Chapter 68



Sapphire opened two buttons of her shirt and picked up her phone.

"Sorry about everything." Sapphire apologized as soon as Nancy picked the call.

"You don't sound fine. What's going on? Is it work again? I have told you not to over-stress yourself. It's good to earn but what's the use if you ain't healthy to enjoy your wealth?" Nancy quarreled over the phone.

Sapphire was so lot of words. She bit her lower lips. Nancy knew nothing about Rowan and the Conglomerate, her father's best friend wanted her to get. Indeed, Nancy would freak out but, it was better now or never.

"I have to tell her." She mumbled to herself as she took a deep breath.

"Hey girl, are you there? Is something wro..." Sapphire interrupted. She has finally made up her mind to explain everything to her friend.

"Ye... Yess, I am." She paused and in a lower voice, she spoke, "I met someone."

Only if Sapphire was with Nancy, she would have seen the look on her face. The phone was dead quiet for a minute and then a loud voice followed.

"OMG" Nancy screamed, "It's a guy, right?" She asked excitedly.

Sapphire rolled her eyes. She knew what Nancy was thinking and of course not. Nothing was going on and for her, it was a never.

"Yeah but..." Nancy interrupted.

"This is so cool. Is he rich? I hope he is as handsome as Drake?" Nancy asked knowing how much Sapphire crushed on Drake. He was her celebrity crush and she always told Nancy that one day, she would get married to Drake.

In fact, Sapphire was a die hard fan of Drake. She followed him on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and one day, Nancy got her stuffing the internet for his number. Exactly. She was obsessed with him. Play any song that belongs to him or he's been featured, and Sapphire would sing it so perfectly. Though she always acted like a boss lady, she still has the girlish attitude in her. Play his song and watch an angry face blush. Even when Drake was dating Rihanna, she cried a lot wishing it was her he was flirting with. Drake was the only lover Sapphire had.

"He is handsome but don't dare compare anyone to Drake." Sapphire warned even when the truth was that Rowan was more handsome than Drake.

" He he he he, i knew you'd get vexed with that. So, are you two making out already?" Nancy teased while chuckling at the background.

"Nancy!" Sapphire yelled.

Nancy knew exactly what she was doing so, when she heard Sapphire called out her name, she knew it was a win.

"What? Can't I ask that? I'm your best friend, i just wanted to know." Nancy defended herself.

" Well, he is just an annoying work mate for now." Sapphire responded dryly.

" Awwwwn." Nancy exclaimed and it pained Sapphire.

"What's that for? It's complicated. We are fighting for one goal and that is to get the Conglomerate. He won't let me win. And sees me as a weakling. The worst path of it is, no one seems to be on my side. Through their actions, i know they love Roman." Sapphire complained bitterly.

" Nice name he's got. Lol. Well, have you two try to work things out? I mean, since it's like a winning contest for the two of you. Surely, the weaker one will have to step down for the other." Nancy said thoughtfully.

" I do know that. It's just that, I have to be the one. I was put in the will for a reason and i have to try my best to prove to everyone that I'm capable of handling anything." Sapphire debated. She never knew the reason why the man put her in his will.

"I understand dear."

"He even arrested Old Lan. The time you called, I was in the police station. Well, it's all complicated. It wasn't, totally his fault." Sapphire explained.

" What's your plans then?" Nancy asked curiously.

" I want to get a new secretary. Old Lan can't think like us. He is aged and so is his style.

"Not a bad idea tho. A fresh dude that can steal your heart should come in." Nancy joked and burst out laughing.

" Get out!" Sapphire exclaimed, "I'm being serious."

"Okay. How is it going so far? I meant your efforts. Because, i know you can do anything you put your mind into." Nancy hyped her and she felt reasonable again.

"Not going well as i planned or expected it to be." Sapphire stopped when she heard a noise at the background, " What was that?" She asked changing the topic.

"Oh, it's nothing though. I wanted to tell you. George and I are back again. I'm spending the night at his place." And just before Sapphire would reply, a manly voice spoke.

"Hey Sapphire, how are you doing?" His voice hasn't changed.

George and Nancy broke up a year ago. Though, they were still friends. Sapphire never thought they were going to get back together again.

"Fine. So good to hear you two are back." She uttered dryly.

" I know right." George responded.

"Yeah girl, I didn't think so too. You should get a man there as well. You know it's been too long. Move on and fall in love." Nancy urged and Sapphire furrowed her brows.

Her former relationship made her hate men. She felt they were all the same. He stabbed her deep and left without a word. Since then, Sapphire has refused to love again. She choose to work instead.

"I will when I'm interested." Sapphire answered dryly. She was literally enjoying her single life. Her problems and work kept her busy enough to forget what falling in love felt like, "I'd go now. Take care. Byyeee..." She ended the call before Nancy could reply.

