Chapter 40
Emily's POV
"Okay, I promise you. I won't see Nathan again after that."
I didn't want to promise Andre, he simply didn't trust my feelings for him by doing that. Nathan and I would just be friends, and nothing new would come of it. But as soon as I thought that Andre was injured to save my life, I couldn't say no. For him to be able to get well without worrying about me, I had to promise him.
"Emily, I want you to think about it seriously. I want you to be able to work for me."
Nathan was still waiting for me in front of the office at the end of my workday. I didn't agree to go out with him again, but I didn't know how to express to him the offer not to see him again. I had to choose to hide it from Andre.
Nathan once again offered me to go work for him, and I was seriously considering his words.
Fiona was very good at what she did, but she and I simply could not coexist. The longer I stay at the VA, the more I am targeted by Fiona, who always comes up with new ways to torment me. And now I worry every day that someone will remember that I was on the news with Andre as a girlfriend. If everyone knew about it, then I would probably be targeted by more than just Fiona. All the women in the company who like Andre would see me as the enemy, and that's not what I want.
No one in Nathan's company knows me, and no one would target me for emotional problems. This is very good for my future career development.
"Emily, I wish I could meet with you, I have something very important to tell you. Dylan."
I didn't know why all those people I didn't want to meet suddenly all knew my contact information and company address, Toby came to my office door and asked me for money, and now Dylan was sending me unsolicited messages asking me to meet me.
I didn't reply to him. Dylan and I had become strangers, or at least that's what I thought deep down. I couldn't forgive him for his betrayal, nor could I accept his lack of commitment and cowardice. I don't think there is any need for us to see each other again. If I could, I would like Dylan to disappear from my life forever and never appear again.
Dylan texted me for several days in a row, but I didn't reply. Then he probably gave up and never messaged again.
"Emily, come to the penthouse office. I need to ask you something."
Andre's wounds finally recovered completely and he returned to the office. I was thinking about what to tell him about my resignation when Andre suddenly sent me a text message asking me to come to his office. To hide our relationship, he never took the initiative to meet with me, but this time he took the initiative to send a message asking me to come to the office. I was a little confused but took the elevator to the top floor when no one was looking.
"Why is the whole company staff saying that you and Nathan are a couple? Baby, you tell me. Are you still in touch with him? Why does everyone know about you and him, but none of me, the real boyfriend, does?"
I didn't realize that people at work were still curious about Nathan and me. Even Andre knew about it. If he hadn't brought that up, I would have almost forgotten about that rumor about Nathan and me.
"I'm sorry, Andy, I admit I'm still in touch with Nathan. I lied to you, I'm sorry. But Nathan and I are just good friends, and those were just rumors. You don't have to care at all." I didn't want to lie to Andre, and I chose to tell him the truth.
I couldn't cut Nathan off, it was very rude. He had helped me so many times, I couldn't say something like that.
"Why, Emily, why? You promised me you wouldn't contact him again, so why did you lie to me and not keep your promise? You knew Nathan liked you, but you still chose to be friends with him. Did you ever care about my feelings?"
Andre never interfered with my social life before, and this time his anger and rage were beyond my comprehension.
He had so many beautiful girls around him, Lucy or Vivian or even Fiona, but I never doubted him or asked him to cut them off! All I had was a male friend with whom I had a good relationship, and he was going to overbearingly prevent me from talking, chatting, and seeing Nathan. This is unacceptable! His distrust of me was so heartbreaking.
"Why don't you trust me? I know Nathan likes me, but I have rejected him and he has assured me that he won't ruin my relationship with you. He and I are just friends, and you have no right to dictate what kind of friends I make!"
I don't think I can communicate with Andre at all right now. I couldn't understand what he was doing and Andre was angry about my relationship with Nathan.
We had a big fight and I ran out of the office in tears. Walking down the road. I didn't understand why I had gotten to this point with Andre. The problem between us seems to be very serious because Andre seems to have very little trust in me. I have repeatedly stressed to him that I will not betray him, but he still feels angry whenever I come into contact with Nathan.
"Emily! I finally found you! I have something to tell you!"
Dylan suddenly appeared and blocked my path. I wasn't in the mood to talk to him and pushed him away to continue walking.
"Emily! I have something very important to tell you! Will you sit down and listen to me?"
I was pushed by Dylan to sit down on a chair on the street. My mind was filled with images of the fight Andre and I had just had, and I didn't answer his words.
"Emily, please believe me! That mall project you're working on right now is a scam! It was your father Toby who planned it in conjunction with Mr. Vincent's rivals to get a lot of money."
"Dylan. Are you telling the truth? Don't be ridiculous! Where did you find out about this? How did you know that our company... How did you know I was in charge of this project?"
I couldn't continue to grieve about my fight with Andre, and I was shocked by the information Dylan told me. I didn't think it was a lie, because Dylan didn't even know that I was in charge of the project.
"I'm not kidding, Emily. I'm telling the truth. These are the things Emma told me. I don't know who gave you this project, but please believe me. If this project succeeds, Mr. Vincent's company will have tens or even hundreds of millions of dollars to lose! When the time comes, you who are in charge of this matter will also be punished for it!"
"No! This is not possible! This project was given to me by Fiona, the head of the project department, and there is no way she would do anything to hurt the company! And... And the person in charge of this project is Nathan..."
I couldn't believe it was true! How could Fiona do something to hurt the company when she loved Andre? And Nathan is so gentle... How could he be a match for Andre?
"Emily, you don't understand! Nathan Claude is the youngest son of Mr. Vincent's business rival, and he has been living abroad, so Mr. Vincent doesn't even know about his existence!"
