Chapter 31

Emily's POV
"Emily!!! You've let me down so much! I set up such an easy investigation for you, and you ran back to the office to slack off!"
Fiona came back after I returned to the office, which shocked me. And I had just returned to the office when I saw my work permit was placed on my desk.
I asked Lilly who brought it over and Lilly told me it was the company janitor who picked it up outside the office and brought it in.
"Has Fiona been back while I've been away?"
"No, dear. I've been working here and haven't seen Fiona."
Lilly's words made me begin to wonder if I had misunderstood Fiona, and just then Fiona came through the door. Before I could see her, her accusing words had entered my ears.
"I didn't! Ms. Cady. I called you before I came back, but your phone was off! I was thrown out as a spy. You were upstairs, and that nurse told me there was no one to invest in their hospital!"
My anger exploded at this moment.
Fiona had targeted me over and over again. Every day I came to work worrying about what she would give me to do today that I couldn't accomplish. I'm fed up with this!
"Ms. Cady. Why did you turn off your cell phone when you went to see the hospital director? Why did you take me to see a fake client and make me do research that wasn't even remotely useful? We agreed to meet in front of the hospital by midnight. I waited for you there for an hour on a hungry stomach and you didn't even show up! You're simply fooling me!"
"Emily. Not every investment is told to the employees. You're always making excuses for your failures. Would I have arranged for you to survey if it didn't work? Why do you always think very badly of me? If you can't even do this little thing right now, how am I going to give you more important work?!"
Everyone was looking at Fiona and me, including employees from other departments who were also attracted by the sound of our quarrel.
I could no longer refute Fiona and vent my anger and dissatisfaction.
No matter what I said, they would think I was a bad employee who didn't take my job seriously.
"Ms. Cady. I have done the job you asked me to do. But I would like you to keep your phone open at all times next time you take your employees out. Your behavior of turning your phone off after leaving an employee in a public place is very offensive!"
I handed that questionnaire to Fiona, not sparing a single expression on her face. But she was so cunning that I couldn't tell anything from her face.
Fiona didn't accuse me again this time. She took the questionnaire and went back to her office. I watched her back as she left and suddenly I regretted agreeing to stay with Andre.
Everything that had happened in the past few days had made me feel very tired. I had never been so tired, from my mind to my body. Every part of my body felt very weak.
"Emily. Are you okay? Don't get too upset, Ms. Cady, she's just like that. Maybe she's jealous of you because you took Mr. Vincent's car home. All the female employees in the company who have had contact with Mr. Vincent have been bullied by her."
"Yes. I just saw that Emily's work ID was thrown out of the car. I think it was Ms. Cady who did it. She stole your work permit so you couldn't prove your identity to security."
I always knew that Fiona liked Andre, I understood that from the day I first arrived. But I couldn't understand why Fiona was giving me a hard time when there were so many female employees who had entered Andre's office.
  "Andy. Do you know Fiona?"
When I got home in the evening, Andre called.
Fiona's behavior made me very angry, and I felt suspicious when I remembered the day she told me that all the people who wanted to have sex with Andre had been kicked out of the company.
Fiona liked Andre, and she must have wanted Andre too.
Why did she stay in the company? Did Andre simply not know that Fiona liked him?
"I don't know Fiona, I just know that she is a very good and leading employee at work. She has done a great job on every task I have given her. Although there have been some recent actions that have made me wonder about her, that doesn't negate the fact that she is a great person."
Andre expresses his opinion of Fiona very objectively. He didn't seem to know that his excellent female employee had something different in mind for him.
"Baby. Did something happen to you today? You sound tired. Did Fiona give you a hard time again?"
Andre's concern made me feel a lot better. I didn't tell him about my day with Fiona. I didn't want Andre to think that his girlfriend was someone who only talked badly about others.
"No, Andy. I missed you and Kate. I feel so lonely with only me at the villa. I've gotten used to your arms and I'm having some trouble sleeping by myself."
"Baby, I'm really happy to hear you say that. I miss you so much too. But... Please do tell me if you are unhappy with anything in the company. I let you stay in my company to protect you not to hurt you."
I promised Andre, and we didn't hang up on each other, listening to each other's breathing sleeping as if we were lying together.
"Emily, wait a minute. Everyone, please put down what you're doing. I want to give a special shout-out to Emily for the great job she did yesterday!"
Fiona and I were like enemies, but she was praising me with great enthusiasm today, which made me a little unsure of what to do.
"Ms. Cady. Thank you for your compliments. Is there anything else you want to see me about?"
I wanted to get away from Fiona as soon as possible. I felt she must have come up with some more bad ideas to use against me. There was no way she could be so warm and friendly to me!
  "Emily. Follow me."
I was pulled to the office by Fiona.
I was worried that she was going to embarrass me with something unimaginable again. She was always like this, whenever she was going to give me a hard time, she would act like she was very nice to me.
I saw her take a document out of her handbag and hand it to me.
Why was the document Andre gave in her handbag?
Company assignments are usually arranged directly by Andre. The document should be locked in a special drawer or cabinet after handing it to Fiona, but now she handed it to me.
"Emily. I know it's not fair to you, but I'd like to say it's Mr. Vincent's opinion so you have to listen. This is a new job assignment and I need you to complete a risk assessment of it as well as a profit assessment. If you do a great job, you can become a regular employee. If you don't do a great job, you'll have to end your internship and leave the company."
"Is this really what Mr. Vincent gave you? Ms. Cady. Can I know why he made such a decision?"
I knew it was all Fiona's idea. I had just talked to Andre on the phone yesterday and he hadn't told me about it. He wouldn't let me leave the company.
"Yes. I know it's hard to understand. But Mr. Vincent thinks your personality is so bad that you can only stay if you're good enough."
  If I wasn't Andre's girlfriend, maybe I would have believed Fiona's words.
I looked at this assignment about the mall in my hand and was already sure inside that this was another one of Fiona's plots.
