Chapter 36
Emily's POV
I don't know how I got Andre into the hospital, but when I looked back he was already being wheeled into the operating room, and Nathan stood with me outside the door. I had a trembling hand and didn't know what I was supposed to do next.
"Emily, I'm sorry, it's my fault. If I had been aware of these safety hazards, Mr. Vincent would not have been injured. Don't worry, I'm sure Mr. Vincent will be fine. I'll stay here with you until he comes out."
Nathan's hand rested on my shoulder. If he hadn't been holding me up, I might have collapsed on the hospital floor without support.
"Nathan, it's not your fault. Neither of us would have known that the pipe would fall. It's my fault. If I had been aware of my surroundings when I answered the phone, I should have found a safe place. I'm to blame for all of this, Andre was hurt so badly trying to save me."
I covered my face with my hands and couldn't stop the tears from flowing out of my eyes.
I remembered when the doctor did emergency treatment for Andre's wounds before he went into surgery. The injuries on his back looked so bad that his clothes and smashed skin stuck together and blood covered his entire back, and it took the doctor a long time to get rid of the clothes and the blood on his body.
Fortunately, the steel pipe only caused superficial wounds to him, his internal organs and bones were not caused by the damage. Doctors have now wheeled him into the operating room for treatment and stitching.
I can't even imagine how I would face Kate and his parents if Andre had been hurt that badly. And I now realize how important Andre is to me! I can't accept that one day I will lose him! I don't know how I'm going to face a future without Andre, all because of my mistakes!
"Emily, please don't blame yourself so much. What happened today was just an accident and had nothing to do with you. I'm sure Mr. Vincent doesn't want to see you blaming yourself so much either."
Although Nathan said so, I can't listen to any comfort now. The last time I was this helpless was when Hellen was sick.
The bell rang.
"I'm sorry, I have to take a call."
Nathan led me to a chair and sat down as he took the phone to the far end. That's when the doors to the operating room opened and I got to the doctor as fast as I could, "Doctor, how is he now?"
"No problem. His injury just looks serious. The wound is rather long, but it has already been stitched up. Just rest for a while and he'll be completely fine."
"Great, great! Thank God! Andre is fine!"
I was so happy that I didn't know what to say, and tears fell uncontrollably once again. I was so relieved and kept thanking God for not taking Andre away from me.
"Emily, I'm sorry. There are some things I need to take care of, and I don't think I can be with you anymore."
"Oh, that's okay."
I watched Nathan turn to leave, my heart very grateful for his company.
I followed the doctor as he brought Andre into the room. He hadn't awakened from the anesthetic yet, and we were going to move to a hospital with better medical facilities when his wounds healed a bit.
"Miss Jones. When the anesthetic wears off on Mr. Vincent, he will wake up. At that time, please meet me at my office immediately. We need to do further tests on Mr. Vincent."
I stood at Andre's bedside and listened to the doctor's instructions on what to look for.
"When Mr. Vincent wakes up, you can come to see me if he feels pain in the wound. We will prepare some pain medication for him according to his condition."
"Okay. I got it."
I sent the doctor away from the ward and wrote down everything he just said on a piece of paper. I was afraid that I would overlook something and Andre's wound would not heal quickly.
When I was done, I sat by the hospital bed and observed the unconscious Andre, whose handsome face was a bit pale, and I unconsciously remembered the scene when he rushed to my rescue. I didn't even get a good look at his face before he pushed me to the side. Andre didn't care if he would lose his life for coming to my rescue, and I blamed myself and felt guilty more than once.
I should have been more aware of my surroundings, I should have gone to a quiet and safe place to call. If I had been able to do these things, Andre would not have been hurt.
"Su, I'm sorry for hanging up on you so suddenly. Andre is fine now, don't worry."
I was taking care of Andre when Susan called. I must have scared her when I suddenly hung up the phone.
"Emily, what's going on? Why did I hear you screaming just now? Are you in danger?"
Susan sent out a series of questions that I didn't know how to answer her, and I couldn't hold back the tears just thinking about what had just happened.
"I was in that mall with Andre and it was being renovated. When I was talking to you on the phone, a steel pipe suddenly fell off and was about to hit me, and it was Andre who pushed me away. He was injured trying to save me and still hasn't woken up."
"Oh, my God! That's terrible! Emily, don't worry. Kevin and I are on our way."
I told Susan everything, and she immediately decided to come with Kevin to visit Andre in the hospital. After hanging up the phone, I couldn't control my emotions anymore. But I was afraid of disturbing Andre's rest, so I could only lie on my bed and cry out in a small voice.
"Baby. Don't cry for me, it makes me sad to see you sad."
I looked up and couldn't believe the image in front of me.
Andre had woken up!
His voice was very weak, but he was still the first to comfort me to tell me not to be sad.
"Andre! You're awake! I'm going to call the doctor right now!"
I didn't have time to be sad and quickly got up and left the room to call the doctor to examine Andre. After that, I went back to the doctor's office to prepare painkillers for Andre. By the time I finished everything and returned to the room, Andre's examination was all done. I moved carefully to Andre's bedside and apologized to him.
"I'm sorry, Andy. it's all my fault. If I had been more careful, you wouldn't have been hurt."
"Don't blame yourself anymore, baby. You're not to blame for this. I had to go and save you. You're my mate, and I couldn't watch you get hurt and I didn't do anything."
After Andre's words, I flung myself at him and hugged his neck, breaking down and crying.
I was so lucky to have met Andre when I was going to have nothing! He gave me all the love he could! I can't help it if I don't love him! He was so good to me. No one but Hellen would ever take care of me, care for me, and love me with everything he had as he did.
"Okay, okay. Don't cry, baby. Did you call Kate? I don't think we'll be able to go back tonight."
I then remembered that Kate was still waiting at home for us to go back for dinner together.
I hurriedly let go of my hold on Andre to call Kate. But I didn't tell Kate that Andre was hurt. I just told her that Andre and I had work to do today and we couldn't have dinner with her.
Kate sounded very unhappy but was good enough to promise I would have a good dinner.
"Emily! Watch the news! The news of Mr. Vincent's injury has been posted on the internet!"
Nathan suddenly called me, he was very anxious to tell me that the news of Andre's injury had been taken on video and put on the internet.
I rushed to open my phone. I found that the news about Andre's injury was spreading fast and everyone was talking about it. Some people were even calling me a witch who would always bring Andre bad luck.
After that, Andre's parents, Wilson and Jane also learned about Andre's injury and rushed to the hospital because of the news on the internet.
Jane rushed to my side with an angry face and slapped me without saying a word!