Old Lan who was eavesdropping to her conversation turned back, when he bumped into the maid carrying a tray. The cup of water on the tray, fell down and the glass cup, broke to pieces. The sound echoed

After leaving Mr. Hollard's house, she entered her car and tried to calm herself down. If only she knew it was going to be this embarrassing and a total waste of time, she wouldn't have dared to visit. Mr Hollard was truly an annoying old man and he was good at pissing Sapphire off!.
'It didn't go well?" The driver asked as he turned back to look at her. One would tell she didn't have a good night rest. Her eyes looked puff and her mood was greatly soured. She looked a bit better before she entered but it became worst as she came out of the compound and the driver couldn't help but show concern to his boss.

Sapphire sighed and hissed as she her head replayed the look on Mr Hollard's face and her eyes tuned red.'So because I'm a woman. Is that why they look down on me? They think i can't get that position? Really?" Sapphire asked as if she was referring it to the driver. The poor middle aged man just stared at her like he was watching a TV show of his favorite characters but the truth was that he hated to see his boss like this.

'I know you can." Mr. Joel, the driver uttered as if trying to encourage her not to give up. He knew her to be brave and intelligent, a strong woman that fought her way up, all alone. No siblings, no parents, no lover. The only thing was her lack of respect. She acts like she could get anything. But that was just the truth! She had always gotten every thing she wanted no matter how hard it was as she was a very courageous woman and a determined person at that. She had never been like this before. She was always the one taking the lead and making her opponent regret facing her off anytime and all the time but why? Why was things turning away from her this time around?
Is Rowan that much of a person? Is he truly Insurmountable? The answer caused the driver to shiver in fear!.

'Thanks" Sapphire replied grudgingly. Nothing would make her happy today again as her morning already proved silly. . "So, what is next?" She said and her eyes met with Mr. Joels'.

'I should be asking you that. Maybe, go back home?" Mr. Joel suggested with a smile on his face.

Sapphire was quiet for about a minute before concluding on something. The more she wasted time, the more Old Lan would stay in jail. It was obvious no one was going to help her. They didn't want to be on the bad side. So she thought but the truth was, her attitude was creating enemies. She had to do something to help Old Lan, 'Take me to Rowan." She uttered with a low tone. She didn't want to do this but old Lan was too old to stay in the cell for too long and she didn't want to regret this...

Mr. Joel understood her and nodded, 'Okay. Put on your seat belt." He reminded her and smiled inwardly. He really wanted to see and talk to Pa yang too.

However, the drive to the company was very quiet, Sapphire couldn't help but think about how the meeting would be. She and Rowan were never the best type of people to be in the same place as they never agreed on the same thing before. She was nervous about what would happen today and as soon as the car parked near the entrance, She got out without a word. She sighed one last time and calmed her mind... " He might be cold and all but he is not God!" She told herself and her heart immediately became calm.. She looked so determined that Mr. Joel wondered what the poor lady was up to. Though he wished everyone would understand her just like him and Old Lan does but it was difficult... Very difficult for people to understand her rude behaviors despite her stunning looks!.

Mr. Rowan was in his office and so busy checking out all the paperwork when Sapphire barged the door open and walked in. Behind her was his secretary. She looked fearful and gave her boss a sad look. She had earlier tried to stop Sapphire from coming in but, she just didn't want to listen. And the lady knew if it continues, she would one day kiss her well paid job a goodbye. She was so mad at Sapphire that she wished she could drag her out no matter what her status might be but Rowan nodded at her and gave her the permission to leave without looking angry at all.

'Your new habit of barging in without permission is quite impressive." Rowan smiled at their direction. But the smile was quite cold and eery.

'It is not like you're banging a girl and doesn't want anyone in. This is an office not your house." Sapphire responded and the secretary behind her almost cried. Her boss was never a calm person!

'Sir, I am so..." His secretary, Angelina didn't even finish her sentence when Rowan winked at her reassuringly. Rowan knew she tried her best to stop Sapphire, so, why should he blame the lady? He really had no reason to and he wasn't at all.

'It is fine. You can leave." Rowan answered calmly with his eyes still on Sapphire. Angelina left them but was still not sure if her boss has forgiven her. It was the second time such a thing was happening and Rowan wasn't the type to give people chances. He was never calm and every one knew that. After the secretary left, Rowan turned to Sapphire and frowned a little 'You see how you scared her, huh?" He asked.

Sapphire rolled her eyes and sat down without being permitted to, 'And so?" She asked back. Rowan shook his head in disappointment. He almost forgot she was a savage. She would never change her ways but it wasn't like he wanted her to, anyway!.
