Chapter 59
Chapter 59
Emily's POV
I feel so relieved now that I've told Andre all my concerns, and Andre's tolerance and understanding have helped me to try to accept what marriage can bring.
I'm starting to stop worrying about things that haven't happened yet, and I trust Andre, and I trust my relationship with him even more. We may still argue about things, or get angry. But we will never be separated. Andre and I will always be honest and seek each other's advice on everything.
And the most important thing is that I've been very busy lately so I haven't had the experience to think about anything else. I started working and went to Jane's villa to learn the social etiquette of the elite family.
I'm always very nervous about learning these new things, and although I'm not a bad learner, I always act awkward when I'm in Jane's presence because I'm too nervous.
Fortunately, Jane is a very patient teacher. No matter how many times I made a wrong move or gesture, she would patiently correct my mistakes and never angrily accuse me.
Jane told me that the default social etiquette of these elite families would help me to establish a good social relationship with the businessmen's wives very quickly.
They would often invite me to tea parties or banquets, which were very important things that could also help Andre's career from the side.
"I don't understand what goes on between elite families, but I think Jane has a point, and these manners she's teaching you will always come in handy when you and Andre get married, Emily."
I took a day off from class with Jane this weekend to visit Hellen where she lives, she is now in excellent health and has no problem at all living alone.
Hellen had heard about my recent study and she was very much in agreement with Jane's decision. Hellen had become much more lively because the reason that she often went out shopping with Jane after recovering from her illness.
"You're right, Hellen, so I'm taking these seemingly very difficult rituals very seriously. I hope I can learn them all and remember them before I get married."
When I said the word marriage, Hellen took my hand with a curious look on her face. She came to my side, and there was no third person in the room beside her and me, but she asked me in a whisper, "Emily, did Andre propose to you? You're no longer resistant and evasive when it comes to marriage, but you're all happy."
I didn't expect Hellen to know my innermost thoughts all along but thinking that she was my mother and that the only people in the world who knew me best were Andre and her, I didn't think it was surprising that Hellen could guess my innermost thoughts.
"I've just figured out that I like Andre, and that I'm going to marry him and never be apart. So I'm not anxious and worried, but I still don't want to get married too soon, and I'd prefer to be able to continue working afterward instead of staying home and just going to tea parties or banquets. I don't want to be dependent on Andre for all my finances after I get married, it would make me very insecure."
It's something I haven't told Andre yet, and I don't know how to make it clear to him. Because many people would choose to be stay-at-home moms instead of going out to work.
I told Hellen about this idea in the hope that she could give me some valid advice. I wasn't going to change my mind, but I needed someone to support me.
"Emily, although I support your idea. But I think this is something you need to discuss with Andre, tell him all your inner expectations and thoughts, and don't hold back. I believe Andre will also choose to support you as I did, but Jane there you can't go to her by yourself and say that all the women in the Vincent family who marry the heir will give up their jobs to become housewives after the marriage. There is no way you can change Jane's mind alone, Andre will help you if he supports your idea."
Hellen gave me very good advice and I think what she said is worth thinking over. Hellen always has many life lessons that I don't understand yet and I enjoy talking to her.
No one would ever ask a boyfriend's mother directly to disagree with her, and I certainly couldn't. It was up to Andre, who is Jane's son, and Jane would always listen to him.
I spent the whole day at Hellen's and we talked about many things. I didn't return to Andre's villa until after dinner.
By that time Andre had picked Kate up from Jane's cottage and had dinner. We went back to our room and left Kate alone in the living room to watch a children's program.
"Andre, I have something I want to tell you. I hope I can stay with the company after I get married. Or if I can't be at the office, I can open a coffee shop downstairs from the office. I don't want to be a housewife after I get married, I want to be able to have my own business or something ...... Anyway, I want to be able to have my things to take care of instead of attending other wives' tea parties all the time."
My voice was getting quieter and quieter, and I lowered my head, afraid to look at Andre's expression. He had grown up in the Vincent family and his mind had matured. I worried that he would decide, as Jane had, that women had to be housewives after they were married, or after they were married to him.
I was worried that he would get angry and feel anger because of my words. Although Andre doesn't lose his temper often and he has always been a gentle and considerate partner, I have seen him look terrible when he reprimands his employees in anger.
"Emily, I'm glad you're telling me this. I agree with you, and I understand how boring that life can be because I used to watch Jane live such a boring life when I wasn't an adult."
Andre was so happy that I was surprised to look up and see his smiling face. He seemed very happy that I was telling him what was on my mind and that I thought the life of a housewife was uninteresting.
I suddenly had some hope that this would work, that Andre might be able to persuade Jane to give up the idea of making me a housewife.
"Really? Thank you, Andre, for understanding me. But I might need your help because I don't know how to bring this up with Jane, you know I get nervous just seeing Jane especially after she started teaching me, etiquette classes. And she seems very determined to make me a housewife, and I'm worried that my opinion will make her angry.
"Of course, Emily. don't worry, I'll change Jane's mind. you won't stay at home without a job after you get married."
Andre agreed to my request without any hesitation in my expectant gaze, he was very confident that this would work out, but I couldn't help but feel a little uneasy inside thinking about Jane's beautiful but serious face.
Jane didn't seem too easy to persuade to succeed, could Andre do it?
Until I went to work on Monday, there was never an answer to this matter. I returned to the office and was warmly welcomed by the project staff, who didn't alienate me because I had taken too long a leave or because of my status, but were just as enthusiastic as before.
"Emily, I missed you so much, I haven't seen you for a long time."
Andy gave me an excited hug when he saw me. I went back to my desk, where the decoration hadn't changed at all and was even still clean and tidy, probably because Andy cleaned it every day.
At noon, all the colleagues went to have lunch. I got a call from Jane and went to a cafe next to the office.
My heart was very nervous. Jane must have taken the initiative to meet me because Andre had told her what I thought. Although I agreed to this meeting, my heart was very nervous and I was worried that Jane would accuse me of not knowing anything because of it.
"What should you do if someone introduces you to a businessman's wife that you haven't met before?"
Things didn't seem to be as bad as I thought, and Jane didn't say anything to accuse me. She remained calm and graceful, and even gave a mini-examination on the etiquette course I had recently taken.
I told Jane all the correct answers very accurately and she nodded her head in satisfaction before talking to me about what she thought of my proposal.
"Emily, I think it should be clear to you that every wife of the Vincent family heirs has been a full-time wife because the people who have to attend the wives' tea party have almost no time to work.
I'm not going to deny you the idea of working, I've lived a boring life for many years and I feel very bored, but you have to promise me that you will go to the wives' tea party when it's needed because it will be a help to Andre's work.
Also, Andre will sign a prenuptial agreement with you to organize your two prenuptial properties, and this company that Andre runs will have nothing to do with you no matter how much profit you make afterward, and all you will get is your legal salary. Is all this acceptable to you?"
"Of course, I can accept it."
This was the first time Jane had said so much in front of me, and every word had something to do with my marriage to Andre. I didn't hesitate to say yes to her request. I loved Andre and wanted to marry him not because of how rich he was or how much property I could get!
These things do not mean anything to me, and I am certainly willing to help Andre, who will be my husband in the future, and these are certainly what I should do.
Jane was very satisfied with my answer, and after we talked a few more words, she got up and left the cafe. I watched Jane get into the limo and leave the office.
I took out my cell phone and tried to call Andre to tell him that Jane had agreed to let me stay on at the office. An ear-splitting scream startled me into looking up at where it was coming from!
A car was speeding in my direction!
