Chapter 35
Emily's POV
Andre? Why is he here?
I saw Andre coming towards us and pushing Nathan away from me, even though nothing was going on, I was worried that Andre might have misunderstood.
"It's you? Emily. How come you're still in contact with him and came out to eat with him? Shouldn't you be at the office right now?"
Andre recognized Nathan, and he misunderstood that Nathan and I had been in contact after that day.
I had to speak up and explain to him how Nathan and I had met again.
"Nathan is the head of Jack's Mall. I came here today just to talk to him about work matters, and I'm done talking now. Nathan helped me when I accidentally fell when I stood up."
Andre didn't say anything, he reached out and pulled me to his side, "Nathan? If you're done talking, I'm going to take Emily away."
Andre didn't even give me a chance to say goodbye to Nathan before pulling me up to the second floor.
I thought he was angry about what had just happened, and I thought Andre was behaving too rudely, which he never did before.
I smiled apologetically at Nathan and then he waved goodbye to me and left the restaurant. Instead, I was taken by Andre to the second floor to accompany him to eat with his clients.
"Andy, stop the car and I'll walk back to the office by myself. If we go any further, we'll be seen by the company staff... Oh my God, Andy, what are you doing?"
Andre's sudden braking almost made me bounce off the top of the car seat. I tried to turn my head to look at him angrily, and Andre nervously removed my hand from protecting my head.
"I'm sorry, I didn't expect this to happen, I was too impulsive. Let me see. Did it hurt you?"
"Andy! What's wrong with you? You look so angry. Did that client piss you off?"
I had been watching Andre all the way, and if he was in a good mood he would have talked to me while driving, but this time he didn't say a word.
"No, baby, no one's pissing me off. I just don't understand why we can't let the people at work know about our relationship. It would help you and Fiona would stop giving you a hard time!"
I sighed. I didn't expect Andre to be angry for this reason.
The gap between Andre and I was too big, and if people knew about our relationship, they would just think I was Andre's plaything instead of his fiancée.
"Andy, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to hide the fact that you're my boyfriend. I'm just worried that our relationship going public will hurt you like it did last time. And I want to have the same environment as a regular intern, not be treated preferentially just because I'm your girlfriend."
"If you insist on doing that, I won't object to you. But I want you to be clear that I'm not afraid of negative repercussions."
Andre opened the car door to let me out. He still looked upset, and I didn't know how to comfort him, so I just walked out of the car in silence.
"Emily! How was the conversation today?"
When I got back to the office, Lilly put down the papers in her hands and asked me about my day.
"Not bad. I asked him questions based on the file you gave me and his answers were satisfying. I also looked at the architectural design of the mall, and I think if it can be built the investor should not lose money."
My heart was very unsure, it was all going too well. But Nathan's words made it impossible for me to find any mistake.
"That's great! You can start evaluating after you've visited the address of the mall."
"Emily, it's the weekend, what are you going to do?"
I had an appointment with Nathan today to check out the site, which was in the suburbs some distance from Andre's villa, so I got up early to wash and put on my makeup.
I moved as gently as I could, hoping the noise I was making wouldn't wake Andre, but I failed.
"Andy. Honey, I forgot to tell you. I'm going to a construction site with Nathan today and I won't be back for lunch. You remember to get Kate to eat more vegetables, I took her for a physical earlier and the doctor said she's put on some weight."
"You should tell that to the maid. Besides, I'm going with you." Andre got up from the bed and dressed as fast as he could.
He was the owner of the company and had more experience in this area than I did, so I didn't say no to Andre.
"Emily, Mr. Vincent. Welcome to you. The mall is over here, come with me."
Nathan greeted us warmly, not minding in the least that there was suddenly one more person.
He led us to the mall that was under construction.
"A hotel was originally planned to be built here, but it closed down because the previous owner was not good at running it. I bought them because there are schools, hospitals and even apartment buildings nearby. This is a great address for a mall!"
I looked to the side and sure enough, I saw a school not far away. Across from the school was an apartment building, but it looked a little old and I wondered how long it would last in use.
"Looks good."
Andre nodded from the sidelines, and I suspected he hadn't even looked at the environment carefully. I could sense that he was speaking in a somewhat casual tone as if he didn't care if the mall in front of him was profitable.
Nathan explained to us the purpose of each floor of the mall. I looked at the four-story mall in front of me and felt very familiar.
I think I've seen a picture of it somewhere, but it's being renovated now, so I can't remember what it looked like.
Wait a minute! Who is that?
I saw a familiar figure disappearing around the corner, something like Toby, but I couldn't quite identify it because it was so far away.
I wanted to follow him, but then the phone rang. "Hello, Su, what's up?"
"Emily, I'm sorry. I didn't ask for any information about the mall. But a friend of mine told me that that address was originally a hotel, run by the Brown family."
Brown? Toby Brown?
The last name Brown made me first think of the figure I just saw... Is it Toby? Why would he put his hotel up for sale?
"You mean my father, Toby Brown? Just now the person in charge of this mall told me this mall was originally a hotel, but because it was not good at business it was sold to him."
I was even more uneasy inside. Although reason told me it was probably just a coincidence.
"Yes. It was your father Toby. As for the sale of the hotel, I didn't know about it. But my friend told me that if that address is going to be converted into a mall, it will make more money than a hotel."
"I know, Su. But Toby has a very bad reputation with me. He'll do anything to get money. I'm worried it's a conspiracy."
"Emily, watch out!"
Just as I was talking to Susan, I suddenly heard Andre shouting and the screams of people around me.
I looked up. A steel pipe was falling from the sky and was about to hit me! It was too late for me to dodge.
Just then, a man pushed me aside with all his strength. I heard a muffled sound and the steel pipe smashed into the man!
"Andy!"
Andre pushed me away while he was unconscious. There was blood coming out of his back, and I called the ambulance with a shaking hand.
"Andy! Andre! Wake up!"
