Daniel nodded and then Cassie whined. “I wanted to rest before heading for work but now I have to study and make notes for tomorrow.”

Steven asked. “Shouldn’t you guys already be prepared for this project because Professor already stretched the date because of Cassie being absent due to Ruth’s health?”

Cassie while gathering her stuff. “It’s easier said than done.”

Peter and Cassie after about half an hour sit at her place and exchange their point of view for the drama. Peter while clutching a pen in his fingers “I don’t think anyone should act stupid like Juliet no matter how much you are in love with someone.”

Cassie looking at him pressed her lips around the back of her pen and that was pretty distracting for Peter but still, he managed to remain calm. When Peter finished she pulled out the pen. “When you are in love nothing seems risky to you.”
Peter felt as though he was beginning to develop a soft spot for Cassie, but when he began to doubt that she was cheating on his friends, he once again started to despise her. Today, as they sat at Cassie's study table, nothing seemed pretty to him except Cassie. He shrugged his shoulders and laughed. “This is ridiculous.”
Cassie’s pen fell on the floor, she bent down to pick it up and asked. “Have you ever been in love?”

Peter’s eyes fell deep at her cleavage and he felt a flinch in his dick. Peter thought his attraction to her was due to her intelligence but today something is happening that he was unable to understand. Cassie looked at him and he was staring at her. Cassie adjusted her top and snapped her fingers at him. “Where you lost?”

Peter shook his head. “N-nothing”

Cassie asked. “You were staring at me.”

Peter was taken aback but managed to lie smoothly. “No, I was thinking.”

Cassie highly doubted that he was telling the truth so she abruptly asked. “What exactly you were thinking?”

Peter cleared his throat. “I was thinking about love because, as far as I know, when you are in love with someone, you don’t share that person with anyone.”

Cassie raised her brow and nodded because she knew where it was heading. “I know what you are talking about.”

Peter shook his head. “No, you wouldn't understand what I was talking about because, in my opinion, it's impossible to be in love with two guys at the same time, and I'm curious as to how Daniel and Steven could avoid becoming jealous of each other.”

Cassie started to get a little annoyed with Peter’s typical mindset. “I think we should focus on Romeo and Juliet.”

Peter leaned forward, “Come on, I thought we were friends. I want to know if Steven and Daniel are also in love with each other.”

Cassie squinted. “Eww, no that's not how it works. They love me and one person feels safe when I am with the other one. They don’t feel jealous because they trust each other with their lives.”

Peter once again lost when Cassie was talking Peter wanted to grab her by the waist and crash his lips onto her fully plumped lips Peter was shutting down his feelings by talking about Cassie’s love life.
